2 SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY FIRST SUNDAY OF GREAT LENT March 9, 2014 TROPAR: Even though your tomb was sealed with a stone by your people, and soldiers guarded your most pure body, you arose on the third day, O Savior, giving life to the world. And so the heavenly powers cried out to you, O Giver of life: Glory to your resurrection, O Christ. Glory to your lasting reign. Glory to your salvation plan, one and only true lover of all people. TROPAR: We bow in worship before your most pure image, O gracious Lord, and beg pardon for our sins, O Christ our God. Of your own free will you ascended the cross in the flesh to deliver your handiwork from enslavement to the enemy. For this, in thanksgiving we cry out to you: By coming to save the world, you filled all things with joy, O Saviour of ours! Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. Now and for ever and ever. Amen. KONDAK: The unconfinable Word of the Father came forth from you confined in the flesh, O Mother of God. By transfiguring our image tainted of old, he restored us to his divine goodness. And so acknowledging our salvation, we show forth that image within ourselves by word and deed. PROKIMEN: Blest are you, O Lord God of our fathers. Forever praised and glorified is your name. Verse: For you are just in all you have done....just as words edify the ear, so also the image stimulates the eye. What the book is to the literate, the image is to the illiterate. Just as words speak to the ear, so the image speaks to the sight; it brings us understanding. For this reason God ordered the ark to be constructed of wood which would not decay, and to be gilded outside and in, and for the tablets to be placed inside, with Aaron's staff and the golden urn containing the manna, in order to provide a remembrance of the past, and an image of the future. Who can say that these were not images, heralds sounding from far off?...obviously they were not adored for their own sake, but through them the people were led to remember the wonders of old and to worship God, the worker of wonders. They were images serving as memorials; they were not divine, but led to the remembrance of divine power. St. John of Damascus: On the Holy Images

3 A reading from St. Paul's Epistle to the Hebrews (11:24-26,32-40;12:1-2) Brethren, by faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter; he wished to be ill treated along with God's people rather than enjoy the fleeting rewards of sin. Moses considered the reproach borne by God's Anointed greater riches than the treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to the reward. What more shall I recount? I have no time to tell of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, of David and Samuel and the prophets, who by faith conquered kingdoms, did what was just, obtained the promises; they broke the jaws of lions, put out raging fires, escaped the devouring sword; though weak they were made powerful, became strong in battle, and turned back foreign invaders. Women received back their dead through resurrection. Others were tortured and would not receive deliverance, in order to obtain a better resurrection. Still others endured mockery, scourging, even chains and imprisonment. They were stoned, sawed in two, put to death at sword's point; they went about garbed in the skins of sheep or goats, needy, afflicted, tormented. The world was not worthy of them. They wandered about in deserts and on mountains, they dwelt in caves and in holes of the earth. Yet despite the fact that all of these were approved because of their faith; they did not obtain what had been promised. God had made a better plan, which included us. Without us, they were not to be made perfect. Therefore, since we for our part, are surrounded by this cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every encumbrance of sin, which clings to us and persevere in running the race which lies ahead. ALLELUIA: Moses and Aaron are among his priests, and Samuel among those who call upon his name. Alleluia (3). They called upon the Lord and he heard them. Alleluia (3). Gospel John 1:43-51 INSTEAD OF: IT IS TRULY RIGHT: All creation rejoices in you, O full of grace: the assembly of angels and the human race. O santified temple and spiritual paradise, boast of virgins! God became incarnate from you. Being our God before all ages, he became a child. By making your womb his throne, you became more spacious than the skies. All creation rejoices in you, O full of grace. Glory to you. COMMUNION VERSE: Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the highest. Alleluia (3). Rejoice in the Lord, righteous ones; praise from the upright is fitting. Alleluia(3).

His talk will be at 6:00 PM on Friday March 14 th at SS Peter & Paul. Mitred Arch-Priest Monsignor Stephen Hrynuck -Please remember in your prayers for soul of +Reverend Mitred Archpriest Monsignor Stephen Hrynuck, 102, who fell asleep in the Lord, Friday, March 7, Prior to his retirement, he had served as pastor of Ss. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Olyphant, Pa. for 57 years. On December 31, 2008, Msgr. Hrynuck was the oldest active serving Catholic pastor in the United States. Priestly Parastas will be sung on Monday evening, March 10, 2014 at 7 p.m and funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, March 11, 2014 at 11 a.m. in Ss. Cyril and Methodius Ukrainian Catholic Church, 135 River Avenue, Olyphant, Pa. We pray he may be granted rest in the bosom of Abraham, numbered among the saints and that his memory may be eternal. LENTEN SERVICES: The Sorokousty Service will be served on all Wednesdays during Lent immediately following Stations of the Cross at 6:30pm. The Liturgy of the Pre-sanctified Gifts will be held at 9:30AM on Fridays during Great Lent, STARTING March 21, due to the Shroud of Turin in Plymouth. PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: The next meeting of the Parish Council is Tuesday, April 8 at 6:00PM. CONFESSION: Please plan your Easter Confession.
