2 From e Pastor July 6, Sunday in Ordinary Time For e first time on a Sunday since March 2 [e last Sunday before Lent began on Ash Wednesday] e liturgical color is finally green! We had 4 weeks of Lenten purple and 1 dusty rose; Passion Sunday, Pentecost and last week s Solemnity of e Apostle-Martyrs Peter and Paul were red; and it was white or gold for e 7 Sundays of Easter and e Solemnities of e Most Holy Trinity and The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ or Corpus Christi. For trivia buffs, is year s configuration of ese days makes it e longest stretch of no green on a Sunday! However, as we Americans celebrate is 4 of July or Independence Day weekend, many proudly wear red, white and blue! Preface for Independence Day - A It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you anks, Lord, holy Faer, almighty and eternal God, rough Christ our Lord. He spoke to us a message of peace and taught us to live as broers and sisters. His message took form in e vision of our founding faers as ey fashioned a nation where we might live as one. His message lives on in our midst as our task for today and a promise for tomorrow. And so, wi hearts full of love, we join e angels today and every day of our lives, to sing your glory as we acclaim: America: Love Her or Leave Her. Years ago it was quite common to see variations of is saying on bumper stickers, billboards and e like. Akin to it was e very similar sentiment: USA, Right or Wrong. Many times ese mottos or axioms were placed alongside an image of our flag as a sign of national pride. Is it wrong for Christians - e future citizens of heaven - to be so early bound? Yes and no. As I will explain in next week s article, which is based on e oer Preface prescribed for our country s anniversary, people of good fai can, should - and perhaps even must - find pride and joy in eir enic customs, national heritage and societal backgrounds. Today I ll address why a blind allegiance to one s City, State or Country - or even one s Parish, Diocese or Church, can be problematic - but first let me emphatically state one ing. I am eternally grateful and deeply proud to be an American; while I enjoy visiting oer lands and nations, I never want to live elsewhere! Even If I m someday elected Pope, I d reign from e USA! [I needn t worry about at, however; while some were shocked I was accepted into a seminary, many more - myself included- were amazed I was advanced by a seminary into Holy Orders, but to e Papacy? No way!] Anyway As proud as I am to be an American, neier I nor America is all at we should be. And e only way e words of e patriotic hymn, America e Beautiful will ever come true: God mend y every flaw is if I and every oer American live by God s law. We must also assure at no American law contradicts God s law! I firmly believe our founding faers knew at unless we are one nation under God, we are doomed to fall. And while ey wanted no particular Church or Fai to control e government, ey never envisioned our nation to be devoid of religious values or independent of divine mandates, precepts or ideals. How sad - and angering - it is when people try to dismiss Godly ways wi eir gross misunderstanding of e words separation of Church and State. Those words we uttered in e hope of keeping e USA free from being run by any particular Fai - not freedom from God or Fai itself! Our Task for Today and a Promise for Tomorrow. These words, taken from today s Preface, remind us: we have work to do and at - alough it will never be fully accomplished in is world - we must always strive to keep America true to God s ways! So we cannot be silent or inactive when, in e name of diversity and being all-inclusive, our Christian values, Gospel ideals or traditional practices are omitted - which is a gross contradiction of being diverse and all-inclusive! Sadly is is e case in our public schools, in e media and entertainment world - and even in our laws! What will you do - out of love for America - so at rough you - God can mend our every flaw? Wi God s love and my prayers, Reverend Michael J. Kreder
