2 From the Pastor July 8, th Sunday in Ordinary Time A thorn in the flesh was given to me three times I begged the Lord that it might leave me, but he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness. So I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions and constraints for the sake of Christ; for when I am weak, then I am strong." [See 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10] To help open the treasures of the revised Roman Missal, each week I m giving a reflection on the three Mass orations of that day, gleaned from the book Essential Presidential Prayers and Texts. I m truly amazed at the theological depth and beauty of these prayers; I hope you are, too! 14 th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Collect O God, who in the abasement of your Son have raised up a fallen world, fill your faithful with holy joy, for on those you have rescued from slavery to sin you bestow eternal gladness. Spiritual Poverty. The word abasement comes from the Latin humilitas which implies much more than simply being humble. While Jesus did not have much of what we often consider riches: money and luxuries, possessions and position, Jesus did not want for what He truly needed. This Collect refers to His abasement or process by which Christ shared ALL He had for our salvation: His time and energy, His career and personal life, His Flesh and Blood; in a word, Christ offered His entire LIFE for us! While this is the theme of every Mass, this prayer notes one particular response we should have for all that God, in Christ, has done for us. We must not also share all we have to continue Christ s mission - and gratefully accept and use all God provides for us; we must be filled with holy joy. Since we are no longer in slavery to sin, we must throw off the shackles that chain us to this world! And once we empty our hands and hearts, heads and plans of the things of this world, we are in the best position to accept and use all that God wills to bestow on us so that we can share His joy or enjoy all that God knows will truly make us happy and fulfilled. 14 th Sunday in Ordinary Time Prayer over the Offerings May this oblation dedicated to your name purify us, O Lord, and day by day bring our conduct closer to the life of heaven. This Oblation Dedicated to God s Name. This oration reminds me of something many a parent has chided a child to remember, Don t you talk to me like I m just one of your friends! Do we call our earthly parents by their first name or treat them as if we re equals [and expect to live to tell the story?] Not that we need to cower or be filled with dreadful fear before the Lord but respect, reverence and awe are required. So in this Prayer over the Offerings, we first ask God to purify us so we can be in His Presence and dare to speak to Him. Then we ask the Lord to help us bring our conduct on earth into totally conformity with the life of heaven. For by participating in these mysteries that have been granted to us from heaven, we can bring our world closer to God s plan for His creation! And one of the key ways God helps us to transform ourselves and our world is through the Eucharist! 14 th Sunday in Ordinary Time - Prayer after Communion Grant, we pray, O Lord, that, having been replenished by such great gifts, we may gain the prize of salvation and never cease to praise you. The Divine Filling Station. We all know what happens if we fail to fill up our car with gas, or forget to put our cell phone in its charger, or allow the funds in our checking account to fall below the required minimum balance. To paraphrase Jesus in Matthew 16:3, if we understand how earthly things work, why can t we understand the way heavenly things work? For just as all physical things need to be replenished with whatever gives the life or energy, power or potency, so do all spiritual things! No wonder some refer to the Church and to its Sacraments as a Divine Filling Station! In the holy Mass we are replenished by God s Word in the Liturgy of the Word and with Divine Grace and the very presence of the Lord in the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Our minds and hearts, our bodies and our souls, are gifted with these great gifts that properly position us to win the prize of salvation! Once again, I ask: how could anyone ever miss a weekly Mass, since it offers us so much in so little time? With God s love and my prayers, Reverend Michael J. Kreder

3 PRAY FOR OUR MILITARY Continue to pray for all the brave men and women who are defending our country. Keep them safe from all attacks and danger. Give them wisdom and strength in battle, help them to stay spiritually, physically, mentally and emotionally strong and bring them safely home to their families. REMEMBER YOUR PARISH Some people wait until the end of summer to put in a catchup envelope for the Sundays they might have been away. The Way of Stewardship is NOT to catch up after everything has been used for vacation but to give from the first fruits. Why not consider catching up before you leave for vacation as an act of gratitude to God for all you have been given. BAPTISMS If you are an expectant parent thinking about your child's baptism, why not consider this! We are looking for 2 babies approximately 3 months of age or younger to be baptized during Mass in October - exact weekend not yet determined. The babies will be baptized by full immersion by Father Mike. If interested, call the Parish Office. BIBLE GROUP "Would you like to know your Catholic faith better? Come and see. Our Bible Group will meet every Tuesday evening at 7:30 p.m. We have a small Bible based prayer, study and discussion group in a private home in Rutherford. Call (201) "

4 SECOND COLLECTION ARCHDIOCESAN MISSIONARY COOPERATION PLAN It is through the Archdiocesan Missionary Cooperation plan the people of our Archdiocese reach out in prayer and sacrifice to the Church in mission lands. Many missionary dioceses and mission - sending Religious Communities will receive desperately needed help because of it. This weekend, The Dominican Friars of the Province of St. Joseph of New York will speak. It is our prayer that the people of our parish will respond generously to the Mission Appeal and that our contributions to the cause of Christ will bring the blessings of the Almighty upon our parish, priests, religious and people FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Ezekiel 2:2-5 Ezekiel is moved to respond to the call of God and to accentuate his teaching with a direct reference to the Word of God. Second Reading: II Corinthians 12:7-10 Paul had questioned the value of his suffering, and God replied, My grace is enough for you, for strength is made perfect in weakness. Paul then realized that although he was weak against persecution, he was strong in faith. Gospel: Mark 6:1-6 Jesus could do little for those in his own part of the country, for their lack of faith in him was so great. Therefore, he spent much of his time teaching in neighboring villages instead Bon Venture Services, Inc. 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday, July 8, 2012 Ez 2:2-5; 2 Cor 12:7-10; Mk 6:1-6a Monday, July 9, 2012 Hos 2:16, 17b-18, 21-22; Mt 9:18-26 Tuesday, July 10, 2012 Hos 8:4-7, 11-13; Mt 9:32-38 Wednesday, July 11, 2012 Hos 10:1-3, 7-8, 12; Mt 10:1-7 Thursday, July 12, 2012 Hos 11:1-4, 8c-9; Mt 10:7-15 Friday, July 13, 2012 Hos 14:2-10; Mt 10:16-23 Saturday, July 14, 2012 Is 6:1-8; Mt 10:24-33 Children's Liturgy of the Word Summer Schedule Change. REPORTING OF SEXUAL ABUSE The Archdiocese takes very seriously any and all allegations of sexual misconduct by members of the clergy, Religious and lay staff of the Archdiocese. We encourage anyone with knowledge of an act of sexual misconduct to inform us immediately so that we may take appropriate action to protect others and provide support to victims of sexual abuse. Individuals who wish to report an allegation of sexual misconduct may do so by calling the Archdiocesan Office of Child and Youth Protection at [201] REGISTRATIONS! Come Meet Mr. Corso, principal! Saint Mary High School continues throughout the summer with guided tours of the facility and registrations for the 2012/2013 school year. 5 Only when human life is valued and cherished will the safety and well-being of every person and family flourish. MATCHING GIFT PROGRAM Many business are matching gift corporations. A list is available in the Parish Office if you are unsure if your company is part of the program. If you work for one of the participating companies, your gift could be worth twice as much by having it matched by your corporation. A simple form can be obtained by your company and passed on to us. May the Lord, who can never be outdone in generosity, bless you for your goodness! STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Each year, people throughout the world make New Year s resolutions. For many they are short lived and quickly forgotten. At our Baptism and Confirmation, we make New Life resolutions. Our Baptismal promises are lifelong commitments to Jesus and the Church. We recognize that all that we possess comes from God. We are God s stewards - we have been empowered to manage the abundant gifts that we have received. As good stewards it is our responsibility to give back a portion of the time, talent, and treasure we receive from our generous and loving God. Let us recommit ourselves to the Lord by taking the time to plan and make stewardship of time and talent part of our lifestyle and stewardship of treasure part of our budget. Everyone must give according to what he has inwardly decided; not sadly, not grudgingly, for God loves a cheerful giver. {2 Cor. 9:7} RELIGIOUS FORMATION REGISTRATION is ON-GOING for our FALL CLASSES. Parents of children entering grades 1 through 8 can register by downloading a form from our parish website: or stopping by the Parish Office.
