1 Valentine Mattins 8 February 2015 This service follows the traditional order of Choral Mattins, but the music and readings have been specially chosen to reflect the theme of love and marriage. During this service, we will give thanks for the gift of marriage, and especially for all those who have been married here at St Mary s. You are invited to stay for refreshments at the back of church after this service.

2 Opening Responses Please stand when the choir and clergy enter, then sit as the choir sing the introit, Set me as a seal upon thine heart, by William Walton. These words, from the Song of Songs, are one of most popular parts of the Bible read at weddings. Set me as a seal upon thine heart, as a seal upon thine arm: for love is strong as death; Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it. The choir sings the opening responses. O Lord, open thou our lips and our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. The first reading is from the Song of Songs My beloved speaks and says to me: The First Lesson Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away; for now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come, and the voice of the turtle-dove is heard in our land. The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom; they give forth fragrance. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away. Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm; for love is strong as death, passion fierce as the grave. Its flashes are flashes of fire, a raging flame. Many waters cannot quench love, neither can floods drown it. If one offered for love all the wealth of one s house, it would be utterly scorned. Here ends the first lesson. 3

A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians The Second Lesson Love is patient; love is kind; love is not envious or boastful or arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. But as for prophecies, they will come to an end; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will come to an end. For we know only in part, and we prophesy only in part; but when the complete comes, the partial will come to an end. When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child; when I became an adult, I put an end to childish ways. For now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love. Here ends the second lesson. 4

Sermon Prayers Hymn After the Vicar gives any notices, he will anounce the final hymn, during which a collection is taken to support the work of the church. St Mary s relies on donations from all who are able to support our upkeep and ministry. If you are able to fill in a Gift Aid envelope, it will make your gift worth more to us. Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down, fix in us thy humble dwelling, all thy faithful mercies crown. 9 Sunday Services at St Mary s Every Sunday there is a quiet, said service of Holy Communion at 8am. Also every Sunday, there is a Sung Eucharist at 9:30am. This service has hymns, a sermon, and Holy Communion and it s followed by coffee in the hall. In term time there is children s hour for young children during the service. At 11am, we have a different service each week. On the first Sunday of the month it s Praise@11, especially for primary-school aged children but enjoyed by all ages. On the second Sunday of the month there s Choral Mattins, just like the service today. On the third Sunday Toddle Up! is a short and very informal service especially for toddlers and their families. And on the fourth Sunday, we have a sung service of Morning Prayer, like today s service, with Holy Baptisms celebrated at this time. Once a month, we hold Choral Evensong at 5:30pm. There are also other services on weekdays and special occasions. Dates for the diary After next Sunday s Toddle Up! service especially for toddlers and families there will be lunch in the church hall, speak to the Vicar for more details. Ash Wednesday 18 February: 12noon Holy Communion & 8pm Sung Eucharist for the beginning of Lent. Tuesdays from 24 February our Lent discussion group is Debates & Dilemmas: Contemporary Moral Issues. In the parish room at the back of church 7:30 for 8pm, led by the Revd Dr Patrick Miller. All welcome. Saturday 14 March: 7:30pm Organ Recital by Jonathan Holmes Bach s greatest hits. 10 CHILDREN S ACTIVITIES Monthly from the Vicar. The Vicar sends out a regular once or twice a month with full details of all our children s events and activities. To sign up to receive the , visit Toddle Up! Toddlers and their families are invited to a short, fun, very informal service in church aimed at the youngest on the 3 rd Sunday of the month. The next one is at 11 o clock on 15 February (next Sunday). Do come along, you will be most welcome. Babes in arms also enjoy the service! Toddler Groups: St Mary s Toddler Groups are held on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays. There is no waiting list at present. Why not join other parents and carers at these fun occasions? For more information please contact Jenny on Children s Hour: Do you have children aged between 3 and 9? Do they enjoy singing, story time, and activities? Then why not try St Mary s Children s Hour? Held on Sunday mornings during term time in the Church Hall between am. Parents and carers are welcome to stay and join in if they wish. Fun Day Wednesdays: Every Wednesday in term time, 3:30-4:30pm. Craft, activities, and games for children to dip in and out of. For children aged 5-11 (older and younger welcome too); parents/carers please stay and have a drink and a chat. 1 per session, no need to book.
