Tickets are $25.00 (Adults Only) For tickets and more information please call: Rosemarie: (718) Charlotte: (347) UPCOMING SCRIPTURE SERIES: THE EVANGELIST LUKE: THE PROPHETIC GOSPEL Luke gives an orderly account (Lk 1:3) of Jesus earthly life from the announcement of his birth to his ascension to the Father. The structure of the gospel is parallel to Mark and Matthew s accounts. This is the reason all three are called the synoptic gospels. They all follow the same story line of Jesus life varied only by their own specific theological perspectives. Opening with the classical prologue (1-1:4); Luke begins his story with the infancy narrative (1:5-2:52) and the appearance of John the Baptist. Luke s account differs from Matthew s infancy (1:18-2:23) narrative just compare them. Luke prepares us for Jesus work 93:1-4:13) which sets up the Galilean ministry (4:14-9:50) where Luke highlights Jesus as bringing the promises of Scripture of the Old Covenant to fulfillment. The long journey to Jerusalem (9:51-19:27) becomes the turning point where Jesus stirs controversies with Jewish leadership setting up the drama of the passion (19:28-23:56). Finally the gospel climaxes with the resurrection and ascension narratives (24:1-53) where Jesus is victor over sin and death. A major theme in Luke s gospel is the universal message of salvation. Christ has come to fulfill all the prophecies of the Old Covenant to gather all people and nations into the family of God. Luke is the prophetic gospel because the author attempts to anchor his gospel in the tradition of the Old Testament portraying Jesus as Savior of God s Old Covenant people Israel. Luke s purpose is to demonstrate that Christ s redemptive work has been extended from Israel to the Gentiles and ultimately to all peoples inclusive of the oppressed, the poor and all who are socially marginalized. Women in particular are showcased throughout the gospel despite their otherwise low social standing. The portrayal of the Virgin Mary is unparalleled in the New Testament for its beauty and sensitivity. Other women too take a prominent place in the gospel e.g. Elizabeth (1:29-45); Anna (2:36-38); the widow of Nain (7:11-17); the unnamed sinful woman (7:36-50); Mary with Martha of Bethany (10:38-42). Mary Magdalene, Joanna and Mary mother of James are the first to come to the empty tomb (24:10). Luke is the only evangelist who narrates: Angel Gabriel s annunciation to Mary (1:26-38); Jesus boyhood experience in the Temple (2:41-51); parables of the good shepherd and prodigal son and details of Jesus ascension into glory (24:50-53). Vincent Taglienti Deacon Joseph Weckbach OUR SCRIPTURE READING AT MASS THIS WEEKEND The Book of Deuteronomy Chap 4, Verses 1-2, 6-8 For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as the Lord, our God, is to us? The Letter of Saint James Chap 1, Verses 17-18, 21b-22, 27 Religion that is pure is this: to care for orphans and widows in their affliction. The Gospel of Mark Chap 7, Verses 1-8, 14-15,21-23 This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me. Dear brothers and sisters, We ve all heard recently in the news about the latest scandals plaguing the Church. There have been so many commentaries by bishops and priests and lay people that it s hard to know what to say. Obviously this is a terrible tragedy and our first priority must be to pray for the victims of abuse. The horrible suffering they endured is beyond words. I think we should pray constantly for their healing and strength. I also think that we must pray for each other. A scandal like this can cause even a person who is strong in their faith to become cynical. I am very concerned that many people will give up their relationship with Jesus Christ and go the way so many people have gone in recent years-to become a none,- someone who has no religion. In order to do our part to keep this from happening, and to pray for the victims of abuse, on Saturday September 8th there will be Eucharistic Adoration from 12 Noon until 5pm at St. Clare s. This will be a time of reflection and reparation. Please think about spending some time in the presence of our Eucharistic Lord for these intentions and for any intentions you may have. Confession will be available from 3pm to 5pm that day. God bless you and keep the faith,
