PATRICK S CATHEDRAL SUNDAY, JUNE 2, :00PM 3:00PM Couples in the Archdiocese of New York who are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary in the 2019 calendar year are invited to attend the Golden Jubilee Wedding Mass. Couples who wish to attend Mass must register with their parish and have a ticket. Pews will be reserved for the Golden Jubilee Couples only. Additional family and friends will be accommodated in pews outside of the reserved section (4 total). Deadline for Registration is May 7th TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Next weekend, many churches provide palms to be carried in the opening moments of the liturgy, as we gratefully recall Jesus entry into the holy city of Jerusalem. The children who greeted him on that day used what was both handy and traditional, since palms were carried to inaugurate the joyful harvest feast of Succoth. To this day, faithful Jews are directed to take a beautiful palm branch, green and straight as possible, called a lulav, and bind it with three myrtle branches fifteen inches long, and two longer willow branches. At the end of the temple service, everyone carries the lulav, circling the sanctuary in a dance called the Hoshanot, singing hymns of joy. In other climates, Jews and Christians alike have had to make accommodations over the years. In Italy, everyone carries olive branches today, often brought from their own garden. In England, forsythia branches are preferred, a relative of the olive, sign of peace. Germans prefer pussy willows, and others look for flowering spring branches. In our part of the world, what do you think would be the best choice to express joy and welcome, and to remind us of the joy of Christ s victory even as we prepare to commemorate his passion? Dear Brothers and Sisters, Each year now for the past 10 years, the Monday of Holy Week has been set aside as Reconciliation Monday by Cardinal Dolan. Every parish in the Archdiocese of New York (and the Brooklyn and Rockville Center dioceses) have their doors open for confession from 4pm until 8pm. I have always thought this was a great idea to motivate people to return to the sacraments. Very few things in life are more satisfying for a priest than when he hears, Father it s been years since my last confession, but I want to come back to the Church. I tell you this a full week ahead of time so that perhaps you can invite a friend back to Confession who you know hasn t gone in long time. Sometimes just a small invitation works. And if you haven t been to confession yourself for a while, I would like to personally invite you to come back and experience the incredible mercy of God through this very powerful sacrament.
