2 WELCOME Welcome to First United Methodist Church, we are delighted that you have chosen to worship with us this morning. Founded in 1821, First Church is the oldest Protestant church in the area and the oldest Methodist church in Florida. This historic church, with four Sunday services, has a membership of 3200 and is overflowing with life. We hope that you will consider becoming a member of our church family. You may join any Sunday by profession of faith or transfer of membership. Come and be a part of what God is doing here. FLOWERS The flower arrangements today are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Horace Shumpert on the occasion of his birthday on September 25th by Berta and family. VISITOR/NEW MEMBER CLASS We welcome all visitors and new members that are interested in learning more about First Church to an introductory class that consists of four parts. The class will assemble at 9:30am in room PH101 next door in the Perry Home. Today s class, Tour of First Church, will walk you through the historic buildings of our campus. We hope you join us each week. OPEN COMMUNION All persons who desire to live and lead a Christian life are invited to the Lord s table for the holy meal. Regardless of who we are, God invites each of us to the gospel feast. Jesus stands waiting to take us in. The invitation is ours to accept. EPISTLE LESSON: James 3:13-4:3, 7-8a James contrasts true and false wisdom. He writes that conflict among the members of the community is based on sinful premises, so they are to submit themselves to God and purify themselves. GOSPEL LESSON: Mark 9:30-37 While passing through Galilee, Jesus once more tells his disciples that he will die and rise again; and once more, they fail to understand. Upon arriving at Capernaum he uses a child to illustrate true humility.

6 ANNOUNCEMENTS WEDNESDAY NIGHT ACTIVITIES Wednesday Night Dinner begins serving at 5:00pm. This week s menu is: Herb Pork Loin, Steamed Carrots, Roasted Potatoes, Bread, Salad, Dessert. You may make your reservations in the registration pads, by calling the church office ( ), or online at FUMCPensacola.com. Please make your reservations by noon on Tuesday. Join in with one of our Wednesday Night Classes beginning at 6:15pm. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday night! GREAT WORLD RELIGIONS: HINDUISM Join us this evening at 5:30pm in Wesley Abbey for Great World Religions: Hinduism. The class will be facilitated by Dr. Wesley Wachob and will include a 30-minute DVD lecture followed by discussion. Study guides are available for $5. CHURCH COUNCIL MEETING Join us tomorrow, Monday, September 24th for our Church Council meeting at 6:00pm in Wesley Abbey. This meeting was originally scheduled for August, but was rescheduled due to Hurricane Isaac. For you convenience, nursery is available by request during the meeting. SILVER AND GOLD SEPT. 27, YOUTH BUILDING You are invited to Silver and Gold, a monthly fellowship luncheon sponsored by 50 Forward Ministries. We gather at 10:30am for coffee and blood pressure checks. For this month only, we are meeting in the Youth Building. A delightful singing group, A Faithful Few will be our entertainment. The luncheon cost is $5.00 and you can make reservations by calling the church office at BLUE LAKE CHURCH WIDE RETREAT Join us on October 12-14th for our annual Church-Wide Family Retreat at Blue Lake Assembly in Andalusia, Alabama.
