1 FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST July 9, :00 & 11:00 a.m. Come to Me (from a 19th century painting by A. Deitrich) C. E. Visminas
2 WELCOME Welcome to First United Methodist Church, we are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us this summer. Founded in 1821, First Church is the oldest Protestant church in the area and the oldest Methodist church in Florida. This historic church, with four regular Sunday services, has a membership of 3200 and is overflowing with life. If you are visiting, we hope that you will consider becoming a member of our church family. You may join any Sunday by profession of faith or transfer of membership. Come and be a part of what God is doing here in VISITOR/NEW MEMBER CLASS We welcome all visitors and new members that are interested in learning more about First Church to an introductory class that consists of four parts. The class assembles at 9:30am in room PH101 next door in the Perry Home. Today s class, Ministries of First Church, is about all the programs and ministries of the church. Next week, Serving at First Church will help you find your place to use your gifts and talents in service in the church and community. On July 23, Tour of First Church will walk you through the historic buildings of our campus. We hope you join us each week. NURSERY & CHILDREN S BULLETINS Nursery is available this morning for children up to five years old. If you need help locating the nursery, please see an usher or greeter for assistance. Also, children s worship bulletins and crayons are available in the narthex. FLOWERS The flowers in the Sanctuary today are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Roy and Claire Roane by their family. PRAYER & PRAYER REQUESTS Prayer is an essential part of the lives of Christians and our worship. If you have a prayer request you would like the church to pray for, please fill out a blue PRAYER REQUEST card located in the pews. Completed cards should be placed in the offering plate or in the prayer request boxes located around campus. These requests are prayed for by our laity prayer team weekly. You can also add prayer requests to the church-wide prayer list by contacting the church office at To receive the church-wide prayer list contact Ginger Raines at GRaines@FUMCPensacola.com. The list is ed out weekly on Tuesday. A list of recent births, deaths, and members who are hospitalized is also available in the church office. The congregation is encouraged to check these lists often and pray regularly. NEXT WEEK at FIRST CHURCH Join us next week here at First Church as we come together to worship God on the Sixth Sunday after Pentecost. Dr. Wachob will be back next week and preach for the 8:00, 9:30, and 11:00am worship services here in the Main Sanctuary. The Rev. Brandon Bures will preach for the ICON worship service at 11:00am in Wesley Abbey. Next Sunday s readings: Genesis 25:19-34; Psalm 119: or Psalm 25; Romans 8:1011; Matthew 13:1-9,

Trey Clegg *Stand as you are able HYMN NOTES Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing (words: Robert Robinson, 1758; music: from Wyeth s Repository of Sacred Music, Part Second, 1813) Born of humble parents, Robinson could not afford schooling for the ministry, so was apprenticed at fourteen to a London barber and hairdresser. After a dissolute youth he was converted by George Whitefield and became a Calvinistic Methodist minister. Like the more famous John Newton s more famous Amazing Grace, his hymn is one of providence and grace. Like Jacob, who raised an Ebenezer (a stone altar which signified that God had brought him thus far), he confesses how great a debtor he is to the grace of God, as are we all. THOSE SERVING TODAY 8:00. GREETERS Marie Percy, Bill Spain & Forrest/Danette Ferguson. USHERS Carl Ashby, David Crow, Nancy Shealy, Jacob Head & Jason Onacki. COMMUNION STEWARD Cissy Martin. 11:00. GREETERS Carol Stevenson, Jackie Perganade & Andrea Edgar. USHERS Rusty Harris, Tom Cathey, Eric Enquist & Wayne Miller. COMMUNION STEWARDS Jerry/Wendy Westmoreland. COMMUNION SERVERS Beverly dejarnette, George Dreading, Marcia Enquist, & Ros Leahy Duckworth.
5 TODAY S LECTIONARY SCRIPTURES First Lesson: Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, Abraham s servant pleads Isaac s case for the hand of Rebekah to her brother Laban. She agrees to go with the servant. Isaac and Rebekah marry. Psalm: 45:10-17 or 72. This is Solomon s prayer asking God for long life that he might administer justice with compassion for the people of Israel. Second Lesson: Romans 7:15-25a. Paul describes the Christians constant struggle between law and grace. He calls them to freedom from sin and the law, through Jesus Christ. Gospel Lesson: Matthew 11:16-19, Because the people have rejected John the Baptist and the prophets before him, Jesus thanks God that the truth has been revealed to babes. All things have been put into Jesus hands, and he invites: Come to me, all you who labor, and I will give you rest. DAILY READINGS The daily readings expand the range of biblical reading in worship and personal devotion by providing daily citations for a three-year cycle. These readings complement the Sunday readings: Monday through Wednesday readings help the reader reflect on and digest what they heard in worship; Thursday through Saturday readings help prepare the reader for the Sunday ahead. Psalm Old Test. New Test. MONDAY Song of Sol. 2:8-13 Genesis 27:30-46 Romans 1:18-25 TUESDAY Song of Sol. 2:8-13 Genesis 29:1-14 Romans 3:1-8 WEDNESDAY Song of Sol. 2:8-13 Genesis 29:31-35 John 13:1-17 THURSDAY 119: Exodus 3:1-6 Romans 2:12-16 FRIDAY 119: Deut. 32:1-10 Romans 15:14-21 SATURDAY 119: Isaiah 2:1-4 John 12:44-50 NOTES

This week s menu is: Tacos with all the fixings, Beans, Rice, Fruit, and Ice Cream. Please make your reservations in the registration pads, by calling the church office ( ), or online. This week s activity is a game of Bingo. Join us for a great time of fellowship and fun as we come together each week during the summer. YOUTH SUNDAY AT ICON TODAY (MUMFORD & SONS) Today, our youth are leading the ICON worship service at 11:00am in Wesley Abbey. This is the second youth Sunday of the year and it is unique! This special worship experience is a traditional Eucharist service, but weaves in the music of the band Mumford & Sons, communicating the salvation message in a fresh and exciting way. The service is led completely by the youth of our church. KIDS FEEDING PROGRAM The Kids Feeding Program is designed to meet the needs of hungry children at times when other resources are not available. If you would like to be a part of this ministry, pick up a flier as you leave or stop by the Church Office. The flier contains instructions and a shopping list. Donations will be collected every fourth Sunday. Read the article in the latest edition of The Methodist Witness to find out more about the history and services of this great ministry. WILDERNESS TRAIL 2017 JULY A group of 107 students and adult leaders will leave this Thursday to go on the youth s annual Wilderness Trail hike on the Appalachian Trail. A list of hikers can be found in the next edition of the church s newsletter. Pray for this group as they travel and pray over their experiences on the trail. God can work in a unique and powerful way in the wilderness. The group will return home on July 20, and they will share their experiences with us in the final Summertime Session on Wednesday, July 26. WORSHIP ARTS WEEK JULY Worship Arts Week is a camp designed to teach children (completed Kindergarten 5th Grade) unique ways to praise God while learning about worship. Attendees will participate in worship arts classes and enjoy a daily time of praise and worship. Classes will be based on interests of participants. Cost is $35 per student. The registration deadline is July 17. TWEENS: ARE YOU AFRAID OF THE DARK? JULY All 5th and 6th graders are invited to join us for Are You Afraid of the Dark, July This is an on-campus retreat for all tweens that includes glow in the dark games, food, fellowship, Bible lessons, movies, and glow mini-golf. We will stay up all night and sleep in the day. Register online or in the Church Office. Cost is $80 per student. Registration ends July 19. THE FRONT LAWN Please mind our progress on the front lawn as we prepare to put down new sod. The old grass and weeds had to be killed before the new grass is installed. It should be green and beautiful again in no time. FUMCPensacola #fumcpcola Additional announcements, our complete church calendar, sermon podcasts and more are available online at FUMCPensacola.com.
