2 From the Pastor October 23, th Sunday in Ordinary Time - C My next reflection on the 50 Saints with an Obligatory Memorial or Feast and full set of orations [Collect, Prayer over the Offerings and Prayer after Communion] is on Saints Simon & Jude, Apostles, honored on October 28. All the Bible tells us about Saint Simon is his name; legend says he was cut in two, so he is depicted with a saw! He is called the Zealot or Canaanite to differentiate him from Simon Peter, the Prince of the Apostles. His portrayal as a war-mongering radical militant is not supported by biblical evidence. We know far more about Saint Jude Thaddeus, who shares a Feast Day with Saint Simon since they preached as a pair. Saint Jude s surname Thaddeus is used to differentiate him from the betrayer, Judas Iscariot. His symbol is a pole, as he was beaten to death; a tongue of fire atop his head, since he received the Holy Spirit on Pentecost; and a medallion of Jesus, since he cured a king by showing him an image of Jesus. Here are their orations - but we know so little about Saint Simon, all my reflections are about Saint Jude. Collect - Saints Simon & Jude, Apostles O God, who by the blessed Apostles have brought us to acknowledge your name, graciously grant, through the intercession of Saints Simon and Jude, that the Church may constantly grow by increase of the peoples who believe in you. Through our Lord for ever and ever. Amen. HELPERS IN HEAVEN. We have scant information about most Apostles, but all that truly matters is that Jesus knew them and called them to govern, shepherd and intercede for His Church. We do not know how Saint Simon fulfilled this role, but we know that - at the Last Supper - Saint Jude asked Jesus why He revealed Himself only to the disciples, and not to everyone; Jesus replied: Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our dwelling with him. [John 14:23] This Collect prays that we accept the limited ways Jesus chooses to come to us: through Word and Sacrament, and through the unworthy people He calls to be Bishops, Priests and Deacons, Religious Sisters and Brothers, and Lay Ministers. Prayer over the Offerings - Saints Simon & Jude As we venerate the perpetual glory of the holy Apostles Simon and Jude, O Lord, we ask that you receive our prayers and lead us to worthy celebration of the sacred mysteries. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. NEVER GIVE UP. It seems Saint Jude became the Patron Saint of Impossible Causes from his Letter or Epistle, one of the Bible s smallest books! In it, Saint Jude urges Christians to persevere, despite all setbacks or challenges, defeats or disasters. By doing so, we become more worthy to celebrate the ultimate victory: Christ s victory over sin and death, made present to us through the sacred mysteries. Prayer after Communion - Saints Simon & Jude Having received this Sacrament, O Lord, we humbly implore you in the Holy Spirit, that what we do to honor the glorious passion of the Apostles Simon and Jude may keep us ever in your love. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. ONE OF ST. JUDE S GREATEST DEVOTEES. In the 1940 s, a stagehand told an actor, whose career seemed hopeless, to entrust his dismal cause to Saint Jude, whose intercession had cured the stagehand s wife of cancer. So Danny Thomas, who never stooped to the crude, crass antics of his contemporaries [which are tame compared to today s vile, vulgar routines], enlisted Saint Jude s help - and he became a successful actor. However, he forgot about Saint Jude until while - at the 6:00 AM Sunday Mass [after very late Saturday night shows!] he found a novena in a pew for the lost Apostle. Danny Thomas renewed his devotion to Saint Jude by supporting the St. Jude Children s Research Hospital and the rest is history! Do we generously give thanks for our answered prayers? Saints Simon & Jude, pray for us! With God s love and my prayers, Very Reverend Michael J. Kreder, V.F. KHS

4 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Sirach 35:12-14, God is just and does not show favoritism, but hears the prayers of everyone. Anyone who serves God, no matter how lowly his position here on earth, will be heard and answered. Second Reading: 2 Timothy 4:6-8, Paul writes to Timothy that he thinks his mission is near the end, and he is glad his faith is still strong. Paul hopes that all nations will hear the gospel. But, if he is executed as he anticipates, he is sure he will live forever in heaven. Gospel: Luke 18:9-14 Jesus tells a parable about a Pharisee who went to the temple, and offered up a prayer of thanks because he was not a sinner like the tax collector who was also there to pray. The tax collector was far more humble, acknowledging his sins, and asking forgiveness for them. Jesus said the tax collector's prayer would be heard because, "Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, while he who humbles himself will be exalted." 2000 Bon Venture Services, Inc.
