2 St. Hilary of Poitiers Parish November 11, 2018 Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Deacon s Corner There is no greater love than this, to lay down one s life for one s friends John 15:13 Today our country celebrates its annual observance of Veteran s Day. It is a time to pause and honor all those among us who have served in the armed Forces. While contemporary political debates are waged over the use of the military, defense spending, and other aspects of the bombs and bullets of hard power, we can unintentionally overlook the actual military who are right in front of us protecting us and our families. As a society we should never forget that those in the military are real people, with hopes and joys, a moral compass and a worldview. These are men and women who are in the service and sincerely desire to give of themselves for the greater good. These are hearts behind the culture that should not be dismissed or underestimated. It is our service men and women who most seek peace because they protect and cherish the common good. Always when it is necessary, good and worth fighting for. It is the vocation of the soldier, to be both patriot and peacemaker. This is the vocation the United States honors in its veterans. It s one that can allows virtue to flourish in the service member and in society when it s exercised well and within the standards of goodness. A service man or woman is at their best when he or she wishes to defend what is right and good and honors their Creator with an open and trusting heart. This is the selfless and sentinel work that protects the common good and helps make it into something worth defending and for which they are willing to die. To be a solider is a solemn vocation given to those who are willing to wear the uniform, apply law, carry arms prudently, and die to themselves for the sake of others. This is the soldier at his or her best, it s also a veteran, the one who was willing to serve for the common good. These are the men and women who deserve our honor and respect today, tomorrow and forever. Happy Veterans Day! May God bless us all! 4 Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray: And do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. History: St. Michael the Archangel has a special heavenly role in doing battle against the devil, protecting the Church, protecting Christians against assault from the devil. The prayer to St. Michael originated with Pope Leo XIII in Legend has it that the Pope, following Holy Mass, received a vision in which he saw the great damage Satan would do to the Church and the world in the 20th century. Pope Leo XIII composed this prayer in response and added it to the Leonnine prayers to be recited after Low Mass, which were originally intended for the intentions of the defense of the temporal sovereignty of the Holy See. Although no longer required to be said after Low Mass, the prayer is still encouraged: "May prayer strengthen us for the spiritual battle that the Letter to the Ephesians speaks of: 'Be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might' (Ephesians 6:10). The Book of Revelation refers to this same battle, recalling before our eyes the image of St Michael the Archangel (cf. Revelation 12:7). Pope Leo XIII certainly had this picture in mind when, at the end of the last century, he brought in, throughout the Church, a special prayer to St Michael: 'Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil...' Although this prayer is no longer recited at the end of Mass, I ask everyone not to forget it and to recite it to obtain help in the battle against the forces of darkness and against the spirit of this world." -- Pope St. John Paul II CatholicPhilly.com Stay up to date with local Catholic news from CatholicPhilly.com. The Tribunal is available to help people who have experienced divorce and who may wish to remarry in the Catholic Church. When a divorce occurs, the Catholic Church always seeks to balance two realities. On one hand the durable bond of marriage. This is God s law. On the other hand, the Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people involved. Even though a Catholic wedding was celebrated, perhaps there was some deficiency in the consent of the parties involved regarding intentions, understanding or ability? The annulment procedure addresses these circumstances. If you are divorced and want to marry in the Church or remarried outside the Catholic Church, please telephone the Tribunal Office at 222 North l7th Street, Philadelphia, PA (215) The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Invites you to the Celebration of the Installation of the Tomb with the Sacred Remains of St. Katharine Drexel Sunday, November 18, the 11:00 AM Solemn Mass Cathedral Basilica of Sts.
