2 From the Pastor April 1, 2012 Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord They pressed into service a passer-by, Simon, a Cyrenian, who was coming in from the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to carry his cross. [Mark 15: 21] To help open the treasures of the revised Roman Missal, each week I m giving a reflection on the three Mass orations of that day, gleaned from the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts. I m truly amazed at the theological depth and beauty of these prayers; I hope you are, too! Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Collect Almighty ever-living God, who as an example of humility for the human race to follow caused our Savior to take flesh and submit to the Cross, graciously grant that we may heed his lesson of patient suffering and so merit a share in his Resurrection. Liturgy Makes Present, It Does Not Reenact! It is truly a challenge NOT to see the liturgical events in this holiest of weeks as a reenactment of what happened two millennia ago. But liturgy is NOT a play that simply recalls the past! Divine worship is a sacred event that makes present for us, here and now, the saving events of so long ago! Today, at first, we joyfully sing and wave palm branches; but after the Passion is proclaimed, we leave in humble silence, as we go to die with Christ so as to rise with Him! Today s Collect asks God to strengthen us and to help us participate in the sacred mysteries. As Jesus once entered His own city, Jerusalem, to initiate the Paschal Mystery of His Passion, Death and Resurrection, Jesus once entered into us - at our Baptism - which incorporated us into Himself! Today we re-up or re-enlist with Christ, first by accepting a palm branch, and then by hearing His Word and by receiving His Body and Blood! Are you ready to journey with Christ this week and for the rest of your earthly life so you can one day join Him in heaven? Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord: Prayer over the Offerings Through the Passion of your Only Begotten Son, O Lord, may our reconciliation with you be near at hand, so that, though we do not merit it by our own deeds, yet by this sacrifice made once for all, we may feel already the effects of your mercy. All This To Appease An Angry God? That s what some erroneously say this week is all about: that one man s suffering and death atoned for every man and woman s sin. And while that s partially true, we cannot forget: Jesus is not just a man. Jesus is also God, the Only Begotten Son of the Father, and the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity. That means God Himself paid the price to save us; it is God who suffered and died for us not in His divinity, for God cannot die. So God was made incarnate God became human by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, so God could pay the price of our salvation in Jesus. This Prayer over the Offerings summarizes this awesome tenet of our faith: that we have been made worthy of so much - by Christ s Passion. We are a people of HOPE because of Christ and His sacrifice. What will you do this week in gratitude for all that God has done for you? Palm Sunday of the Passion of the Lord Prayer after Communion Nourished with these sacred gifts, we humbly beseech you, O Lord, that, just as through the death of your Son you have brought us to hope for what we believe, so by his Resurrection you may lead us to where you call. The Cup of Suffering. To equate Communion with the cup of suffering Jesus accepted in the Garden of Gethsemane is not something we normally think of. And yet this is what the Mass always sets before us. One of the most profound things receiving Holy Communion means is that we are willing to accept whatever suffering is necessary to conform our life to Christ s life - and our world to God s will. Perhaps we need to ask what the cost of our Communion might be this day. To have true Communion with the Lord, what must I change about myself about my values and my thoughts my hopes and my plans and my little part of the world? Will I accept what God's will is for me - as Jesus did? The Prayer after Communion returns to the central theme of this day: participating in the life of Christ now and in eternity. Will you be able to face death as Jesus did: without fear, and with total confidence in God s promises? With God s love and my prayers, Reverend Michael J. Kreder

3 ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL Once a year, Archbishop Myers asks each of us to make a sacrificial commitment to the Church of Newark so we will have the necessary resources to fund, for an entire year, the offices which provide direct services to parishes, including ours. To date, $109, has been pledged from 380 Saint Mary donors. In addition, a host of other programs and Human Services are provided which NO single parish could provide on its own. Our parish and the Archdiocese are ONE. Both need your sacrificial support. We are asking EACH FAMILY to a make a financial commitment to our AAA. Those donors who share a portion of what they have, are the first ones to benefit from their own sense of gratitude of God. Envelopes can be found in back of church. Stations begin at 7:30 p.m. Please sit in the 2 middle sections. Your friends and families are welcome to sit with you. GOOD FRIDAY - HOLY LAND COLLECTION Our help is needed now, as in the days of Saint Francis, to protect the Holy Places of the Holy Land. Even more important, our help is needed to protect the Holy Name of Our Lord in this troubled land, which he chose for His birth, sacrificial death and victorious resurrection. We protect more than the stones of ancient shrines from the ravages of time or armies or tourists. In an unbelieving world we express and protect the very idea of what it means to follow Christ. Your gift will give life to some and hope to others, lighting candles of faith in darkened shrines and lives, even becoming the very bread and wine of our daily Eucharist. The Annual Collection for the Shrines and people of the Holy Land will be taken up on Good Friday, April 6th during the Celebration of Christ s Passion and Death and during the Stations of the Cross. Thank you GOOD FRIDAY - CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S PASSION AND DEATH All special ministers of the Eucharist are strongly encouraged to bring the Eucharist to their homebound Communion calls after this Service. Since the Eucharist is not consecrated at this Service [it is consecrated the night before] all ministers should go to the Temporary Sacristy NO LATER THAN 2:45 p.m. to fill their pyx with the required number of hosts; the pyx should then be left on the tray in the Temporary Sacristy. The tray of pxys will be brought to the Altar during the Service; after Communion the ministers will be dismissed to bring Holy Communion to the Homebound. Since the sick and homebound share so intimately in the Lord s cross, they deserve to receive Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament on Good Friday; please make every effort to bring them the Gift of Our Eucharistic Lord on this most solemn day. BRING BELLS TO THE HOLY THURSDAY, EASTER VIGIL AND EASTER SUNDAY MASSES! Psalm 81:1 tells us to Ring out your joy to God our strength. All are invited to bring handbells [any bell will do] to Mass on Holy Thursday, the Easter Vigil and Easter Sunday. An ancient custom calls for bells to be rung during the Gloria, the church s great hymn of praise on both those nights to mark our entrance into the Sacred Triduum on Holy Thursday night and to end the readings from the Old Testament during the Easter Vigil s liturgy of the Word and prepare us to hear the Good news of the new Covenant sealed with the blood of the risen Christ! The ringing of bells were so well received in previous years that this year we are asking you to bring them to all the Easter Masses. So, bring bells to ring during the Gloria and Let us come before the Lord with joyful song. [Psalm 100:2] BLESSED EASTER WATER Because of the generosity of COLLINS CALHOUN FUNERAL HOME - [201] containers of Holy Water will be available at the Baptismal Font after all Easter Masses. Please be sure to stop by and take one home with you. Thank you for all you do for us!
