2 From the Pastor October 21, th Sunday in Ordinary Time Jesus said, Whoever wishes to be great among you will be your servant; whoever wishes to be first among you will be the slave of all. For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many. [Mark 10:43-45] To help open the treasures of the revised Roman Missal, I m giving a weekly reflection on the three theological deep and beautiful Mass orations of that day, gleaned from the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts. 29 th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Collect Almighty ever-living God, grant that we may always conform our will to yours and serve your majesty in sincerity of heart. God Is My Co-Pilot - But God Calls the Shots. As the bumper sticker, God is my Co-Pilot suggests, we should do nothing without God. And as this weekend s first oration reminds us: we must let God direct, empower and sustain us. We must truly mean it when we pray: Thy will be done! And then, as this Collect says, we must then actually DO God s will - by offering loving service to the Lord as we serve the God we cannot see who is present in our brothers and sisters especially those in need. Today s Gospel perfectly echoes this Collect, for in it Jesus, our great Role Model and Teacher, calls us to serve as He served. The Gospel on Holy Thursday night tells how our Lord and Master knelt to wash His disciples feet - and then commanded us to follow His example. Later that same night, in His Agony in the Garden, He asked His Father to let the chalice of suffering pass Him by, but then He prayed, Not my will, but Thy will be done! [Cf. Luke 22:42b] With the strength of the holy food He gave to us that very same night: the gift of His Body and Blood in the Eucharist, we also find the strength to accept the Father s will, even as we also pray to be excused from its often harsh and mysterious demands! 29 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Prayer over the Offerings Grant us, Lord, we pray, a sincere respect for your gifts, that, through the purifying action of your grace, we may be cleansed by the very mysteries we serve. Distractions, Distractions, Distractions! We are constantly bombarded with advertisements of all the things we MUST have for a happy and fulfilling life: buy these, travel here, try this, own that, taste what we make. Imagine if we gave as much of our attention and time to God s ways, to the divine products the Church alone can offer, and to the things that endure forever as we do to the Madison Avenue sellers and other promoters of the passing things of this world? This Prayer over the Offerings asks that we be given God's love, support and freedom so that, in freedom and with faith, we can offer our lives to Him and to others in loving service. But as Jesus noted: No one can serve two masters. [Matthew 6:24] Since we are faced with so many worldly distractions, we need a good dose of God s grace BEFORE we even get started, so we can get on - and stay on - the righ track. If we remain focused on Jesus, who comes to us each time we receive Holy Communion, we will be purified and cleansed of all that can distract us from our heavenly goal. 29 th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Prayer after Communion Grant, O Lord, we pray, that, benefiting from participation in heavenly things, we may be helped by what you give in this present age and prepared for the gifts that are eternal. Gifts For The Here And Now And For Eternity. To help us serve the Lord directly and through others, and to do so without [or at least with fewer] distractions this oration complements the previous two by reminding us: God makes available to us loads of sacramental help from on high! For the Sacraments use natural things to impart God s supernatural grace, and physical realities to show God s unseen presence; they convey in earthly form the assistance, direction and sustenance needed to get to heaven! The Sacraments also give us a taste of the worldto-come even now as penitents are forgiven, the sick are anointed and fortified, the weak are strengthened by Christ s Real Presence and His Spirit, our lifestyle is made holy through Holy Orders and Matrimony, and as God incorporates us into His Church through Baptism! With God s love and my prayers, Reverend Michael J. Kreder

6 Pastor s Update October 21, 2012 Election Day Eucharistic Adoration. On November 6, the Blessed Sacrament will be reposed on the DAILY MASS CHAPEL Altar from the end of the 8:30 AM Mass until Evening Prayer at 8 PM. All are invited, requested, strongly encouraged to make a visit to pray before voting. Many issues will be determined by our choice: Supreme Court justices, laws and policies that will affect the life of the unborn, the sick and dying, poor and needy, illegal aliens, the unemployed and underemployed, those who rightly and honestly rely on benefits they paid into and deserve, and those who abuse the system and demand to be cared for without offering anything in return, etc. Without God s help, we could never do the right thing that will bring peace and justice, prosperity and security, ethical values and biblical truths to our beloved United States of America. So pray and vote! A sign-up sheet may be found in the chapel and narthex; there are 5 lines for each of the ½ hour time slots. So that the Blessed Sacrament is never left unattended, please commit to at least one ½ time slot. Can you not watch with me for one hour? [Cf. Matthew 26:40] The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops website offers a wealth of information on liturgy and worship, Church teaching and doctrine, and current events. Log on or go directly to their response to the erroneous statements made about health care regulations and the Church/other religious groups in the recent Vice Presidential candidate debate log on: GYMNASIUM ENTRANCE PROJECT. We postponed last week s presentation to the Borough of Rutherford s Board of Adjustment because our architect was unavailable. As yet, no new date is scheduled for [hopefully] Borough approval of the variances needed for our project. The front of the gym is one of the last eyesores on our Parish campus; we hope to put a new brick front and extend the area out further to provide needed office space. I will keep you posted on its progress; I need as many of you as possible to attend the board meeting when we get our new date for a respectful storming of the Bastille. Rev. Michael J. Kreder, pastor CAN YOU HELP? A second grade Catechist is needed! Our Second grade catechist, Mrs. Vicky MacFadyen, has just been diagnosed with a serious illness and will not be returning to our Religious Formation program.
