PARISH OFFICE OPENING HOURS Monday Friday Saturday (Staffed by Volunteers) 10.00am 2.00pm 9.30am 12.00noon To be a lively community connecting with God s love in new and imaginative ways
Collect, Reading, Psalm and Post-Communion Prayer COLLECT O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that with you as our ruler and guide we may so pass through things temporal that we lose not our hold on things eternal; grant this, heavenly Father, for our Lord Jesus Christ s sake, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Or ADDITIONAL COLLECT Gracious Father, by the obedience of Jesus you brought salvation to our wayward world: draw us into harmony with your will, that we may find all things restored in him, our Saviour Jesus Christ. FIRST READING Zechariah Rejoice greatly, O daughter Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter Jerusalem! Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. He will cut off the chariot from Ephraim and the war horse from Jerusalem; and the battle-bow shall be cut off, and he shall command peace to the nations; his dominion shall be from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth. As for you also, because of the blood of my covenant with you, I will set your prisoners free from the waterless pit. Return to your stronghold, O prisoners of hope; today I declare that I will restore to you double. SECOND READING Romans a I do not understand my own actions. For I do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate. Now if I do what I do not want, I agree that the law is good. But in fact it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. For I know that nothing good dwells within me, that is, in my flesh. I can will what is right, but I cannot do it. For I do not do the good I want, but the evil I do not want is what I do. Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer I that do it, but sin that dwells within me. So I find it to be a law that when I want to do what is good, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God in my inmost self, but I see in my members another law at war with the law of my mind, making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! PSALM Psalm The Lord is gracious and merciful : long-suffering and of great goodness. The Lord is loving unto every man : and his mercy is over all his works. All thy works praise thee O Lord : and thy saints give thanks unto thee. They shew the glory of thy kingdom : and talk of thy power; That thy power thy glory and mightiness of thy kingdom : might be known unto men. Thy kingdom is an ever lasting kingdom : and thy dominion en dureth through out all ages. The Lord upholdeth all such as fall : and lifteth up all those that are down. GLORIA
GOSPEL Matthew , At that time Jesus said, To what will I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the market-places and calling to one another, We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we wailed, and you did not mourn. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He has a demon ; the Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax-collectors and sinners! Yet wisdom is vindicated by her deeds. I thank you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. POST COMMUNION Eternal God, comfort of the afflicted and healer of the broken, you have fed us at the table of life and hope: teach us the ways of gentleness and peace, that all the world may acknowledge the kingdom of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Please Remember in your Prayers Parish Outreach: Living God s Love: Making New Disciples: Authors of devotional material The Sick: Ian Fulton, James, Peter, Jean Harris, Kat, Anne Parnwell The Recently Departed: First Anniversary of Death: Gill Murray

CALLING ALL ARTISTS (of all kinds): Would you like to display your art work or artistic talent at the Churches Together Harpenden Arts Festival 2018? If you paint, draw, pottery, write poetry, perform drama, etc. and you would like to participate please see the leaflet at the back of all three churches and contact John Swain the sooner the better. THE NEXT PARISH FIRST COMMUNION COURSE for children who will be over 7 years old before 1 September will commence on Sunday 1 October. If you have not received an invitation and your child would like to attend contact the Parish Office for details and an application form. Please approach a member of the clergy team if you would like more information. All application forms must be completed and returned to the Parish Office by Friday 28 July. CONFIRMATION CLASSES: Please sign up now: We will begin confirmation classes in mid- September to prepare for the confirmation service at All Saints on 12 November. Classes for Adults will be on Tuesday evenings and for children on Sunday afternoons. If you are interested please sign up at the back of church or contact the parish office or the clergy as soon as possible. HILARY PASK: We are very pleased to announce that Hilary has been approved to begin training for Reader ministry. Please keep her in your prayers as she embarks on this in the autumn. Congratulations Hilary. WANTED! A VOLUNTEER TO BE PROPERTY MANAGER: We are looking for someone to look after our four properties (three clergy houses and an office - not the church buildings!). The role will involve supervising any repairs and maintenance jobs, however large or small, to any of these buildings - liaising with contractors, obtaining quotes where necessary and ensuring that work gets carried out satisfactorily. Just being available to give practical advice about any property related matters would be really helpful too. If this sounds like something you might be interested in, then please contact one of the Parish Wardens (Michelle McCulloch or Tony Gilbert) to find out more. AFFORDABLE HOUSING: A member of High Street Methodist is concerned about the lack of affordable housing in Harpenden and is interested in forming a group with a view to setting up a community land trust (see for more information). Other agencies/organisations would have to be brought on board. If you have any expertise in this area and/or are interested in being part of this group, please contact Deacon Angie Allport on or angie.allport@methodist.org.uk CHURCHES TOGETHER CHRISTIAN ARTS FESTIVAL IN LATE SPRING If you would be willing to be part of the planning team, please contact the Rector as soon as possible. Great opportunity to help shape this important ecumenical event. ALL CHURCH SCHOOL APPLICATIONS To assist clergy at St Nicholas, All Saints and St Mary s with preparing reference forms for school applications to St George s, St Dominic s and St Nicholas schools, parents should register family attendance at services by either signing the Welcome Register at the back of church or by way of Crèche, Choir and Sunday Club registers.
All Saints Church Notices ALL SAINTS' LOCAL MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT TEAM exists to support every member of our church family in: enabling people to encounter God in worship and prayer encouraging and teaching people to grow as His disciples equipping people to live as Christians in the community. Prayer ministry is available after the 10.30am Worship Service BIBLE READING NOTES: Please order from Rosemary (761322). ALL SAINTS EMERGENCY PRAYER CHAIN: Please call LIFTS TO CHURCH: tel RECORDINGS OF 10.30am SERMONS: & LARKS IN THE PARKS, Thank you to those from All Saints and Batford Methodist churches for your setting up, taking down, welcoming, story telling, messy crafting and sweetie distribution yesterday at Larks in the Park. As disciples of Christ it is most important to manifest that Christian presence at our community events, so thank you for your time and sterling efforts which were most appreciated by those who visited us. GEOFF ACKROYD S FUNERAL will take place on Thursday 13 July at High Street Methodist Church at 2pm and all are welcome to attend. Many of you will have known Geoff in his many roles in Harpenden and he will be sorely missed. BUSY BUNNIES, PARENT CARE & TODDLER GROUP will not continue after the Summer unless there are some helpers for setting up 2-3 times a month on a Thursday from 9am until 10am. Please consider helping to let this activity have a future as it is an important outreach to families-one of our parish priorities. Contact if you can help or for details. COULD YOU STEP UP AND SUPPORT OUR CHURCH FAMILY? More representatives of both our congregations are asked to offer to join All Saints District Church Council. We have almost no-one speaking for All Saints and its interests at the parish council and deanery level either. This leaves us very vulnerable and disempowered-so please offer and support your church family now. Speak to the Wardens; Elizabeth, Goetz, Pete or Rev Linda to know more. SUNDAY CLUB LEADER(S) REQUIRED. We have a growing number of children in our Sunday Clubs and have taken the decision, for the Sept 2017 academic year, to have Y-nots for Y6 upwards. This gives a core group of children each week to make it viable and will hopefully enable this group to become re-established. We therefore need another Y-not leader to work alongside Sally with this group. If you are interested in this, or in working with any of our Sunday Club groups, please talk to the Sunday Club coordinator, Gemma Moss, as soon as possible. SAVE THE DATE; Confirmation at All Saints-the Deanery Confirmation takes place in All Saints this November 12. If you have not been baptised or confirmed you may like to enjoy this in your own church (the last occasion was 2008!). There are 7 sessions in the Autumn which enable you to prepare by exploring your Christian beliefs more. Anyone can join these sessions even if you are unsure about Confirmation or want to join in as a refresher. Call for info and sign up on the sheets in the foyer. KNEBWORTH TRIP: Thank you to everyone who came along to the 2017 All Saints family day out to Knebworth. Thank you to everyone who assisted others to be able to take part by supporting the cake sale, contributing tea/coffee money, inviting people or encouraging us in organising it. Suggestions welcome for a 2018 day out! Liz and Julie SUMMER READING: If you have books you have finished with and would like new to you reading for summer, take advantage of this year s book swap. Bring one and take one.
