2 SUNDAY OF SAMARIAN WOMAN MAY 3, 2015 TROPAR: When the Lord s faithful women disciples heard the enlightening proclamation of the Resurrection from an angel, they threw off their forefather s condemnation, and with joyful boast broke the news to the apostles: Death is no more. Christ God is risen, blessing the world with great mercy. TROPAR: Now that the paschal season is half completed, satisfy my soul s thirst with the waters of piety and true devotion, for you, O Savior, invitingly called out to all: Whoever thirsts, come to me and drink. O Christ God, fountain of our life, glory to you. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. KONDAK: When by faith that Samaritan woman of everlasting memory came to the well, she found you, the water of wisdom. You completely satisfied her soul s thirst and so she inherited the kingdom on high. Now and for ever and ever. Amen. KONDAK: O Master and maker of all, when the feast of the old laws was half over, you said to those present: Come and draw the water of immortality. So now, as we fall before you in worship, we cry out in faith: Grant us your mercies, as you are the fountain of our life. PROKIMEN: Sing praises to our God, O sing. Sing praises to our King, O sing. Verse: Clasp your hands, all you nations; shout to God with an exuberant voice. Sing to our God, sing, sing to our King, sing. A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (11:19-30) In those days, the apostles scattered because of the troubles caused by what happened to Stephen, and went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch, making the message known to none but Jews. Some of them were Cyprots and Cyreneans who had come to Antioch and began to talk even to the Greeks, announcing the good news of the Lord Jesus to them. The hand of the Lord was with them and a great number of them believed and were converted to the Lord. News of this eventually reached the ears of the church in Jerusalem, Barnabas being sent to Antioch. On his arrival he rejoiced to see the evidence of God s favor. He went off to Tarsus to look for Saul; once he had

3 found him, he brought him back to Antioch. For a whole year they met with the church and instructed great numbers. It was in Antioch that the disciples were called Christians for the first time. This made the disciples determine to set something aside, each according to his means, and send it to the relief of the brothers who lived in Judea. They did this, dispatching it to the presbyters in the care of Barnabas and Saul. ALLELUIA: Set your sights, succeed and reign in the cause of truth, meekness and righteousness. Alleluia (3). You have loved righteousness and hated iniquity. Alleluia (3). Gospel John 4:5-42 On His way to Galilee, Jesus stopped to rest at Jacob s well, near Sichem, a town twenty miles north of Jerusalem. Samaritans were a mixed race introduced into Palestine by the Assyrians after Sargon II destroyed the city of Samaria in 722 B.C. The woman was surprised, when Jesus, a Jew, asked her for water, for the Jews avoided the Samaritans as heretics. Converted by Christ, the sinful woman left the world, retired to the desert and led an austere and penitential life the she became a Saint, known as St. Photina. IN PLACE OF IT IS TRULY PROPER : The angel exclaimed to the Lady full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin. And again I say: Rejoice! Your Son is risen from the grave on the third day. With himself he has raised all the dead. All you peoples, rejoice! IRMOS: Shine, O Shine! New Jerusalem! For the glory of the Lord has shone on you! Sing now and exult with joy, O Sion. And you, O pure Mother of God, adorn yourself in the splendor of your Son s resurrection. COMMUNION VERSE: Receive the Body of Christ; drink in the fountain of immortality. Praise the Lord in the heavens, praise him in the highest. Alleluia(3).

THERE SHOULD BE NO KNEELING DURING THE PASCHAL SEASON UNTIL PENTECOST SUNDAY. This regulation is mentioned by the Council of Nicaea, which met in the year 325, and which also set the date for Pascha. Our Father, Saint Basil the Great, explains that this symbolizes our personal resurrection as well as our calling to higher, heavenly things. RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION CLASS: Religious classes will resume on Sunday, May 3 immediately following Divine Liturgy. MOTHER S DAY LITURGY: On NEXT Saturday, May 9 at 6:00PM Divine Liturgy will be served for all living and deceased mothers. Please remember your Mother on Mother s Day. PENTECOST SUNDAY: We will have Blessing of the Graves on the Transfiguration of Our Lord Cemetery on Sunday, May 24 at 2:30PM and at Saint Nicholas Cemetery at 4:00PM. MAY IS THE MONTH OF MARY: The month of May there will be Moleben Services to the Mother of God. On all Saturdays and Sundays in the month of May immediately following Divine Liturgy we will be praying the Petitions to the Mother of God. MORNING PRAYER Grant unto me, my Lord, that with peace in mind I may face all that this new day is to bring. Grant unto me grace to surrender myself completely to Thy holy will. Instruct and prepare me in all things for every hour of this day. Whatsoever tidings I may receive during the day, do Thou teach me to accept them calmly, in the firm conviction that all eventualities fulfill Thy holy will. Govern Thou my thoughts and feelings in all I do and say. When things unforeseen occur, let me not forget that all cometh down from Thee. Teach me to behave sincerely and reasonable toward every member of my family and all other human beings, that I may not cause confusion and sorrow to anyone. Bestow upon me, my Lord, strength to endure the fatigue of the day and to bear my share in all its passing events. Guide Thou my will and teach me to pray, to believe, to hope, to suffer, to forgive, and to love. Amen.

6 THE SAMARITAN WOMAN: Wearied by his journey, Jesus sat down beside a well. It was about the sixth hour. Already divine mysteries begin. Not for nothing is Jesus wearied; not for nothing does the Power of God suffer fatigue. Not for nothing does he who refreshes the weary endure weariness. Not for nothing is he wearied, whose absence makes us weary, whose presence gives us strength. Jesus is tired, tired out by his journey. He sits down. On the edge of a well he seats himself. It is midday, and he sits there exhausted. All these details have meaning. They are meant to signify something. They capture our attention, persuading us to knock and investigate further. We have Christ's own exhortation to do so, for he said: Knock and it will be opened to you. May he, then, open up the meaning of this text to us as well as to you. It was for your sake that Jesus was wearied by his journey. In Jesus we encounter divine power together with weakness. He is strong and weak at one and the same time: strong, because in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God, present with God from the beginning. Would you know how strong the Son of God is? All things were made through him, and apart from him nothing came into being. The whole universe was made without effort. Could any greater power exist than the power of one who was able effortlessly to construct the entire universe? And would you know him in his weakness? The Word was made flesh, and lived among us. The power of Christ created you; the weakness of Christ recreated you. Christ's power caused what did not exist to come into being; Christ's weakness saved existing things from destruction. In his might he fashioned us; in his weakness he came in search of us. Jesus, then, is weak, tired out after his journey. Now that journey of his, undertaken for our sake, was his incarnation. How could he otherwise journey when he is present everywhere, and absent from nowhere? To what place or from what place could he travel? In only one way could he come to us, and that was by assuming our visible human flesh. Since then he condescended to come to us in that way, and to appear in the condition of a servant by taking to himself a human nature, that assumption of our nature was his journey. The fatigue caused by his journey, therefore, was the weariness Jesus experienced in our human nature. In his human body he was weak, but you must not be weak. You must be strong in his weakness, for there is more power in divine weakness than in human strength. St. Augustine (Homilies on the Gospel of John 15:6-7.
