2 SUNDAY OF THE OINTMENT BEARING WOMEN April 19, 2015 TROPAR: When you went down into death, O Life Immortal, you then dealt a death blow to hell with the brilliance of your divinity. When you raised the dead from the very bowels of the earth, all the powers of heaven cried out: O Giver of Life, Christ our God glory to you. TROPAR: The nobleman, Joseph, took your most pure body down from the tree. Wrapping it with a clean shroud and aromatic spices, he buried it in a new tomb. But in three days you rose, O Lord, bestowing on the world great mercy. Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit. KONDAK: By your rising, Christ God, you brought joy to the myrrh-bearing women; and you ended the lament of our first mother, Eve. You commanded your apostles to preach: the Savior is risen from the grave. Now and forever and ever. Amen. KONDAK: Although you went down into the grave, O Immortal One, you destroyed the power of hell. You arose as a mighty victor, O Christ our God. You greeted the myrrh-bearing women, saying: Rejoice! You brought peace to your apostles. You give resurrection to the fallen. PROKIMEN: Save Your people and bless, O Lord, Your inheritance. Verse: To you I will cry, O Lord my God, lest You turn from me in silence. A reading from the Acts of the Apostles ( 6:1-7) Brethren, in those days as the disciples increased in number, the Greek-speaking Jews complained against the Palestinian Jews that their widows were being neglected in the daily serving of food. The Twelve called together the community of disciples and said: "It is not right for us to neglect the word of God in order to be serving at table. Look around for seven proven men, brethren, who are full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom so that we could put them in charge of this service. As for ourselves, we shall continue in prayer and in the ministry of the word. The whole group accepted the proposal and chose Stephen, a man full of faith and the Holy Spirit, and Phillip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolaus of Antioch, a convert. These they presented to the apostles who after praying imposed hands upon them. And the work of God kept spreading and the number of disciples in Jerusalem kept increasing greatly with a large number of priests accepting the faith.

GOSPEL Mark 15:43-16:8 Joseph of Arimathea, a prominent member of the Council, who was himself waiting for the kingdom of God, went boldly to Pilate and asked for Jesus body. Pilate was surprised to hear that he was already dead. Summoning the centurion, he asked him if Jesus had already died. When he learned from the centurion that it was so, he gave the body to Joseph. So Joseph bought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph saw where he was laid. When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus body. Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb and they asked each other, Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb? But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed. Don t be alarmed, he said. You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. But go, tell his disciples and Peter, He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you. Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid. IN PLACE OF "IT IS TRULY PROPER": The angel exclaimed to the lady full of grace: Rejoice, O pure Virgin. And again I say: Rejoice! Your Son is risen from the grave on the third day. With himself he has raised all the dead. All you peoples, rejoice! Shine, O Shine! New Jerusalem! For the glory of the Lord has shone on you. Sing now and exult with joy, O Sion. And you, O pure Mother of God, adorn yourself in the splendor of your Son s resurrection. COMMUNION VERSE: Receive the Body of Christ; drink from the fountain of immortality. Praise the Lord from the heavens; praise him in the highest. Alleluia (3).

5 CHURCH NEWS Христос воскресе! SYMPATHY: Please remember in your prayers the soul of Dorothy Kobela who fell asleep in the Lord on Thursday, April 16. May Our Lord grant her rest in the bosom of Abraham, may she be numbered among the saints and may her memory be eternal. Mrs. Kobela will be remembered as an active member of our Parish and one of our dedicated bakers for every event. The funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Monday from Corcoran Funeral Home Inc., 20 S. Main St., Plains Township, with a Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. in Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord Ukrainian Catholic Church. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Parastas will be at 6:00PM on Sunday. Vichnaya pamyat. May Her Memory Be Eternal. THERE SHOULD BE NO KNEELING DURING THE PASCHAL SEASON UNTIL PENTECOST SUNDAY. This regulation is mentioned by the Council of Nicaea, which met in the year 325, and which also set the date for Pascha. Our Father, Saint Basil the Great, explains that this symbolizes our personal resurrection as well as our calling to higher, heavenly things. RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION CLASS: Religious classes will resume on Sunday, May 3 immediately following Divine Liturgy. MOTHER S DAY LITURGY: On Saturday, May 9 at 6:00PM Divine Liturgy will be served for all living and deceased mothers. Please remember your Mother on Mother s Day. 6 NYC BUS TRIP: North Anthracite Council of the League of Ukrainian Catholics is sponsoring a bus trip to the annual St. George Ukrainian Street Festival, Lower East Side of Manhattan on Saturday, May 16, 2015 with a side trip to Central Park and the famous Fifth Avenue area. Participants are also welcome to do their own thing for all or part of the day if they so wish. The 55 passenger bus will depart from Scranton s St. Vladimir Church, 428 North Seventh Avenue at 8:00am and from Edwardsville s St. Vladimir Church, 70 Zerby Avenue at 8:45am. Departure from New York City will be at 9:00pm. Cost is $40.00 per person. Full nonrefundable advance payment reserves a seat. FOOD COLLECTION: Transfiguration Of Our Lord Parish is collecting non-perishable food products to donate to the St. Faustina Food Kitchen. There is a collection box in the church entryway. Please try to donate something for people who are less fortunate.
