2 From the Pastor September 23, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus called the Twelve, and said to them, If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all. Taking a child, he placed it in the their midst, and putting his arms around it, he said to them, Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me; and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me. [Mark 9:35-37] To help open the treasures of the revised Roman Missal, I m giving a weekly reflection on the three theological deep and beautiful Mass orations of that day, gleaned from the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts. 25 th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Collect O God, who founded all the commands of your sacred Law upon love of you and of our neighbor, grant that, by keeping your precepts, we may merit to attain eternal life. Love God & Love Your Neighbor. If we want to comply with Jesus admonition to Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect, [Matthew 5:48] then we must love one another WITHOUT exception. Of course, when we love someone, that does not mean anything goes! We must have the so-called tough love that challenges people not to harm themselves or others. This is the kind of love God has for us, as evidenced in the Ten Commandments, and in the Church s divinely inspired disciplines, precepts and requirements, such as weekly, active participation in holy Mass and proper reception of Eucharist. What exactly is a precept? A precept is an order or command given before an event or mission to enable one to fulfill their mission or successfully deal with the event. No one can truly be a Christian if he or she does NOT love God and their neighbor; there is no way to follow the Lord or to live with justice in the world that is not founded on the absolute requirement of love! So God graces or gifts us with the primary game rule - that is, to love, and the grace to live by love - and, above all, the role model of Love Incarnate: Jesus Christ! 25 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Prayer over the Offerings Receive with favor, O Lord, we pray, the offerings of your people, that what they profess with devotion and faith may be theirs through these heavenly mysteries. Holy Mass Is the Greatest Love Fest. I certainly do not mean to be disrespectful or irreverent, but this Prayer over the Offerings implies that the holy Mass is, at its base, a love offering! It is, indeed, the greatest of all love-fests! For at holy Mass we offer our gifts to the Lord as a sign of our love. And then God, who cannot be outdone in generosity or in love, shows us once again what true love looks like, by giving His Love Incarnate, Jesus Christ, which He shares with us in Holy Communion! Although this oration begins by asking God to receive our offerings with favor, it is we who must prepare ourselves to RECEIVE - and then to USE - what God returns to us as the consecrated, grace-filled and transformed bread and wine which have become His Son s Body and Blood. As our loving Father, God provides all that His children need to be and who He calls them to be; we, in turn, must accept His gifts with devotion and faith. That means we must accept our duty to accept, use and share God s gifts [devotion] and believe that God s gifts have the power to transform us [faith.] 25 th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Prayer after Communion Graciously raise up, O Lord, those you renew with this Sacrament, that we may come to possess your redemption both in mystery and in the manner of our life. Loving Service. The Prayer after Communion reminds us that love is not simply a feeling; it is a decision and a commitmen to DO something. In Holy Communion we literally receive God s Love in sacramental form so we can become what we receive; then we must bring that love to all we meet, in all we do! The grace God gives us in the Eucharist is to be the foundation of a life lived in service to the Lord and others. In His great love for us, God - who knows we are likely to fall short in our quest to love as we are loved by God - offers two additional gifts that are mentioned in this oration: God wills to renew and raise us up. What comfort to know that, no matter how often we fail, God is willing to forgive us, give us another chance and remake and restore us in Christ! With God s love and my prayers, Reverend Michael J. Kreder

3 WHY CHILDREN S CHOIR It s that time of year again and children s calendars are filling up with a host of activities for the school year. Is it really possible to add one more thing to the list? Children s Choir is one of the most wonderful additions to any schedule and does not involve a huge time commitment. We meet for an hour a week (Fridays from 4:30 to 5:30pm in church) for rehearsal and sing on Sundays at the 10:30am Mass as well as special occasions such as Christmas Eve, Easter Sunday, and other Holy days. But what makes Children s Choir special? First, children are given the opportunity to make new friends, learn positive social and communication skills, learn the benefits of volunteering, build self confidence, and share their musical talents in an enjoyable environment. The choir performs concerts throughout the year and children are given the opportunity to sing at the Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark, a fun and inspiring experience for all involved. Second, the children are actively engaged in the liturgy, not passive participants of the congregation, but full participants in the Mass each week. This encourages a greater understanding and love for the Mass. Finally, I am often asked why a child should join our church choir if they are already in a chorus at school. Children s Choir is the one place children learn not only about music but also about their faith at the same time. Music is the vessel with which they learn about God s many mysteries and lessons and this you will not find anywhere else. What a great way to enhance a child s love for the Lord while making memories that will last a lifetime! Please me at andrea.covais@gmail.com for more information. Membership is open for children in grades 2 through 8. SAINT MARY HIGH SCHOOL Clothing Drive Saint Mary High School will hold a FALL CLOTHING DRIVE on Saturday, October 6th from 8:30 to noon in front of the High School located on the corner of Ames and Chestnut.
