1 THIRD SUNDAY IN LENT February 28, 2016
2 WELCOME Welcome to First United Methodist Church; we are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us this morning. Founded in 1821, First Church is the oldest Protestant church in the area and the oldest Methodist church in Florida. This historic church, with four Sunday services, has a membership of 3200 and is overflowing with life. We hope that you will consider becoming a member of our church family. You may join any Sunday by profession of faith or transfer of membership. Come and be a part of what God is doing here. LENT We are now in the season of Lent. The Lenten season began on Ash Wednesday (February 10th) and lasts until Easter Sunday. The traditional purpose of Lent is the preparation of the believer through prayer, penance, repentance of sins, almsgiving, atonement, and self-denial. Let us practice these things and make a deeper connection with God as we observe a holy Lent. TORNADO RELIEF It s been a difficult month for Escambia County. In the span of only weeks, two severe weather patterns wreaked havoc in our community. Here are some things our First Church congregation can do to help. 1) Pray for those impacted by the severe weather. 2) Make a monetary donation to help with relief. You can mark your donations as tornado relief and place them in the offering plates this morning. 3) Participate in the Great Day of Service. 4) If you brought any non-perishable food items, you can leave them at the Great Day of Service sign-up tables. 5) Contact the United Way of Escambia County for more ways to help. NURSERY and CHILDREN S BULLETINS Nursery is available this morning for children up to five years old. If you need help locating the nursery, please see an usher or greeter for assistance. Also, children s worship bulletins and crayons are available in the narthex. FLOWERS The flowers in the Sanctuary today are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of George Olliff by his family. This psalm enables the congregation to sing and pray with deep physicality in response to the offer of abundant provision for all who will repent and trust in God. Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 10:1-13 The pattern of the baptized life is to be one of continual repentance, trusting that God will not test us beyond our strength. Gospel Lesson: Luke 13:1-9 Jesus uses the image of a fig tree to illustrate that the time for repentance is at hand.
