2 From the Pastor October 2, th Sunday in Ordinary Time - C My next reflection on the 50 Saints with an Obligatory Memorial and full set of orations [Collect, Prayer over the Offerings and Prayer after Communion] is on Saint Francis of Assisi, whose Feast Day is October 4. Born in 1181 or 1182; he died on October 3, 1226; he was so popular that Pope Gregory IX canonized Saint Francis on July 16, just two years after his death! Why is Saint Francis portrayed with animals; why is the Annual Blessing of Animals held near his Feast Day; why is his statue often found in the gardens and flower beds of even non-catholics? Saint Francis composed a poem on the beauty of nature; it is paraphrased in the song Canticle of the Sun which is in our hymnal. Saint Francis is also revered in another hymn based on his writings, The Prayer of Saint Francis, aka Make Me a Channel of Your Peace. However, none of his orations even mention his role as an animal lover or peacemaker! Here are Saint Francis of Assisi s orations, which extol his primary attributes and example. Collect - Saint Francis of Assisi O God, by whose gift Saint Francis was conformed to Christ in poverty and humility, grant that, by walking in Francis footsteps, we may follow your Son, and, through joyful charity, come to be united with you. Through our Lord for ever and ever. Amen. POVERTY & HUMILITY. Born in Assisi, Italy, his mother baptized him Giovanni in honor of John the Baptist; when his father returned from a trip, he renamed him Francesco, hoping his son would, like himself, seek the finer French - [his name meant Frenchman ] and all of life s sinful pleasures. At first, his plan seemed to work; Francis partied, became a shrewd businessman, and joined the Crusades. Only after many years did Francis answer God s call to leave all things to preach the Gospel. In a highly charged, public spat with his father, he literally stripped off all his clothes, renounced his inheritance, and began his ministry. Ordained a Deacon against his will - but never a Priest - Saint Francis lived in poverty and humility - spreading the Gospel of love. Prayer over the Offerings - Saint Francis of Assisi As we bring you these offerings, O Lord, we pray that we may be rightly disposed for the celebration of the mystery of the Cross, which Saint Francis so ardently embraced. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. MYSTERY OF THE CROSS. Saint Francis was no stranger to the Cross: the symbol of redemptive suffering and death. Though he did not die a martyr s death, he embraced life s sorrows and sadness in ways that helped him appreciate the true nature of God s gifts on earth and His promise of eternal life in heaven. He suffered rejection and insult - not only from his father and others who saw his simple lifestyle as senseless; he endured mockery and fierce opposition from Church leaders and others whose corrupt, lazy, or heretical lifestyles he sought to change. As Saint Francis prayed before an ancient crucifix in the Church of San Damiano, he heard God s call to rebuild my Church. This is every Christian s duty: to do all we can to correct and improve the Church - physically, making sure she has all she needs for worship and service - and spiritually - making sure each Christian is all he or she can and should be! If we love something, we seek to improve it; never to fundamentally change it. Prayer after Communion - Saint Francis of Assisi Grant us, we pray, O Lord, through these holy gifts which we have received, that, imitating the charity and apostolic zeal of Saint Francis, we may experience the effects of your love and spread them everywhere for the salvation of all. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. FRANCISCAN CHARITY & APOSTOLIC ZEAL. As Saint Francis taught, all we are and all we have are gifts from God -to be shared with those in need. To honor Saint Francis, what will we do to better understand and promote Gospel values and hope, the love of nature, and the desperately needed gift of peace? Saint Francis of Assisi, pray for us! With God s love and my prayers, Reverend Michael J. Kreder, KHS

He asks why God does nothing to stop the violence and misery. God assures him tht a time will come when only the just and faithful will live. Second Reading: 2 Timothy 1:6-8, Paul writes to Timothy from prison and urges him to continue to spread the gospel without fear or shame. He also tells Timothy to draw upon the strength of the Holy Spirit to help him face the hardships he will encounter while preaching. Gospel: Luke 17:5-10 The disciples ask Jesus to increase their faith. Jesus replies that faith the size of a mustard seed could transplant a sycamore, indicating that a person either has faith, strong and complete, or none at all. May Gabriel, the messenger be at his side in his important task of delivering God s message to his people and Raphael be his constant companion. WE ARE LIVING STONES For electronic giving options, please visit: Please make checks payable to: We Are Living Stones The Archdiocese has asked each family to make a financial commitment to their WE ARE LIVING STONES Campaign by filling out an envelope in church. Know how grateful I am to those members of our parish who have an unbroken history of generosity to the parish and the Archdiocese. I believe these parishioners have come to understand what all of us should. Their need to give back a portion of the gifts God has given to each of us far exceeds the needs of any parish, diocese or cause, important as they are. These donors, those who share a portion of what they have, are the first ones to benefit from their own sense of gratitude of God MASSBOOK The MASSBOOK is now open the 2017! Masses can be reserved by coming to the Parish Center - located beneath the Church from 9:30am to 4pm.
