1 St Paul s Cathedral Together transforming our City and Diocese Sung Evening Prayer Commemorating the 500 th Anniversary of the Reformation: Sunday 29 October, pm WELCOME Welcome to St Paul s Cathedral, the home for worshippers from more than two dozen nations, the seat of the Anglican Primate of Australia and the home church for Anglicans in Melbourne and Victoria. Whether you belong to the Anglican or Uniting Church or are from another Christian Church or faith tradition, you are most welcome to take part in tonight s service. We worship on the traditional lands of the Kulin nation and we acknowledge and pay our respect to their elders past and present and to Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders with us today. Parts of this evening s service will be sung by the Ntaria Choir from the Northern Territory, directed by David Roennfeldt a very warm welcome to the choir members and their guests. Please join us in saying those parts of the service printed in bold type. Please ensure that mobile phones and other devices are switched off. INTRODUCING THE NTARIA CHOIR Our community is 125 km west of Alice Springs. It has two names: Ntaria, and Hermannsburg. It was settled in 1877 by German missionaries, and they soon established a bilingual school. Singing was a popular subject. Parts were taught to community members by the teacher's wife in the 1920s. Since then there have been a variety of choirs: adult, youth, and children's. In the last 6 years our choir has contributed members to the Central Australian Aboriginal Women's Choir. In an era when our language is being lost by younger generations, our choir sings in the mother tongue language as much as possible: Western Arrarnta. Please join in singing with us in our language, as indicated in this evening's service.

Please be seated for THE READING Romans 3 : Canon Rick Tudor A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Romans: 19 Now we know that whatever the law says, it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For no human being will be justified in his sight by deeds prescribed by the law, for through the law comes the knowledge of sin. 21 But now, irrespective of law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by the law and the prophets, 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction, 23 since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; 24 they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a sacrifice of atonement by his blood, effective through faith. He did this to show his righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over the sins previously committed; 26 it was to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of boasting? It is excluded. By what law? By that of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. Here ends the second lesson.
