2 St. Hilary of Poitiers Parish May 20, 2018 Pentecost Sunday Deacon s Corner Receive the Holy Spirit Just a week ago 45 students of our parish were gifted with the Holy Spirit in the Sacrament of Confirmation. They were given those same seven gifts each of us received at our own confirmation. The gifts of wisdom, understanding, counsel, fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord. These gifts made them full members of our church and in doing so they now have the ability to help spread the Good News of the Lord. These are the same gifts the Apostles received when Jesus appeared to them on Pentecost Sunday. He also gave them the power to forgive sins. We may not have the power to forgive sins but we do have the power to forgive each other. It can be a true challenge to forgive on a daily basis. We have a tendency at times to not let go and harbor things that have either hurt us or someone we love. While we may never forget such experiences we are expected to forgive. In doing so we continue the victory Jesus won on Easter Sunday. By forgiving others we advance the glorious reign of peace in our world. This is all of our tasks, and we have the Holy Spirit to help us. Forgiving means letting go, so that the matter does not consume us from within. Forgiving does not mean the matter was OK. When we forgive we do as it as much for ourselves as we do for others and we do that in particular because God asks us to. Happy Pentecost, Happy Birth of our Church! This instruction should help to maintain and recognize the human body as a living temple of Gods presence. Proper respect for the deceased and their remains must always be upheld.
