2 FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 31, 2019 Procession into the Church/Praise and Worship Ministry of the Word of God The Acclamation (Stand) Bless the Lord who forgives all our sins. His mercy endures forever. The Decalogue (Stand) God spoke these words and said: I am the Lord your God, you shall have no other gods but me. You shall not make for yourself any image or likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the waters under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or worship them. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain. Remember the Sabbath day and keep it holy. Honor your father and your mother. 2

3 You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet. Lord, have mercy upon us, give us grace to keep these laws, and write them upon our hearts. The Confession and Absolution of Sin Let us humbly confess our sins to Almighty God. Silence (Kneel) & Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Gracious Father, whose blessed Son Jesus Christ came down from heaven to be the true bread which gives life to the world: Evermore give us this bread, that he may live in us, and we in him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. The Lessons Old Testament (Sit) Joshua 5:1, 9-12 Reader A reading from Joshua. 1 As soon as all the kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan to the west, and all the kings of the Canaanites who were by the sea, heard that the Lord had dried up the waters of the Jordan for the people of Israel until they had crossed over, their hearts melted and there was no longer any spirit in them because of the people of Israel. 9 And the Lord said to Joshua, Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you. And so the name of that place is called Gilgal to this day. 10 While the people of Israel were encamped at Gilgal, they kept the Passover on the fourteenth day of the month in the evening on the plains of Jericho. 11 And the day after the Passover, on that very day, they ate of the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. 12 And the manna ceased the day after they ate of the produce of the land. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. 18 this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation. 20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, God making his appeal through us. And he divided his property between them. 13 Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living. 14 And when he had spent everything, a severe famine arose in that country, and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to one of the citizens of that country, who sent him into his fields to feed pigs. 16 And he was longing to be fed with the pods that the pigs ate, and no one gave him anything. 17 But when he came to himself, he said, How many of my father's hired servants have more than enough bread, but I perish here with hunger! 18 I will arise and go to my father, and I will say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son. Treat me as one of your hired servants. 20 And he arose and came to his father. But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and felt compassion, and ran and embraced him and kissed him. 21 And the son said to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son. 22 But the father said to his servants, Bring quickly the best robe, and put it on him, and put a ring on his hand, and shoes on his feet. 23 And bring the fattened calf and kill it, and let us eat and celebrate. 24 For this my son was dead, and is alive again; he was lost, and is found. And they began to celebrate. 25 Now his older son was in the field, and as he came and drew near to the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 And he called one of the servants and asked what these things meant. 27 And he said to him, Your brother has come, and your father has killed the fattened calf, because he has received him back safe and sound. 28 But he was angry and refused to go in. His father came out and entreated him, 29 but he answered his father, Look, these many years I have served you, and I never disobeyed your command, yet you never gave me a young goat, that I might celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours 7

8 came, who has devoured your property with prostitutes, you killed the fattened calf for him! 31 And he said to him, Son, you are always with me, and all that is mine is yours. 32 It was fitting to celebrate and be glad, for this your brother was dead, and is alive; he was lost, and is found. Please join us as we all profess our faith. Do you believe in God the Father? I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. 8

9 Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers? I will with God s help. Will you persevere in resisting evil, and whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord? I will with God s help. Will you proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ? I will with God s help. Will you love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength? I will with God s help. Will you love your neighbor as yourself? I will with God s help. It is right to give him thanks and praise. It is right, our duty and our joy, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. You bid your faithful people cleanse their hearts, and prepare with joy for the Paschal feast; that, fervent in prayer and in works of mercy, and renewed by your Word and Sacraments, they may come to the fullness of grace which you have prepared for those who love you. 14 The Fraction Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us Therefore let us keep the feast. The gifts of God for the people of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. Fraction Anthem Baptized Christians are invited to communion. Please extend both hands to receive the bread and assist the server by guiding the chalice to your lips. If you do not desire the cup, leave the bread in your hand. The server will dip it in the wine and return it to you. For those not receiving communion, you are welcome to come for a blessing by crossing your arms over your heart as you come before the priest. Gluten-free wafers are available upon request. PRAYER MINISTRY: After receiving communion, Prayer Teams are available through the doors to the right of the altar. 16 Bishop s Well Lenten Project We are continuing to collect money for the Bishop s Well supported by Bishop Atwood and Ekklesia. The Bishop s Well is a ministry that saves lives by helping to provide clean, safe water. We can participate in the Save Change to Save Lives collection through Easter Sunday, April 21 st by bringing loose change for the plastic container available in the narthex or simply including a donation with your regular contribution through your giving envelopes or Online Giving ( Other and add in Water ). Thank you so much for your help! Lenten Teaching Series on the Daniel Plan Our Lenten Teaching Series on The Daniel Plan continues, we are using our Home Groups as the vehicle. This plan, developed by Rick Warren and Saddleback Church, is about living the kind of lifestyle God intends for us, rededicating our bodies to God. Through a series of 6 videos, followed by discussion and prayer, our groups will cover Faith, Food, Fitness, Focus, Friends, and Living the Lifestyle. Every participant receives a free Study Guide (personal workbook). We hope each of our TAC family members will take this opportunity to learn together and build relationships. You may contact the church office to learn more or to find out about the leadership, location, and meeting times of our groups. Lenten Soup & Bread Meal Today, we will meet after worship in the parish hall for a simple meal of soup and bread as we fellowship together for Lent. Food will be provided by various Home Groups.
