2 St. Hilary of Poitiers Parish March 18, 2018 Fifth Sunday of Lent Deacon s Corner Jesus said, A grain of wheat remains no more than a single grain unless it is dropped into the ground and dies. If it does die it produces many grains. John 12:24 Well, here we are the Sunday before Palm Sunday in just three weeks we will celebrate the Resurrection of our Lord. But before we get to celebrate we need to all share in this sense of impending doom. This supposed doom reminds us however, of the necessity of death for something to bear fruit. If the seed stays on the countertop, it will never bear fruit. But once dead and planted in the ground, the seed produces much fruit. The paschal mystery is presented for us in a simple example. Do we allow ourselves to die to our own desires, wants, and agenda? A question that only each of us can answer. From our Gospel reading it seems Jesus was not quite ready for this moment. But the arrival of the Greeks was a signal that the end was near. Even for Jesus there was no fighting this eternal purpose. This was the reason He came into the world. His example of letting go serves as a model for us. We are not the masters of our own fate. We are not in ultimate control of our own destiny. We do not have the power to plan our own destiny and if we believe we do it is simply that of an illusion. There are greater forces at work. We are called to discern those forces so we can recognize them when they face us. The key for us to eternal life with Him, is to surrender to Him. HILARY S PARISH CENTER It is a simple meal of soup with bread and water. The meal recalls the suffering of the POOR and is eaten in the company of family and friends. The soup is homemade and is quite delicious as is the Italian Bread that is made by a local baker. This year we are adding cheese to the menu. This instruction should help to maintain and recognize the human body as a living temple of Gods presence. Proper respect for the deceased and their remains must always be upheld. Copies on the guidelines are available at the rectory DO YOU KNOW YOUR TRIBUNAL? The Tribunal is available to help people who have experience and who may wish to remarry in the Catholic Church. When a divorce occurs, the Catholic Church always seeks to balance two realities. One on the durable bond of marriage. This is God s law. On the other hand, the Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people involved. Even though a Catholic marriage was celebrated, perhaps there was some deficiency in the consent of the parties involved regarding intentions, understanding or ability? The annulment procedure addresses these circumstances. MARRIAGE CONVALIDATIONS For Catholics a valid sacramental marriage is before a Priest and two witnesses in what is called the Forms of Marriage. 6 Fast and Abstinence and other Acts of Penance for Lent The Bishops of the United States prescribe, as minimal obligation, that all persons who are fourteen years of age and older are bound to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday, February 14, on all the Friday s of Lent and Good Friday. Further, all persons eighteen years of age and older, up to and including their fifty-ninth birthday, are bound to fast by limiting themselves to a single full meal on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday, while the other two meals on those days are to be light. All the faithful are encouraged when possible, to participate at Mass and to receive the Holy Eucharist daily, to celebrate frequently the Sacrament of Penance, to undertake spiritual reading, especially the study of the Sacred Scriptures, and to participate in parish Lenten devotions as well was Lenten education programs. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament is especially recommended. All are encouraged to participate in Operation Rice Bowl which has aided countless hungry persons here in the Archdiocese as well as throughout our nation and our world. The agency s flagship Lenten program is now in its fifth decade, will begin once again on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14th, giving Catholics throughout the country an opportunity to encounter the stories of people in need around the world. Funds collected in the rice bowls, which are turned in at the end of Lent, are distributed both around the world and in local communities to combat hunger 75%of every donation goes to CRS programing in targeted countries worldwide, including Iraq, Nicaragua, Burkina, Faso, Haiti and Malawi while 25% remains in the Archdiocese and is used to support the work of local food cupboards and soup kitchens through Nutritional Development Services.
