CATECHISM CORNER The Second Vatican Council declared that the future of humanity is in the hands of those men who are capable of providing the generations to come with reasons for life and optimism. (GS, no 31). No one can live without the hope that life has ultimate and lasting meaning beyond the concerns and struggles, the joys and satisfactions of each day. Catholics find that meaning and hope in Jesus Christ, whom God the Father has sent into the world for the salvation of all people. But the world can be a disturbing place. There is war and anxiety because of terrorism. There is the fierceness of competition and the injustices that come from greed. There are continuous distractions that come from the media, the numerous hours given to television, radio, and Internet. There are the unrelenting demands of work and family life. In the midst of such a culture, the Catholic Church offers a message that is not its own, but comes from God s self-revelation in Jesus Christ two thousand years ago, yet is ever new and renewing as it is received, celebrated, lived, and contemplated today. The Church offers to all people the possibility of encountering the living God today and finding in him lasting meaning and hope. The Church is a community of human beings who are still subject to sin, and so it is with humility that she offers herself as the meeting place with the living God. Her existence for two thousand years demonstrates the unceasing mercy and love of God in maintaining her in his grace as a faithful and repentant people. In a world of passing fads and transitory ambitions, she offers the substance of the wisdom of the Gospel and her growing understanding of it through two millennia. She offers the possibility of enriching the present moment with the gifts of a tradition rooted in God s self-revelation and with the hope and meaning for human life that come from God himself. In a world town by war and injustice, she celebrates the death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ, the gift of himself mad eternally present and effective, to make all peoples one with him as head of a reconciled and healed community. -excerpted from the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults Jessica M. Vincent Taglienti Deacon Joseph Weckbach OUR SCRIPTURE READING AT MASS THIS WEEKEND The Book of Exodus Chap 22 Verses We should be especially kind to the most vulnerable among us. Dear Brothers and Sisters: We conclude the Month of the Rosary on Tuesday, but our devotion to this beautiful meditative prayer should not end. The quest for world peace and the return of believers who may be caught up in the web of sin remain urgent priorities. How much anxiety are we living with as we face the increase of terrorism and the anger of those who perpetrate it! How much do we worry about our children and grandchildren who seem to have developed a casual attitude towards the practice of our Catholic Faith! Lucia, Jacinta and Francisco were immersed in a 1917 world that suffered under World War I and saw the rise of atheistic Communism. They trusted in the words of our Blessed Mother given to them on June 13, 1917: When you pray the Rosary, say after each Mystery: O Jesus, Forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell, lead all souls to Heaven, especially those who have most need of your Mercy. The Rosary is a simple prayer of meditation and intercession. It offers us serenity. It promises us Salvation and Peace. Its prayers are powerful and grace-filled. Why not make the recitation of the Rosary an integral part of our daily routine? Through the Rosary, we voice a sincere confiding of ourselves without reserve to Jesus, the Prince of Peace and His Loving Mother, Mary, the Queen of Peace. As the well-known Hymn Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me. In July 7, 1952, Pope Pius XII spoke of Our Lady of the Rosary: The gates of Hell will never prevail, where (Mary) offers Her Protection. She is the Good Mother, the Mother of all, and it has never been heard, that those who seek Her Protection, will never receive it. In the wake of the horrific tragedy in Las Vegas on October 1st, we cling to these consoling words of the Mother of Our Lord. We need to know that Our Lady will be with us as we feel so vulnerable because of violence. A blessed Peace: in our hearts, in our homes, in our schools, in our workplaces, in our neighborhood, in our Parish and in the world! Devotedly in Our Lady, The Letter of Saint Paul to the Thessalonians Chap 1, Verses 5-10 St. Paul reminds his listeners of how they have grown spiritually. Gospel of Matthew Chap 22, Verses Love is the greatest of all the commandments.
