2 THOMAS SUNDAY April 12, 2015 TROPAR: Life shone forth from your grave, O Christ God, even though it was sealed. O Resurrection of all, you came through locked doors and appeared to your disciples through whom you constantly renew in us an upright spirit in your great mercy. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Now and forever and ever. Amen. KONDAK: Although the doors were locked, O Christ God, you entered the room. And when Thomas touched your lifegiving side with his inquiring right hand, he proclaimed to you with the other apostles: You are my Lord and my God. PROKIMEN: Great is our Lord, and great His strength; there is no limit to His understanding. Verse: Praise the Lord, for psalmody is a good thing. Let praise be sweetly sung to our God. A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (5:12-20) Brethren, in those days, through the hands of the apostles, many signs and wonders occurred among the people. By mutual agreement they used to meet in Solomon s Portico. No one else dared to join them, despite the fact that the people held them in great esteem. Nevertheless more and more believers, men and women in great numbers, were continually added to the Lord. The people carried the sick into the streets and laid them on cots and mattresses, so that when Peter passed by, at least his shadow might fall on one or another of them. Crowds from the towns around Jerusalem would gather, too, bringing their sick and those who were troubled by unclean spirits, all of whom were cured. The high priest and all his supporters (that is, the party of the Sadducees), filled with jealousy, arrested the apostles and threw them into the public jail. During the night, however, an angel of the Lord opened the gates of the jail, led them forth, and said, Go out now and take your place in the temple precincts and preach to the people all about this new life.

3 ALLELUIA: Come, let us rejoice in the Lord; let us shout with joy to God, our Savior. Alleluia (3). For the Lord is a great God and a great ruler over all the earth. Alleluia (3). GOSPEL John 20:19-31 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you." And with that he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven." Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. So the other disciples told him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe it." A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, "Peace be with you!" Then he said to Thomas, "Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe." Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!" Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed." Jesus did many other miraculous signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name. IN PLACE OF IT IS TRULY PROPER : The angel exclaimed to her, full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin. And again I say: Rejoice! Your Son is risen from the grave on the third day. With himself he has raised all the dead. All you peoples, rejoice! IRMOS: Shine, O Shine! New Jerusalem! For the glory of the Lord has shone on you! Sing now and exult with joy, O Sion. And you, O pure Mother of God, adorn yourself in the splendor of your Son s resurrection. COMMUNION VERSE: Glorify the Lord, O Jerusalem; praise your God, O Sion. Alleluia (3). IN PLACE OF: Blessed is He, We have seen the true light, May our mouths be filled, Blessed be the name, Glory be to the Father : Christ is risen from the dead. By death he conquered death, and to those in the graves he granted life.

4 THE SUNDAY OF ST. THOMAS GOSPEL MEDITATION By Msgr. Eugene Chromoga This Sunday is named after the Gospel account which tells us of Jesus appearance to His Apostles following His glorious resurrection. Thomas doubted Jesus had truly risen from the dead and emphatically declared: Unless I see the holes that the nails made in His hands, and can put my finger into the holes, and unless I can put my hand into His side, I refuse to believe. In today s Gospel, Jesus addresses Thomas saying: Put your finger here! Look! Here are My hands! Give me your hand and put it into My side! Doubt no longer but believe! Accepting the invitation, Thomas places his hand into our Lord s side and exclaims: My Lord and my God! Jesus response to this converted doubter was: You believe because you can see Me. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe. In addition to the above scene following the resurrection, the Gospels mention only two other incidents involving Thomas. The first was when the Apostles learned that Jesus was returning to Jerusalem to wake Lazarus. They tried to dissuade Him, fearing for His life. It was only Thomas who said, Let us also go, that we may die with Him. The other incident was the Last Supper. Jesus had said, You know the way to the place where I am going. Thomas replied. Lord, we do not know where You are going, so how can we know the way? Jesus replied, I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life. No one can come to the Father except through Me. (Jn.14:5-6) Tradition says St. Thomas preached the Gospel in Persia and India. He died a martyr s death. His feast day is celebrated in the Byzantine Church on October 6 th and the Sunday after Easter; in the Roman Church on December 21st. For, if you practice kindness in all you say and do, The Lord will wrap His kindness around your heart and you.. And wrapped within His kindness you are sheltered and secure And under His direction your way is safe and sure.

ADORATION USE LIBRARY: Please remember to pick up any books that you may have lent to the adoration library. THERE SHOULD BE NO KNEELING DURING THE PASCHAL SEASON UNTIL PENTECOST SUNDAY. This regulation is mentioned by the Council of Nicaea, which met in the year 325, and which also set the date for Pascha. Our Father, Saint Basil the Great, explains that this symbolizes our personal resurrection as well as our calling to higher, heavenly things. NYC BUS TRIP: North Anthracite Council of the League of Ukrainian Catholics is sponsoring a bus trip to the annual St. George Ukrainian Street Festival, Lower East Side of Manhattan on Saturday, May 16, 2015 with a side trip to Central Park and the famous Fifth Avenue area. Participants are also welcome to do their own thing for all or part of the day if they so wish. The 55 passenger bus will depart from Scranton s St. Vladimir Church, 428 North Seventh Avenue at 8:00am and from Edwardsville s St. Vladimir Church, 70 Zerby Avenue at 8:45am. Departure from New York City will be at 9:00pm. Cost is $40.00 per person. Full nonrefundable advance payment reserves a seat.
