2 WELCOME Welcome to First United Methodist Church, we are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us this morning. Founded in 1821, First Church is the oldest Protestant church in the area and the oldest Methodist church in Florida. This historic church, with four regular Sunday services, has a membership of 3200 and is overflowing with life. If you are visiting, we hope that you will consider becoming a member of our church family. You may join any Sunday by profession of faith or transfer of membership. Come and be a part of what God is doing here in FOCUS ON WORSHIP In 2017 we are having a concentrated focus on why we worship the way we do and what it means to worship at First Church. Throughout the year you ll notice a variety of special services, events, activities, and media designed to teach more about worship. You may notice some changes to our weekly bulletin. There are new sections intended to enhance our time here on Sunday mornings. A new "Notes" section provides a place to write any thoughts on the week's sermon and scripture. The "Daily Readings" section provides scriptures you can use in your personal devotion time each day. Read the bulletin through each week and grow closer to God this year through worship. NURSERY & CHILDREN S BULLETINS Nursery is available this morning for children up to five years old. If you need help locating the nursery, please see an usher or greeter for assistance. Also, children s worship bulletins and crayons are available in the narthex. VISITOR/NEW MEMBER CLASS We welcome all visitors and new members that are interested in learning more about First Church to an introductory class that consists of four parts. The class assembles at 9:30am in room PH101 next door in the Perry Home. Today s class, Tour of First Church, walks you through the historic buildings of our campus. On February 5, Introduction to First Church will give you an opportunity to ask questions and learn about the history, theology, worship, and membership of this great church. We hope you join us each week. PRAYER Prayer is a big part of our worship. If you are in need of prayer this morning, there are blue Prayer Request cards in each pew that will go to our Pastoral Care Team. If you want to pray for those in our congregation that are in need, there is also a public prayer list available on the bulletin board in the Church Office. If you are interested in receiving the church prayer list weekly, contact Ginger Raines at GRaines@fumcpensacola.com and ask to be added to the prayer chain. NEXT WEEK at FIRST CHURCH Join us next week here at First Church as we come together to worship God on the Fifth Sunday after the Epiphany. We will continue the series on the Sermon on the Mount. Dr. Wesley Wachob will preach at the 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00am worship services in the Main Sanctuary. The Rev. Brandon Bures will preach at the 11:00am ICON worship service. Written around the 8th century, the text has become popular since 1927 when it was wedded to the memorable Irish tune SLANE with its ABCD form (each line of music is different). 5 TODAY S LECTIONARY SCRIPTURES First Lesson: Micah 6:1-8. The Lord has a controversy with Israel, and the prophet asks what the Lord requires. Israel is challenged to remember its salvation at God's hand, and to be mindful of what is required of them: "to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly" with God Psalm: 15. Who shall ascend the hill of the Lord? Those who would be counted righteous are described in David's song. Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 1: God's saving love confounds every source of human boasting. Let your only boasting be in the cross of Christ. Jesus Christ is our "righteousness and sanctification and redemption." Gospel Lesson: Matthew 5:1-12. The Sermon on the Mount begins with eight words of blessing/happiness. NEW! 6 ANNOUNCEMENTS SERMON ON THE MOUNT SERIES JAN. 29 FEB. 19 From January 29 through February 19, Dr. Wesley Wachob and Rev. Brandon Bures will preach a lectionary-based sermon series on The Sermon on the Mount. The Sermon on the Mount, found in the Gospel according to Matthew, includes some of the best known teachings of Jesus such as the Beatitudes and The Lord s Prayer. Make plans to join us all four weeks during this church-wide series at all services. WEDNESDAY EVENING ACTIVITIES Join us this Wednesday evening between 5:00 and 6:00pm in The Wright Place for a delicious meal and good fellowship. This week s menu is: Chicken and Sausage Creole, Rice, Balsamic Succotash, Biscuits, Salad, and Dessert.. Please make your reservations in the registration pads, by calling the church office ( ), or online. Wednesday classes start after dinner at 6:00pm. There are a number of opportunities to connect and learn on Wednesdays. The Senior Pastor s Bible Study is an interesting look at the parables of Jesus through the book Short Stories by Jesus by Amy-Jill Levine. Join in anytime. PENSACOLA SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA at FUMC FEBRUARY 4 We are excited to host the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra again for their Motzart Madness concert on Saturday, February 4. Tickets are available in the Church Office for $10/person. The concert begins at 7:30pm in our Main Sanctuary. SOUPER BOWL SUNDAY FEBRUARY 5 Next Sunday, February 5, is Souper Bowl Sunday. You can help make a difference in our community by bringing in non-perishable food items for Manna Food Pantries. Food will be collected in front of the Main Sanctuary and Wesley Abbey before each of the services next week. SCOUTING SUNDAY FEBRUARY 5 Next Sunday, February 5, First Church will honor our scouting programs during Scouting Sunday, observed by United Methodist churches each year across the United States. First Church has been a long time supporter of Scouting Ministries in Pensacola. We currently have three scouting clubs including, Cub Scout Pack 99, Boy Scout Troop 495 and Girl Scout Troop 110. SATURDAY MORNING WITH FRIENDS FEBRUARY 11 Tickets to the 2nd Annual Saturday Morning with Friends are now available for purchase. Saturday Morning with Friends is an event on Saturday, February 11 hosted by the United Methodist Women to benefit local missions. The morning includes a silent auction, brunch and the presentation Grits, Gayfers, and God Proof We Are Loved by special guest Leslie Anne Tarabella. Tickets are $15. ORGAN CONCERT 4:00 PM AT CHRIST CHURCH Our neighbors at Christ Church have invited us to join them for an organ concert featuring the Grammy-Award-winning Organist Nathan Laube. The concert is at 4:00pm this afternoon and is free and open to the public.
