2 Collects, Readings and Gospel COLLECT Almighty God, you have knit together your elect in one communion and fellowship in the mystical body of your Son Christ our Lord: grant us grace so to follow your blessed saints in all virtuous and godly living that we may come to those inexpressible joys that you have prepared for those who truly love you; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. ALTERNATIVE COLLECT God of holiness, your glory is proclaimed in every age: as we rejoice in the faith of your saints, inspire us to follow their example with boldness and joy; through Jesus Christ our Lord. FIRST READING Isaiah On this mountain the Lord of hosts will make for all peoples a feast of rich food, a feast of well-matured wines, of rich food filled with marrow, of well-matured wines strained clear. And he will destroy on this mountain the shroud that is cast over all peoples, the sheet that is spread over all nations; he will swallow up death for ever. Then the Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces, and the disgrace of his people he will take away from all the earth, for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day, Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, so that he might save us. This is the Lord for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in his salvation. SECOND READING, Revelation a Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away. And the one who was seated on the throne said, See, I am making all things new. Also he said, Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true. Then he said to me, It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life. PLEASE REMEMBER IN YOUR PRAYERS Parish Outreach: Going Deeper into God: all who pray at home The Sick: Simon Thomas, Harold Gill, Angela, Mary, Marjorie & Richard Sinfield The Recently Departed: First Anniversary of Death: Monika Kielty PRAYER REQUESTS: If you would like prayer for yourself or someone you know, clergy pray daily for those who have asked for our prayers. Anyone may put a name on our prayer list by contacting the clergy, a Reader, or the parish office. If you wish to be prayed for publicly at our Sunday Services please say so, otherwise your name remains on the clergy daily prayer list.

3 PSALM The earth is the Lord s and all that therein is the compass of the world and they that dwell there in. For he hath founded it up on the seas and pre pared it up on the floods. Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord or who shall rise up in his holy place? Even he that hath clean hands and a pure heart and that hath not lift up his mind unto vanity, nor sworn to de ceive his neighbour. He shall receive the blessing from the Lord and righteousness from the God of his sal vation. This is the generation of them that seek him : even of them that seek thy face O Jacob. Gloria GOSPEL John When Mary came where Jesus was and saw him, she knelt at his feet and said to him, Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died. When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who came with her also weeping, he was greatly disturbed in spirit and deeply moved. He said, Where have you laid him? They said to him, Lord, come and see. Jesus began to weep. So the Jews said, See how he loved him! But some of them said, Could not he who opened the eyes of the blind man have kept this man from dying? Then Jesus, again greatly disturbed, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone was lying against it. Jesus said, Take away the stone. Martha, the sister of the dead man, said to him, Lord, already there is a stench because he has been dead for four days. Jesus said to her, Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? So they took away the stone. And Jesus looked upwards and said, Father, I thank you for having heard me. I knew that you always hear me, but I have said this for the sake of the crowd standing here, so that they may believe that you sent me. When he had said this, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come out! The dead man came out, his hands and feet bound with strips of cloth, and his face wrapped in a cloth. Jesus said to them, Unbind him, and let him go. POST COMMUNION God, the source of all holiness and giver of all good things: may we who have shared at this table as strangers and pilgrims here on earth be welcomed with all your saints to the heavenly feast on the day of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord. If you would like a Home Visit or Home Communion, please contact Parish Clergy or the Parish Office.

4 Parish Notices for all three churches REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY EVENTS-100 th Anniversary of the end of WW1: All our church services will include some form of remembrance. There is the annual Remembrance service on the Harpenden Green at 10.45am. There is an special ecumenical service of Remembrance with readings and music at High Street Methodist at 5.30pm. There is the Last Post and Lighting of the Beacon at 6.45pm in front of Public Hall and ringing of bells at 7pm HELP US TO SELECT OUR CHRISTIAN AID PARTNERSHIP FOR 2018 & 2019: As a congregation, we always support a Christian Aid partnership. This year we would like you to select which programme we back next. We have identified two fantastic projects which will help people who are currently in need of help. In both cases each pound we donate is multiplied by support from governments. Option one is a programme supporting people forced to flee Syria who need support in Iraq and Lebanon. Option two is a programme to create jobs for young people in Ghana where half of young people are unemployed. To vote and get more details on each project visit the Parish of Harpenden page on Facebook 25 NOVEMBER CELEBRATION of 800 years Luncheon: Join Bishop Richard and Jennifer Llewellin, Archdeacon Christopher and Ann Futcher after the morning services for lunch at the Aldwickbury Golf Club for a two course-carvery lunch, 1-4pm. Price 30 per person. Purchase tickets from parish office. Anyone from the parish is welcome to attend. Please let us know if you are pescetarian, vegetarian, vegan or have any special dietary requirements. TRAIDCRAFT: You may be aware that Traidcraft, the charitable company that has done so much to raise standards of production by impoverished producers in tropical countries, is in serious financial difficulties and unless there is a huge increase in turnover in the next quarter they are likely to close a lot of their operations. The directors recognise the need to refocus their efforts, but meanwhile, a big boost in turnover is needed to avert a collapse. We are continuing to stock Cornelia s and our Fairtrade stalls in the parish from Traidcraft for as long possible and appeal to all our congregations to support us and them by purchasing Fairtrade goods through church and/ or from Oxfam in town. SAS YOUTH GROUP meets TODAY for a trip to watch the fireworks at Harpenden Rugby Club. SAS is our parish youth group for children in school years 6-9, new members welcome. Do join us for outings, discussion, games and food. Contact Revd Sally Goodson if you need further information. (associate.vicar@stmarys.parishofharpenden.org). ALL CHURCH SCHOOL APPLICATIONS Children intending to apply to St George's Secondary School and St Nicholas Primary School are advised to submit a clergy reference form with their application. Both schools give priority to children with a clergy reference and to ensure this can be given a Record of Attendance should be completed. In the case of St George's this should be completed for 2 years before application and for 1 year prior to St Nicholas. The School websites provide further details of their admissions criteria. Both schools will consider applications without a clergy reference but through a separate admissions category. Based on current demographic trends in Harpenden there is greater pressure for entry at secondary school level than for the Primary school.
