2 St. Hilary of Poitiers Parish January 20, 2019 Second Sunday in Ordinary time Deacon s Corner The grace of God has appeared saving all. Titus 2:11-14 The Baptism of Jesus officially ends the Christmas season. Yet the fragrance and joy of Christmas must now be filtered throughout the new year. Christmas highlights what we can experience everyday and through all the seasons of life. Everyday God offers comfort, speaks tenderly and embraces us with mercy. This saving grace is found in the Person of Jesus Christ. By stepping into the waters for baptism, Jesus not only changed the current of those waters. He changed the current of godless ways, worldly desires, sin and lawlessness. By our Baptism into Christ we all have been given that same grace to live temperately, justly and devoutly. We look to our own patron, Saint Hilary whose feast is today. He defended the faith and the divinity of Christ against an unbelieving world, For him Jesus was God from God, light from light, true God from true God. May we make St. Hilary s our prayer and desire in the New Year. Prayer of St. Hilary of Poitiers I am well aware, almighty Father, that in my life I owe you a most particular duty. It is to make my every thought word speak to you. I need to pray for the gift of your help and mercy. As we spread our sails of trusting faith, fill them with the breath of your Spirit, to drive us on as we begin this course pf proclaiming your truth. 4 During our Christmas Season, please join us in reciting the prayer to St. Michael the Archangel. His name is recited in Scriptures as defending God s people against Satan and the forces of evil. We call upon St. Michael in our time of crisis for the Church and the world to stand against the deceits of the devil. We pray for the renewal and purification of the Church and all its members. We will recite this prayer together to conclude the petitions at Mass. The prayer to St. Michael can be found in our pews. Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the Devil. May God rebuke him we humbly pray: And do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host, by the Power of God, cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits, who prowl through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen. CatholicPhilly.com Stay up to date with local Catholic news from CatholicPhilly.com. He will discuss safety measures with Seniors in mind. Last year he answered many questions and gave us insight into what is happening in our neighborhoods. The program was enjoyable and enlightening---a good way to start the New Year. Refreshments will be served, scrip will be available for sale and updates on our planned trips provided. Questions to Margie Magee or Bridget McErlean Burial & Cremation Pope Francis, through the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, has issued instructions regarding the burial of the deceased especially those who choose cremation. This instruction should help to maintain and recognize the human body as a living temple of Gods presence. Proper respect for the deceased and their remains must always be upheld. Copies on the guidelines are available at the rectory For Catholics a valid sacramental marriage is before a Priest and two witnesses in what is called the Form of Marriage. If you have been married by a Justice of the Peace or in a Civil Marriage and wish to have your marriage blessed by the Church and be able to return to the sacraments, most especially, the Sacrament of the Eucharist, please call the rectory at and ask to speak to Fr. Murray. PREPARING FOR YOUR WEDDING You can visit to schedule your Pre-Cana classes. You would select PREPARING FOR MARRIAGE. Scroll down and select FIND OUT MORE ABOUT PREP AND REGISTER. I ask you to bring all our fallen brothers and sisters back to the practice of Faith, and to remove all obstacles that prevent them from receiving your abundant mercy, which flows sacramentally through the heart of the Church. Make Your Power known the them today in every situation. Through the intercession of Mary, Mother of God, their Guardian Angels, their Patron Saints and the ever-prayerful St. Monica, may you pardon Their sins and unshackle them from whatever hinders their freedom to come Home. For You O Good Shepherd, have loved us to the end offered yourself to the Father for the salvation of all. Amen! Please call the rectory at World Day of Consecrated Life Saturday, February 2, 2019 Come, pray and celebrate together with those in Consecrated Life! Holy Hour with Exposition 11:00am Holy Sacrifice of the Mass 12:05pm Cathedral Chapel of Sts. Peter and Paul 1723 Race Street, Philadelphia, PA DO YOU KNOW YOUR TRIBUNAL? The Tribunal is available to help people who have experienced divorce and who may wish to remarry in the Catholic Church. When a divorce occurs, the Catholic Church always seeks to balance two realities. On one hand the durable bond of marriage. This is God s law. On the other hand, the Church is concerned about the spiritual welfare of the people involved. Even though a Catholic wedding was celebrated, perhaps there was some deficiency in the consent of the parties involved regarding intentions, understanding or ability? The annulment procedure addresses these circumstances. If you are divorced and want to marry in the Church or remarried outside the Catholic Church, please telephone the Tribunal Office at 222 North l7th Street, Philadelphia, PA (215) St. Charles Borromeo Seminary Appeal. As the first Catholic institution of higher learning established in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, the history of St. Charles Borromeo Seminary is a vibrant narrative. As the St. Charles Borromeo Appeal begins, please consider joining the next faith-filled chapter of the seminary s story through your generosity. Your support provides for the seminarians and students to today, which helps nourish our hope in the future of our church. Page 5 January 13, 2018
6 The Feast of the Baptism of the Lord As our Church officially brings down the great blue and silver curtain on the Christmas season for another year, we have our personal memories of the season to savor all winter and beyond. No doubt, the season is one for gift giving and receiving. But before we turn our attention elsewhere, the occasion of the Lord s baptism presents us with an opportunity to consider gifts of a different kind. Don t bother searching websites and online catalogs. These are spiritual and special. We can begin with the ultimate gift our parents gave us in their trusting co-operation with God in continuing the human race by bringing no less than us into the world. Never to be forgotten, this gift demands lifelong respect due our parents as they age and perhaps grow more and more dependent on us. After all, we gave them many sleepless nights and piles of diapers and everything involved with food, clothing and shelter for at least 18 straight years. Not to omit love, education, love, support, correction and love. (Did I mention love?) Then, soon after birth, for most of us anyway, they went a step further and gave us something even greater than themselves: our baptism. Our share in God s very life. Our adoption by God as His child also. Our ticket so to speak, to eternal happiness in heaven. What we have done with that ticket is a story for another day. No doubt you know your own birthday. But do you know the date when you were born again at the parish font? Do you ever celebrate it? You should, you know. You really should. Have a candle nearby of a sturdier type than the little ones on your cake, lit for yourself and anybody who asks as a reminder that on that day you became part of God s family too. This is a way to evangelize, that is, preach the Gospel without words for the next generation, and to do it in a family setting. Obviously, we re not saints yet. Lighting that candle reminder is not meant to say differently. However, like so many other moments that come our way, any reminder of Baptism brings up the thorny question of how well we have done with this project of getting ourselves home to heaven by staying close friends with God. Obviously we need Christ s help to keep that account solvent. And that He will do if we make regular prayer deposits and keep current with good deeds for our neighbor. In living out our baptismal obligations to be good persons; good members of the Church; good missionaries by example, always be careful of anyone selling shortcuts. When James Garfield, later to become President of the United States, was principal of Hiram College in Ohio, one father asked him if the course of his studies could not be shortened so that his son might be able to complete his studies in less time. Certainly, Garfield replied. But it all depends on what you want to make of your boy. When God wants to make an oak, He takes one hundred years. When He wants to make a squash, he requires only two months. Reflection by Rev. Leonard N. Peterson
