2 From the Pastor 19 th Sunday in Ordinary Time - A August 13, 2017 Some say the atrocities faced centuries ago by Christians are overly exaggerated. But as Saint Maximilian Kolbe shows: evil is still evil. For the barbarous crimes committed by Nazi Germany and modern day radical Islam are just as, if not more, repulsively heinous. Born January 8, 1894 and baptized Raymund in Poland, then occupied by the Russians who hanged his father, Julius, in 1914 as a traitor; his mother, Marianne, later became a nun. Like his father he joined the Polish militia, but in 1910 entered the Franciscans and was given the name Maximilian Kolbe. Ordained a Priest in 1918, he earned a doctorate in philosophy and one in theology. Skilled in printing and promoting pamphlets and periodicals, he spread the Faith and devotion to the Immaculate Virgin Mary, combatting the evil forces of his time. Arrested and imprisoned for doing so, he was released; but after resuming his anti-nazi publications and hiding 2,000 Jews at his monastery, his publishing house and monastery were shut down. In 1941 he was sent to Auschwitz and was martyred on August 14, 1941, at the age of 47. Here are his orations. Collect - Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr O God, who filled the Priest and Martyr Saint Maximilian Kolbe with a burning love for the Immaculate Virgin Mary and with zeal for souls and love of neighbor, graciously grant, through his intercession, that, striving for your glory by eagerly serving others, we may be conformed, even until death, to your Son. Through our Lord Jesus Christ and ever. Amen. TWO CROWNS. As a boy, he had a vision of the Virgin Mary who offered him two crowns with which he is often depicted: the white one symbolized purity, and the red one, martyrdom - and he promised to accept both. Providentially, he was cremated the day after his death: on Mary s Assumption. His love of neighbor, which his Collect extols, led to his execution. Depicted in Nazi prison garb with his prisoner #16670, he holds a Jewish prayer shawl with prisoner #5659: Francis Gajowniczek, a married man with young children, chosen to die with nine others as punishment and a deterrent after another prisoner escaped. When he begged for his life to care for his family, Father Maximilian volunteered to take his place. After two weeks of dehydration and starvation, Maximilian Kolbe was the last of the group to remain alive, so he was given a lethal injection. Saint Maximilian Kolbe is the patron saint of political prisoners and all inmates, drug addicts, families, and the pro-life movement. Prayer over the Offerings - Saint Maximilian Kolbe We present our oblations to you, O Lord, humbly praying that we may learn from the example of Saint Maximilian to offer our very lives to you. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. TO LIVE FOR OTHERS. Few are called to offer the ultimate sacrifice of their life for others, but all are called to imitate Saint Maximilian Kolbe s example of doing all we can to spread the Faith, despite opposition. Even the man whose place he took, who attended his canonization in 1982 and who died in 1995 at age 94, promoted the Faith - after being criticized by fellow inmates for causing them to lose their beloved Priest. Prayer after Communion - Saint Maximilian Kolbe We pray, O Lord, that, renewed by the Body and Blood of your Son, we may be inflamed with the same fire of charity that Saint Maximilian received from this holy banquet. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. RECEIVE EUCHARIST AT ANY COST! Even in prison, despite danger and difficulty, with smuggled bread and wine, Saint Maximilian Kolbe offered Mass for his fellow prisoners. How sad that so many have a cavalier attitude about fulfilling the weekly Mass obligation and excuse themselves for the lamest reasons. 4 NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: 1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a After fleeing from the revenge of the King of Israel, Elijah hid in a cave, but at the command of God, he went outside and stood on a mountain. There the Lord came to him, not in the wind nor in the earthquake, but in a tiny whispering sound. Second Reading: Romans 9:1-5 Paul is deeply pained because the Jews - in spite of everything that has been given to them - have rejected Christ. Gospel: Matthew 14:22-33 Matthew vividly recounts the event of Jesus walking on the water. When the disciples see this, they are terrified, and Jesus chastises them for their fear. Peter begs Christ to let him walk on the water; he is at first brave but begins to sink and loses faith, crying out, Lord save me! This workshop is intended to help parents, sponsors (godparents) and others to reflect on their own faith and their reasons for asking to have their child baptized. TENTATIVE Dates for Baptisms (Please do NOT make plans until the date is confirmed with the Parish Office) Sunday, August 27, 2017 Sunday, October 15, 2017 December 3, 2017 GODPARENT/SPONSOR REQUIREMENTS Canon (Church) law states a godparent/sponsor must: Be a Baptized and Confirmed Roman Catholic who attends weekly Mass and receives Eucharist Be at least 16 years of age (exceptions possible) Not be one of the parents Lead a moral life in keeping with Church teaching, and be a good Catholic role model. If married, be married per Church law Be a registered member of their own current parish from which they obtain an eligibility certificate We can only give eligibility certificates to those who are registered in our parish! Since only one Catholic godparent is required, a baptized member of another Christian church (but not Roman Catholic) may serve as a Christian Witness. Since godparents renew their baptismal promises during the Rite of Baptism, a non-baptized person cannot serve in this role.

5 RELIGIOUS FORMATION Sunday and Wednesday Sessions CLASSES WILL BEGIN IN SEPTEMBER: Sunday classes for Grades 1-8 begin on: September 10, :00 am 10:15 am Wednesday classes for Grades 1-6 begin on: September 13, :45 pm -5:00 pm (new start and end time) If you have not yet registered for religious formation classes, please contact: Mary Kay Benjamin, the Parish Catechetical leader at: Ext. 140 or If your child is entering FIRST Grade in September of 2017, it is time to register for FIRST Grade Religious Formation Classes. The family must be registered parishioners to enroll in the Religious Formation classes. CONFIRMATION SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM PARENTS OF CHILDREN ENTERING 7 TH OR 8 TH GRADE IN SEPTEMBER: The Church of Saint Mary Confirmation Preparation Program is a TWO-YEAR SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM. The 7 th grade will participate over two years in order to be better prepared when they receive the sacrament in 8 th grade. All parents of children entering 7 th or 8 th grade interested in having their child confirmed at the Church of Saint Mary, should contact Larry Boland at larry.boland@outlook.com NEED FOR CATECHISTS! Consider team-teaching with a friend! Our children are the future of the world. Growing in faith and love for God is so important. We currently need THREE (3) volunteer teacher for Wednesday Classes; 2017/18. 1 adult volunteer teacher for Grade 2, Grade 3 and Grade 6 Without teachers, we cannot offer classes. Cantors lead our hymns and liturgical singing at mass. This is NOT a big-time commitment. When possible, you will be assigned to lead the Mass you usually attend. Any rehearsal that is needed will be done around your schedule. In most cases - it can be done before mass starts. Please see Gerry DeMan at the organ after any Mass. SAINT MARY ADULT CHOIR The choir at Saint Mary welcomes all people who wish to be part of a fun group. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evening from 7:30pm-9:00pm in the parish center we sing at Mass every Sunday most often the 9:00am mass from September thru June. Every added voice makes a huge difference in our group. Please see Gerry DeMan at the church organ after any Mass for additional information. Every additional voice adds a lot to the choir, and makes a big difference in our music. IS GOD REMEMBERED IN YOUR WILL? While concern for our own needs and the needs of others may keep us from tithing a full 10% now, most should be able to reach this goal in their will.
