2 St. Hilary of Poitiers Parish March 25, 2018 Palm Fifth Sunday Deacon s Corner We are called upon to challenge the crowd, not to follow it. How quickly praise can turn to derision. We see it in business, politics, even with family and friends. One minute somebody is singing praises, the next it s insults and scorn. Today we come to church singing Hosanna! and fifteen minutes later we cry out, Crucify Him! The people wanted an earthly king to shake off Roman occupation and achieve political independence. But how quickly they turned on Jesus when they realized that He would not fulfill their plans. God has something else in store. As Jesus did not meet the expectations of the crowd, or even of His disciples they turned and fled. Peter as we know, denied even knowing him. The crowd chose a common thief to be released rather than Jesus. By the time Jesus was on the cross the only remaining friends were some women and Joseph of Arimathea. The women were said to have ministered to Him and followed Him to the end. They were clearly followers, offering ministry up to and during His death and burial. We are often fickle human beings in search of entertainment. We are designed to look toward the future rather than the past. Palm Sunday is our conscious effort to root ourselves in our past, the very foundation of our faith, the paschal mystery. Being in touch with the paschal mystery reminds us that this life has meaning beyond here and now. We have a future that is eternal. The love, relationships, and bonds we create in this life will endure. The passion and death of Jesus was followed by His resurrection, which gives us a promise and foretaste of that eternal life. Rather than seek the next best thing, upon entering this Holy Week we recall that our faith is rooted in the past, and our destiny is eternal. Have a good Holy Week! 6 Fast and Abstinence and other Acts of Penance for Lent The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, February 14, on all the Friday s of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged when possible, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well was Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended. All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world. The agency s flagship Lenten program is now in its fifth decade, will begin once again on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14th, giving Catholics throughout the country an opportunity to encounter the stories of people in need around the world. Funds collected in the rice bowls, which are turned in at the end of Lent, are distributed both around the world and in local communities to combat hunger 75%of every donation goes to CRS programing in targeted countries worldwide, including Iraq, Nicaragua, Burkina, Faso, Haiti and Malawi while 25% remains in the Archdiocese and is used to support the work of local food cupboards and soup kitchens through Nutritional Development Services.
