2 SUNDAY OF THE MAN BORN BLIND May 1, 2016 TROPAR : Christ is risen from the dead, conquering death by death, and to those in the tombs, bestowing life. TROPAR: Believers, let us worship and praise in song the Word of God. He is co-eternal with the Father and the Holy Spirit. Yet he was born of a virgin for our salvation. In the flesh he willingly ascended the cross and suffered death, that he might raise the dead by his glorious resurrection. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. KONDAK: We come to you, O Christ, in the blindness of our souls; and. Like the man born blind, we repent and cry out to you: You are that great radiant light that dispels the darkness of our souls. Now and forever and ever. KONDAK: Although you went down into the grave, O Immortal One, you destroyed the power of hell. You arose as a mighty victor, O Christ our God. You greeted the myrrhbearing women, saying: Rejoice! You brought peace to your apostles. You give resurrection to the fallen. PROKIMEN: Pray and give praise to the Lord our God. Verse: God is known in Judea; his name is great in Israel. A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (16:16-34) In those days, while we (apostles) were on our way out to the place of prayer we met a slave girl who had a clairvoyant spirit. She used to bring substantial profit to her masters by fortune telling. The girl began to follow Paul and the rest of us shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God; they will make known to you a way of salvation." She did this for several days until finally Paul became annoyed, turned around, and said to the spirit. "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you, come out of her!" Then and there the spirit left her. When her masters saw that their source of profit was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and dragged them into the main square before the local authorities. They turned them over to the magistrates with this complaint: "These men are agitators disturbing the peace of our city! Furthermore, they are Jews, which means they advocate customs which are not lawful for us Romans to adopt or practice." The crowd joined in the attack on them and the magistrate stripped them and ordered them to be flogged. After receiving many lashes they were thrown into prison, and the

3 jailer was given instructions to guard them well. Upon receipt of these instructions he put them in maximum security, going so far as to chain their feet to a stake. About midnight, while Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God as their fellow prisoners listened, a severe earthquake suddenly shook the place, rocking the prison to its foundation. Immediately all the doors flew open and everyone's chains were pulled loose. The jailer woke up to see the prison gates wide open. Thinking that the prisoners had escaped, he drew his sword to kill himself; but Paul shouted to him, "Do not harm yourself! We are all still here." The jailer called for a light, then rushed in and fell trembling at the feet of Paul and Silas. After a brief interval he led them out and said, "Men, What must I do to be saved?" Their answer was, "Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved, and all your household." They proceeded to announce the word of God to him and to everyone in his house. At that late hour of the night he took them in and bathed their wounds; then he and his whole household were baptized. He led them up into his house, spread a table before them, and joyfully celebrated with his whole family his newfound faith in God. ALLELUIA: Look upon me and have mercy on me. Alleluia (3). Guide my steps in accord with your word. Alleluia (3). Gospel John 9:1-38 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, "Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?" "Neither this man nor his parents sinned," said Jesus, "but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life. As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. While I am in the world, I am the light of the world." Having said this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man's eyes. "Go," he told him, "wash in the Pool of Siloam" (this word means Sent). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, "Isn't this the same man who used to sit and beg?" Some claimed that he was. Others said, "No, he only looks like him." But he himself insisted, "I am the man." "How then were your eyes opened?" they demanded. He replied, "The man they call Jesus made some mud and put it on my eyes. He told me to go to Siloam and wash. So I went and washed, and then I could see." "Where is this man?" they asked him. "I don't know," he said. They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind. Now the day on which Jesus had made the mud and opened the man's eyes was a Sabbath. Therefore the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. "He put mud on

4 my eyes," the man replied, "and I washed, and now I see." Some of the Pharisees said, "This man is not from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath." But others asked, "How can a sinner do such miraculous signs?" So they were divided. Finally they turned again to the blind man, "What have you to say about him? It was your eyes he opened." The man replied, "He is a prophet." The Jews still did not believe that he had been blind and had received his sight until they sent for the man's parents. "Is this your son?" they asked. "Is this the one you say was born blind? How is it that now he can see?" "We know he is our son," the parents answered, "and we know he was born blind. But how he can see now, or who opened his eyes, we don't know. Ask him. He is of age; he will speak for himself." His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was the Christ would be put out of the synagogue. That was why his parents said, "He is of age; ask him." A second time they summoned the man who had been blind. "Give glory to God," they said. "We know this man is a sinner." He replied, "Whether he is a sinner or not, I don't know. One thing I do know. I was blind but now I see!" Then they asked him, "What did he do to you? How did he open your eyes?" He answered, "I have told you already and you did not listen. Why do you want to hear it again? Do you want to become his disciples, too?" Then they hurled insults at him and said, "You are this fellow's disciple! We are disciples of Moses! We know that God spoke to Moses, but as for this fellow, we don't even know where he comes from." The man answered, "Now that is remarkable! You don't know where he comes from, yet he opened my eyes. We know that God does not listen to sinners. He listens to the godly man who does his will. Nobody has ever heard of opening the eyes of a man born blind. If this man were not from God, he could do nothing." To this they replied, "You were steeped in sin at birth; how dare you lecture us!" And they threw him out. Jesus heard that they had thrown him out, and when he found him, he said, "Do you believe in the Son of Man?" "Who is he, sir?" the man asked. "Tell me so that I may believe in him." Jesus said, "You have now seen him; in fact, he is the one speaking with you." Then the man said, "Lord, I believe," and he worshiped him IN PLACE OF: Blessed is He, We have seen the true light, May our mouths be filled, Blessed be the name, Glory be to the Father : Christ is risen from the dead. By death he conquered death, and to those in the graves he granted life.

CLEANING THE CHURCH: We are looking for additional people to help clean the church, because unfortunately Ms. Kutsup can no longer volunteer. If you can help Mrs. Potsko in cleaning the church, please contact the rectory. FLEA MARKET: The flea market will be on the following schedule Saturday, May 7 with Potato Pancakes at noon-flea Market from 9am to 4pm. AND Friday, May 13 noon to 6pm (1/2Price Sale) and Saturday May 14(bag Day) 9AM to 2pm. We are in need of new or gently used items. If you need items picked up or if you want to drop them off at the church hall please call We are accepting jewelry, books, kitchenware, linens, cd's, video's, electronics (no tv's) furniture, holiday items, clothing, toys, tools, games, puzzles, etc. and volunteers. MOTHER S DAY: May 8 th is Mother s Day. On Saturday, May 7 th we will have Divine Liturgy for All Living and Deceased Mothers of our Parish. Remember your mom in Divine Liturgy. MEMORIAL DAY: On Sunday, May 29 we will have Panahyda Services and Blessing of Graves on our Transfiguration Cemetery at 2:00PM. Panahyda Services and Blessing of Graves at Saint Nicholas Cemetery will also be held on Sunday, May 29 at 3:30PM. Remember your family members in these services. Just a reminder, Monday, May 30 is Memorial Day- no liturgies will be served on that day. FIRST HOLY COMMUNION: On Sunday, May 29 we will celebrate the sacraments of First Penance and First Holy Communion of Steven Miller. If you have any children who need to receive First Holy Communion or First Penance, please contact the rectory.

6 CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS COLLECTIONS: The collection for Catholic Home Missions will be taken on the weekend of April 30 and May 1, 2016 at Divine Liturgy. Archbishop Stefan Soroka asks all the faithful to be generous in this offering for the annual appeal. PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: The next meeting of the Parish Council will be on Tuesday, May 10 at 6:00PM. 7 PRAYER TO OUR LADY OF LOURDES O ever immaculate Virgin, Mother of mercy, health of the sick, refuge of sinners, comfort of the afflicted, you know my wants, my troubles, my sufferings; deign to cast upon me a look of mercy. By appearing in the Grotto of Lourdes, you were pleased to make it a privileged sanctuary, whence you dispense your favors, and already many sufferers have obtained the cure of their infirmities, both spiritual and corporal. I come, therefore, with the most unbounded confidence, to implore your maternal intercession. Obtain, O loving Mother, the grant of my requests. 8 God s Mercy given through Care for the Elderly Compassionate and quality care of our elderly parents and family members is offered by the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate at St. Joseph s Home in Sloatsburg, N.Y. The need for such facilities among our elderly parents and family members, and within our Ukrainian American community is great. The addition of a new wing and the upgrading of the existing facilities will enable the Sisters Servants to offer elevated medical care and service for the elderly. There will be increased capacity to admit more people needing care. The Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate have historically offered such quality and compassionate care throughout our history in America (75 years in 2017). We need to help them to continue to fulfill this mission and to enable a much needed expansion of St. Joseph s Home in Sloatsburg.
