2 From the Pastor February 2, 2014 Feast of the Presentation of the Lord Pre-empts the 4 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Week of Prayer for Christian Unity January Orations for Christian Unity - C We reflect on the third and last of three sets of orations prescribed for the week of Prayer for Christian Unity. As the above image of a double-vision of a divided Christ shows, the disunity of Christians makes it difficult for us and all the world to see Christ as our sole Savior. Our fractured faith will present a shattered, confusing and incomplete picture of Jesus Christ - until we show - and live by - one and the same understanding and image of the Lord! May the Holy Spirit help us truly become one in Christ! As we recall the 40-day-old Jesus Presentation in the Temple, may we be ready to greet and meet Christ when He comes to us - in the events of everyday life - and when we appear before Him at the end of our earthly life. Christian Unity - C - Collect Look with favor on your people, Lord, we pray, and pour out upon them the gifts of your Spirit, that they may grow constantly in love of the truth and devote themselves with zeal to perfect unity among Christians. What is Truth? Standing before Pilate in a mockery of a trial Jesus said: I came into the world to testify to the truth. All who belong to the truth listen to my voice, to which Pilate scornfully retorted, What is truth? [Cf. John 18:37b-38a] Sadly, many in today s world refuse to believe that Jesus is THE source of the God s honest truth! Even among Christians there are major disagreements over what is truth? Not all who call themselves Christians believe life begins at conception, that the definition of marriage cannot be altered, that the Eucharist is our Lord s Real Presence, or that the Pope, as Saint Peter s successor, has a major role to play in the day-to-day activities of the Church - as the simple fisherman once called Simon did! And so we rightly pray that the Holy Spirit will gift us with all we need to discover, understand and live by the God s honest truth! For only with the healing balm of the Spirit can we move beyond past hurts and fractured relationships. Christian Unity - C - Prayer over the Offerings May the sacrifice we offer you purify us, O Lord, and make all who are joined in one Baptism partakers at last of one and the same celebration of these mysteries. Gathered All Together As One. Imagine what it was like for those who witnessed the early life of the Church to see simple fishermen, scholarly Pharisees, sinful tax collectors and prostitutes, Jews and Greeks, slaves and masters, men and women, gathered into one Body, despite their many differences. It must have been mindboggling! Imagine the effect the Church could have on today s world if all who call themselves Christian were truly one in mind and heart, in thought and deed, and above all, in weekly worship. It, too, would be truly mind-boggling! We rejoice to see hordes of people respectfully worshiping at Mass, as I did with Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI in Yankee Stadium in 2008, or as an estimated 3.5 million did at Pope Francis Mass on the Rio de Janeiro beach; or as a record 5 million did for the closing Mass of the 1995 World Youth Day in the Philippines with the soon-to-be Saint John Paul II. If all Christians were one, we d have such awe-inspiring gatherings each week - everywhere! Christian Unity - C - Prayer after Communion Receiving the Sacrament of your Christ, we pray, O Lord, that you may renew in your Church the sanctifying grace you have given and that all who glory in the name of Christian may come to serve you in unity of faith. United in Service. Even if we have not yet resolved our many differences in theology and liturgy, Church structure and practice, dogma and doctrine, we can be united in SERVICE. And did not Jesus say all would know we are His disciples by our love for one another - and for others? [Cf. John 13:35; Luke 10:25-37] Perhaps as we serve one another - and serve others in Christ s holy Name - we will be infused with the love we need to settle all our differences! May we help renew the Church by our efforts to join with other Christians in loving service to each other - and to all of God s people! With God s love and my prayers, Reverend Michael J. Kreder

4 PRAY FOR OUR MILITARY DREW NAPOLI - CAPT. DANIELLE REID - PAUL FEDORISIN 2LT. BRENDAN CAHILL KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS MARCH OF DIMES As most people are aware, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt suffered from Polio. But did you know he was instrumental in the founding of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Shortly after his death in 1945, citizens began a campaign to the Treasury Department to have his likeness depicted on a coin. The Roosevelt dime was released on January 30, 1946 which was the President's birthday. As a method of fund raising to aid victims of polio, the public was urged to send in 'a dime' to the Foundation. The Foundation was later renames to the 'March of Dimes.' ARCHBISHOP'S ANNUAL APPEAL "When I called, you answered" This year's theme of the Archbishop's Annual Appeal is "When I Called, You Answered." This is a perfect opportunity for us to reflect on God's generosity to us. This year's AAA will continue to support the many good works of the ministries throughout the Archdiocese. This appeal is meant to instill in us all a heart and spirit of gratitude, reminding us that God will always be there. Through this campaign, we are called on to answer the cry of the poor; to help thoswe who are in need; to feed, shelter, clothe, teach, and bring the Faith to those who are in need of hearing the good news of the Gospel. Thousands of people in the four counties served by the Archdiocese of Newark are assisted each year through various programs and ministries funded by the Appeal. Our parish also benefits by receiving a rebate from the appeal if it exceeds its goal. THE PRESENTATION OF THE LORD First Reading: Malachi 3:1-4 The prophet Malachi speaks to us about God sending a messenger to prepare the way and that God will suddenly come and appear at the temple. Malachi continues by telling us the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to God. Second Reading: Hebrews 2:14-18 Jesus became like us. He shared fully in our humanity. By his death he freed us from the fear of death. Because Jesus was tested by suffering, he is able to help those who are also tempted. Gospel: Luke 2:22-40 According to the law of Moses, Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the temple to be consecrated. They offered a sacrifice according to the law, a pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons. Simeon, a holy and righteous man, took the child into his arms and praised God. Simeon then spoke to Mary. He told Mary that Jesus is destined to be the downfall and the rise of many in Israel. Anna, a prophet of great age, praised God and spoke of the child who came for the redemption of Jerusalem Bon Venture Services, Inc. 7:00 p.m. - Prayer Service
