2 From e Pastor September 22, Sunday in Ordinary Time Saints Michael, Gabriel & Raphael, Archangels - September 29 The Feast of e Archangels, pre-empted when it falls on a Sunday, honors ree of e seven Archangels seen above. The Book of Revelation depicts Michael, God s Defender, in battle gear; he is e protector of Israel, e Church, e Pope and police; e Bible details his violent contest wi e fallen Archangel Lucifer. In e center is God s Messenger, Gabriel, delivering his most important message: God s invite to Mary to become His Incarnation Son s Moer. Raphael, on e right, is God s Healer; he is featured in e Old Testament Book of Tobit. Non-biblical sources give various names to e oer Archangels, like Uriel, Raguel, Sariel and Ramiel, about whom e Church teaches noing definitive, not even eir names! Nor does she know how Lucifer was replaced. Saints Michael, Gabriel & Raphael, Archangels - Collect O God, who dispose in marvelous order ministries bo angelic and human, graciously grant at our life on ear may be defended by ose who watch over us as ey minister perpetually to you in heaven. Angels: Beings Between Us And God. While e human person is e highest form of life on ear, it is arrogant and haughty for us to ink at ere is noing between us and God! In a few places e Bible notes at God made man a little less an e angels [Psalms 8:5; Hebrews 2:7] and it makes e radical statement at we will be [already are!] raised higher an e angels! [Ephesians 2:6-7; Colossians 3:1-4, Hebrews 1:14] However, we must do as e Angels do: we must offer our entire life in service to God s will! Angels are created wi free will; and like us, ey are called to use at freedom to put eir gifts and talents into service for God, raer an eir own selfish whims, desires and goals. And bo Angels and human beings are called to be God s presence, to extend God s hand, and to echo God s word into everyday life. Feast of e Archangels - Prayer over e Offerings We offer you a sacrifice of praise, O Lord, humbly entreating, at, as ese gifts are borne by e ministry of Angels into e presence of your majesty, so you may receive em favorably and make em profitable for our salvation. Angels: Servants of e Lord. Angels have a special role in divine worship: e sacred liturgy. At Mass we join e Angels as ey sing e eternal hymn of God s glory, e Sanctus or Holy, Holy. In our most solemn prayers we even give a shout-out to e Archangels. In e venerable Roman Canon or Eucharistic Prayer I, e Priest bows to say: In humble prayer we ask you, almighty God: command at ese gifts be borne by e hands of your holy Angel to your altar on high in e sight of your divine majesty, What an honor it is for at Angel who is called by God to carry our sacrificial gifts from e early altar around which we have gaered and into God s presence in heaven! Feast of e Archangels - Prayer after Communion Having been nourished wi heavenly Bread, we beseech you humbly, O Lord, at, drawing from it new streng, under e faiful protection of your Angels, we may advance boldly along e way of salvation. Heavenly Protectors. Three times an Angel appeared to Saint Joseph in a dream: 1] to allay his fears about taking Mary, already wi child, as his wife [Matew 1:20-21]; 2] to flee wi Mary and Jesus to Egypt [2:13]; 3] and to return home [2:19-20]. The Bible does not say who is Angel was, but Sacred Tradition says it was Gabriel. Nor do we know which Angel strengened Jesus in e Garden of Gesemane [Luke 22:43]; since Christ was at war wi Satan, I presume it was Michael. Not at God needs help from His creatures, but in His human nature, Jesus needed it - just as we do. As we ll see in next week s article on e Guardian Angels, God gives each one of us all e heavenly help we need to face early struggles! Wi God s love and my prayers, Reverend Michael J. Kreder
