PRELUDE S T. ANDREW S Lutheran Church 1416 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC Fifth Sunday After Pentecost June 24, :30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. The Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) is the red worship book found in your pew racks. Service music, indicated with a page number, can be found in the front portion of the book. Hymns, indicated by number, are found in the back portion of the book. Congregational responses are printed in bold type. b GATHERING b CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the presiding minister begins. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen If we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. Let us confess our sin to God who is faithful and just and who has promised to forgive our sin and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection and self-examination. Most merciful God, we confess to you that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not trusted you with our whole heart; we have not loved one another in deed and in truth. In your compassion forgive our sin and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life through Jesus Christ our light and our truth. Amen. With joy, I proclaim to you that Almighty God, rich in mercy, abundant in love, forgives you all your sin and grants you newness of life in Jesus Christ, our Lord. Thanks be to God. We remain kneeling as the pastor offers God s absolution and forgiveness. Following absolution we stand for the hymn, facing the processional cross as we begin.
GATHERING SONG: We Praise You, O God ELW Hymn 870 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. KYRIE Cantor REFRAIN Cantor: For the reign of God, and for peace throughout the world, for the unity of all...refrain For your people here, who have come to give you praise, for the strength to live your Word...REFRAIN Following final refrain we sing: Cantor
HYMN OF PRAISE: Now the Feast and Celebration
PRAYER OF THE DAY The Lord be with you. And also with you. Let us pray. O God of creation, eternal majesty, you preside over land and sea, sunshine and storm. By your strength pilot us, by your power preserve us, by your wisdom instruct us, and by your hand protect us, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. We sit. CHILDREN S SERMON (11:00 a.m.) b WORD b FIRST READING: JOB 38: The Lord answered Job out of the whirlwind: 2 Who is this that darkens counsel by words without knowledge? 3Gird up your loins like a man, I will question you, and you shall declare to me. 4 Where were you when I laid the foundation of the earth? Tell me, if you have understanding. 5Who determined its measurements surely you know! Or who stretched the line upon it? 6On what were its bases sunk, or who laid its cornerstone 7when the morning stars sang together and all the heavenly beings shouted for joy? 8 Or who shut in the sea with doors when it burst out from the womb? 9when I made the clouds its garment, and thick darkness its swaddling band, 10and prescribed bounds for it, and set bars and doors, 11 and said, Thus far shall you come, and no farther, and here shall your proud waves be stopped? The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
PSALM 107: The following refrain will be sung first by the cantor and then by the congregation each time thereafter. Some went down to the sea in ships, to trade on the mighty waters. These have seen the deeds of the Lord, the wonders he does in the deep. REFRAIN For he spoke and raised up the stormwind, tossing high the waves of the sea that surged to heaven and dropped to the depths. Their souls melted away in their distress. REFRAIN Then they cried to the Lord in their need, and he rescued them from their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper, and the waves of the sea were hushed. REFRAIN They rejoiced because of the calm, and he led them to the haven they desired. Let them thank the Lord for his mercy, his wonders for the children of men. REFRAIN SECOND READING: 2 CORINTHIANS 6:1-13 1As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says, At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you. See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! 3 We are putting no obstacle in anyone s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry, 4 but as servants of God we have commended ourselves in every way: through great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities, 5 beatings, imprisonments, riots, labors, sleepless nights, hunger; 6 by purity, knowledge, patience, kindness, holiness of spirit, genuine love, 7 truthful speech, and the power of God; with the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and for the left; 8 in honor and dishonor, in ill repute and good repute. We are treated as impostors, and yet are true; 9 as unknown, and yet are well known; as dying, and see we are alive; as punished, and yet not killed; 10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing everything. 11 We have spoken frankly to you Corinthians; our heart is wide open to you. 12 There is no restriction in our affections, but only in yours. 13 In return I speak as to children open wide your hearts also. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.
We stand. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to you, O Lord. GOSPEL: MARK 4: When evening had come, [Jesus said to the disciples,] Let us go across to the other side. 36 And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing? 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, Peace! Be still! Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith? 41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him? The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. SERMON We sit.
We stand and sing. HYMN OF THE DAY: Eternal Father, Strong to Save ELW Hymn 756 APOSTLES CREED: Please turn to the back inside cover of your hymnal We remain standing for the prayers. We greet one another with a gesture of peace using these or similar words: Peace be with you. We sit. OFFERTORY ANTHEM: The Lone Wild Bird Jonathan Adams The lone, wild bird in lofty flight is still with you, nor leaves your sight. And I am yours! I rest in you. Great Spirit, come, rest in me, too. Each secret thought is known to you, the path I walk my whole life through, My days, my deeds, my hopes, my fears, my deepest joys, my silent tears.
