2 Collect, Reading, Psalm and Post-Communion Prayer COLLECT Almighty God, who sent your Holy Spirit to be the life and light of your Church: open our hearts to the riches of your grace, that we may bring forth the fruit of the Spirit in love and joy and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Or ADDITIONAL COLLECT Gracious Father, revive your Church in our day, and make her holy, strong and faithful, for your glory s sake in Jesus Christ our Lord. FIRST READING 1 Kings When Elijah reached Horeb, the mountain of God, he came to a cave, and spent the night there. Then the word of the LORD came to him, saying, What are you doing here, Elijah? He answered, I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away. He said, Go out and stand on the mountain before the LORD, for the LORD is about to pass by. Now there was a great wind, so strong that it was splitting mountains and breaking rocks in pieces before the LORD, but the LORD was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the LORD was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a sound of sheer silence. When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave. Then there came a voice to him that said, What are you doing here, Elijah? He answered, I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the Israelites have forsaken your covenant, thrown down your altars, and killed your prophets with the sword. I alone am left, and they are seeking my life, to take it away. Then the LORD said to him, Go, return on your way to the wilderness of Damascus; when you arrive, you shall anoint Hazael as king over Aram. Also you shall anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king over Israel; and you shall anoint Elisha son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah as prophet in your place. Whoever escapes from the sword of Hazael, Jehu shall kill; and whoever escapes from the sword of Jehu, Elisha shall kill. Yet I will leave seven thousand in Israel, all the knees that have not bowed to Baal, and every mouth that has not kissed him. SECOND READING Romans Moses writes concerning the righteousness that comes from the law, that the person who does these things will live by them. But the righteousness that comes from faith says, Do not say in your heart, Who will ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down) or Who will descend into the abyss? (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). But what does it say? The word is near you, on your lips and in your heart (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); because if you confess with your lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. The scripture says, No one who believes in him will be put to shame. For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; the same Lord is Lord of all and is generous to all who call on him. For, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved. But how are they to call on one in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in one of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone to proclaim him? And how are they to proclaim him unless they are sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!

3 PSALM Psalm I will hearken what the Lord God will say con cerning me : for he shall speak peace unto his people and to his saints, that they turn not a gain. For his salvation is nigh them that fear him : that glory may dwell in our land. Mercy and truth are met to gether : righteousness and peace have kissed each other. Truth shall flourish out of the earth : and righteousness hath look-ed down from heaven. Yea the Lord shall shew loving kindness : and our land shall give her increase. Righteousness shall go be fore him : and he shall direct his going in the way. GLORIA GOSPEL Matthew Immediately after feeding the crowd with the five loaves and two fish, Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking towards them on the lake. But when the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified, saying, It is a ghost! And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid. Peter answered him, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. He said, Come. So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came towards Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me! Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt? When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshipped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God. POST COMMUNION Holy Father, who gathered us here around the table of your Son to share this meal with the whole household of God: in that new world where you reveal the fullness of your peace, gather people of every race and language to share in the eternal banquet of Jesus Christ our Lord. SUNDAY 27 AUGUST (PLEASE NOTE in your DIARY) will be a combined Parish Service at All Saints at 10.30am. There will be an 8am said communion service at St Nicholas. But there will be no other morning services in the parish. WANT TO EXPLORE THE BASICS OF THE CHRISTIAN FAITH? COME ALONG TO THE ALPHA COURSE this autumn. Sponsored by Harpenden Churches Together. CONFIRMATION CLASSES: Please sign up now: We will begin confirmation classes in mid- September to prepare for the confirmation service at All Saints on 12 November. Classes for Adults will be on Tuesday evenings and for children on Sunday afternoons. WHEATHAMPSTEAD DEANERY RETREAT AT LAUNDE ABBEY, LEICESTERSHIRE: FRIDAY 28 - SUNDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 2018 A provisional booking for this event has been made, but requires a minimum of 25 people to make it viable. The weekend will include periods of silence and periods of companionship and conviviality. It starts with dinner on the Friday and ends with afternoon tea on the Sunday, cost 174 per person. 5 THE ANNUAL CANON O'LEARY MEMORIAL MASS HELD FOR PEOPLE WITH SPECIAL NEEDS AND THEIR FAMILIES AND CARERS takes place on Saturday 16 September 2017 at St Dominic Primary School, Southdown Road Harpenden AL5 1PF, 2.30pm for mass at 3.00pm. There will be a tea party/picnic following the mass. The event is usually finished by 5.00pm. Everyone is welcome. ALL CHURCH SCHOOL APPLICATIONS To assist clergy at St Nicholas, All Saints and St Mary s with preparing reference forms for school applications to St George s, St Dominic s and St Nicholas schools, parents should register family attendance at services by either signing the Welcome Register at the back of church or by way of Crèche, Choir and Sunday Club registers.

6 All Saints Church Notices ALL SAINTS' LOCAL MINISTRY DEVELOPMENT TEAM exists to support every member of our church family in: enabling people to encounter God in worship and prayer encouraging and teaching people to grow as His disciples equipping people to live as Christians in the community. SUMMER HOLIDAY/AUGUST-SUNDAY SERVICES continue as usual but with Sunday Club Specials for young people and children and a variety of service styles week by week. On 27 August the combined Parish morning worship takes place at All Saints at 10.30am. SUNDAY CLUB LEADER(S) REQUIRED. We have a growing number of children in our Sunday Clubs and have taken the decision, for the Sept 2017 academic year, to have Y-nots for Y6 upwards. This gives a core group of children each week to make it viable and will hopefully enable this group to become re-established. We therefore need another Y-not leader to work alongside Sally with this group. If you are interested in this, or in working with any of our Sunday Club groups, please talk to the Sunday Club coordinator, Gemma Moss, as soon as possible. SAVE THE DATE; Confirmation at All Saints-the Deanery Confirmation takes place in All Saints this November 12. If you have not been baptised or confirmed you may like to enjoy this in your own church (the last occasion was 2008!). There are 7 sessions in the Autumn, starting on 19 September, which enable you to prepare by exploring your Christian beliefs more. Anyone can join these sessions even if you are unsure about Confirmation or want to join in as a refresher. Call for info and sign up on the sheets in the foyer. SUMMER READING: If you have books you have finished with and would like new to you reading for summer, take advantage of this year s book swap. Bring one and take one. HALL & KITCHEN: Work started on Monday 31 July to renovate the hall kitchen and should take approximately 2 weeks. During that time the hall will be out of use for everybody. Temporary arrangements will be made for coffee after Sunday services. St Mary s Church Notices STORYTELLERS: There will be story telling for the children, in the hall, during the 9.30 service on Sundays 13 and 20 August. EXPLORERS TEAM would like to welcome new members to the team. Please speak to Jenny Goulding if that might be you. The team would also welcome help bringing their boxes back from the Scout Hall after the service on a Sunday morning. PARISH GIVING SCHEME packs available at the back of church. 7 MISSION ACTION PLAN: there will be a meeting after the 9.30 service on 20 August to review our MAP targets and update the plan. If you would like to contribute to that meeting but are unable to attend please speak to Sally. PATTERN OF SERVICES: the current pattern of services works well and will remain as it is, without further review. St Nicholas Church Notices THE CHURCH HALL IS CLOSED for annual maintenance work from 31 July-18 August. Access to the church may also be restricted at times and the church will be closed on 14 August. MORNING SERVICES: No Friday morning services in August at St Nicholas. EVENING PRAYER: No Evening Prayer at St Nicholas this week. EVENING SERVICES: No Sunday evening services in August at St Nicholas. BIBLE READING NOTES SEPT-DEC 17: The next set of Bible Reading Notes is available to be collected at the back of the church. Any queries please contact Jenny Clark WE NEED YOUR HELP WE NEED SERVERS FOR OUR 9.30AM SERVICE. Any young person interested or any adult under age of 80 is welcome to volunteer. Training provided. Please help us with this important service for our worship. PRESENTATION OF BIBLES TO SUNDAY CLUB LEAVERS: If any families with children in Year 6 were unable to attend the service on 16 July, please collect your Bible from the Parish Office. 9:30 SUNDAY CLUB: Is looking for a teenager to support the teachers in Scramblers or Climbers. Please for more details, stnicholassundayclub@gmail.com TIME AND TALENT SURVEY: You can still fill one out! They are on the Welcome Table. Please give them to the Rector. We are still creating a data base from the ones filled out and hope to have results soon.
