It is our sincere hope that, as part of their preparations, they think first of their Faith and the Sacrament of Marriage. A Wedding outside a Catholic Church and without the presence of a Priest is not a Sacrament. There is so much grace that the reception of the Sacrament of Marriage bestows upon a couple to help them to grow closer to God and to one another in their relationship. We have a Wedding Pamphlet that is informative. The couple can come by the Rectory and ask for a copy. We also have a Booklet that contains the newly-updated Rite of Marriage, Scripture Selections and Music. By reading over the words and prayers of the Sacrament of Marriage, the couple might be inspired to realize how important it is to marry in the Catholic Church and exchange their vows in Church and in the presence of God. We are here to journey with Engaged Couples and help them reach a decision to marry in accord with our Catholic Faith. Please share this reflection with family members that you may know in this situation. CHILDREN S EXPLANATION OF THE MASS White pamphlets, explaining the parts of the Mass, will be found in our Book Rack. The Rack is located at the foot of the stairs leading to the Choir Loft. Please feel free to take home a copy. CATHOLIC CUSTOMS: BOWING BEFORE THE ALTAR The profound bow of one s head is, in religious terms, an acknowledgement that something is worthy of reverence. When we pass the Altar, for example, we signify that the Altar is a sacred object. On the Altar, through the power of the Holy Spirit and the words of the Priest, repeating Jesus Words at the Last Supper, the bread and wine actually become the Body and Blood of Our Lord. The Altar, then, is worthy of reverence. Notice how the Priest, the Lector, the Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion and the Altar Servers bow when they pass the Altar. We suggest that you do the same when you pass the Altar. Such a gesture calls to mind our reverence for the Altar on which Christ rests during Mass. REFLECTIONS FROM POPE FRANCIS...Christians cannot enter into the transforming experience of God s Love unless they are open to new possibilities and not tied to their own plans and cherished way of doing things When Christians go about their daily lives without fear, they can discover God s constant surprises not to be suspicious of new things, but to embrace the challenges which the Spirit sets before them, even when this means changing plans and charting a different course. Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians Chap 4, Verses 6-9 Keep on doing what we have learned from God. Gospel of Matthew Chap 21, Verses Protect the Vineyard that God has given to us Dear Brothers and Sisters: October is traditionally observed as the month of Our Blessed Mother. This month and this year has a particular significance. October 13, 2017 is the One Hundredth Anniversary of the final apparition of Mary to the three shepherd children of Fatima, Portugal. The first appearance of the Mother of God took place in May of Lucia Santos and her two cousins, Francisco and Jactina Marto, described Mary as the Lady more brilliant than the Sun. From May until October of 1917, the Blessed Mother instructed the children on the power of the Rosary to end World War I, to re-convert Russia to Christianity and to save lost souls from eternal damnation. During the course of Her time with the young children, Our Lady granted them visions and shared with them three secrets. On October 13, 1917, the three children, their families, 300,000 believers and skeptical onlookers gathered at Cova da Iria and experienced what became known as the Miracle of the Sun. According to eyewitness accounts, the dark rainy clouds broke and the sun appeared as an opaque, spinning disc in the sky, with radiant colors. Lucia, Francisco and Jacinta reported visions of Jesus, Our Lady and St. Joseph blessing the people. Church authorities carefully studied and evaluated these events and in October 1930, officially declared the visions of Fatima as worthy of belief and permitted devotion to Our Lady s revelation of Herself as the Immaculate Heart. There is a wealth of spiritual riches from the Fatima Apparitions which Lucia, who became a Carmelite Nun, recorded in six detailed memoirs written between 1935 and Sr. Maria Lucia dos Santos, her Religious name, died in Her cousin Francisco died in 1919 and his sister, Jacinta, died in Both Francisco and Jacinta were canonized by Pope Francis this past May. The message of Fatima is to pray for peace and intercede for those who have drifted from the Faith. Both of these intentions are now needed more than ever. On August 13, 1917, Our Lady told the children:...pray a lot, a lot for the sinners and sacrifice a lot, as many souls persish because nobody is praying or making sacrifices for them Carry a Rosary with you, use it when waiting on line at a store, touch it during the day to remind yourself of Christ s many graces that Our Lady promises us. Prayerfully in Our Lady of Fatima,
