Adults are baptized and confirmed at the Easter Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation. THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Since Catholic marriage requires a time of preparation, arrangements should begin at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding to allow for the Marriage Preparation Program and Natural Family Planning (NFP). Registered, participating and contributing parishioners may contact the parish office to begin the process. PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK If you are planning to enter the hospital for surgery, experiencing a prolonged or serious illness, or are very weak due to advancement of age, call the parish office to arrange for the sacraments of reconciliation, communion and anointing at home, also available every Saturday morning at 9:00 AM Mass. Communal anointing of the sick is celebrated at Mass each April and October. Notify us or the Catholic chaplain at Good Samaritan, Helen Hayes and Nyack of any hospitalization so that we may be of assistance. Be sure to tell the admitting office that you are a Catholic patient and a member of St. Gregory Barbarigo parish. PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL is open all day and night for Eucharistic adoration and is located at the south end of the campus on Cinder Road in front of the parish house. Parishioners and friends are encouraged to become adorers or to stop in and spend some time in quiet prayer with the Lord. WELCOME The St. Gregory Barbarigo faith community warmly welcomes you. Please introduce yourself to Father LaMorte as you leave church so that, on behalf of the entire community we may greet you. You may register at the parish office and pick up an informational packet. Kindly notify us of any change of address. MISSION STATEMENT St. Gregory Barbarigo parish is a Christian community of disciples in the Roman Catholic tradition, called by Jesus, united in Eucharistic worship and growing in faith, hope and love. Nourished through the sacraments and strengthened by God s transforming love, we are empowered to know the gospel message and to witness it to others. As Christian stewards, we are thankful for God s many gifts and we commit ourselves to share our time, talent and treasure in Christ-like service within our parish community and beyond. We seek God s blessing and guidance to be faithful to this mission.

3 D HOLY COMMUNION AND THE DISABLED If you have difficulty walking, please sit in the front pew on the Holy Family side when coming to church. A minister will bring the Eucharistic host right to you at your place so that you are the first to receive Communion. We will reserve the area of chairs nearest the sacristy door for those who come in wheelchairs. If you would like, the chalice of Precious Blood will also be offered to you after everyone has received. We are very happy to do this for you. OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD oes Roseanne Barr and other people in the news like former president Bill Clinton or even the previously unknown 20-year-old Philadelphia woman Emily Weinman who faces several charges including two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest following the incident at the beach in Wildwood, NJ need to learn the act of contrition? I have been thinking about this recently and I am glad that someone is putting this out there. Nobody knows how to apologize or express contrition anymore. So here is some welcome wisdom from a Catholic upbringing, via Margaret Renklin of the New York Times. One of the most useful things Catholic school taught me is the fundamental structure of apology. We are all born with a powerful inclination for fault and failure. We lie. We treat others unkindly. We nurture wrongheaded notions because they make us feel a little bit better about our imperfect selves. Among the higher profile cases, there is plenty to suggest that almost no one in public life knows how to express remorse. If you are a Catholic of a certain age, you grew up reciting the Act of Contrition every day, and you thereby learned some things about remorse. A child who learns these words learns that an apology consists of four parts: genuine remorse, the expectation of unpleasant but entirely deserved consequences, a resolution not to commit the same error again, a sincere effort to avoid the circumstances that led to the error in the first place. The moral imperative of the Act of Contrition has its limitations, of course, starting with the question of who gets to decide what might offend God. The prayer is nevertheless a good basic template for something that no longer seems basic at all: knowing how to clean up a mess of your own making. When a person causes egregious offense, the appropriate response isn t damage control. The appropriate response is a genuine apology not because you might get your TV show back but because to acknowledge a mistake is to participate fully in the human community. We all mess up. We all see through blinders. We all say hurtful things. We all nurture prejudices we don t recognize in ourselves. It isn t necessary to think of these tendencies as being part of a sinful nature to understand that they are endemic to human life. Even a full-throated apology won t erase a colossal mistake. We will never make ourselves perfect. But we can try to make ourselves better, and the culture we live in, too. I found it refreshing to read something so profound in a newspaper that is not always favorable to our beliefs. There is hope for all of us, I suppose. LAY DEANERY COUNCIL is a gathering of representatives from each of the 16 parish who meet every four months with Monsignor Emmet Nevin, dean of Rockland to work closely and share information and coordinate efforts that will enhance and strengthen the quality of Catholic life, worship, and service throughout the whole county. Father is looking for four people who might we interested in helping. Four volunteers will mean attending this meeting only once a year. If you can help, please call our parish office. PARISH FOUNDATION With the completion of both the Tappan Zee Bridge and the Palisades Interstate Parkway in 1956, Rockland County was discovered and the great exodus from New York City turned north and over the Hudson River. Many of the newcomers came from predominantly Catholic areas of Manhattan and the Bronx and soon, the churches of North Rockland were no longer adequate. Most of the young Catholic parents moving from the city had a parochial education and they wanted the same for their children. It soon became apparent that the wisest course of action would be to press for the establishment of a new parish. Finally in 1961, with the purchase of choice land, the 55 acre Burck estate west of Garnerville, Cardinal Spellman made a decision to establish a new parish which would be named in honor of the recently canonized Gregory Cardinal Barbarigo. That property cost $185,000. On Friday, June 16, Father Thomas J. Darby, a professor of history at Cathedral College was appointed as the first pastor. Mass was celebrated the very next day at the former Forester s Hall on Railroad Avenue which had been a mission church of St. Peter in Haverstraw. Mass was later moved to the Lo-Tor Skating Rink and then to the Birchwood Casino of Route 202 behind ShopRite. Next Sunday, we will observe the 57th anniversary of our foundation. God has been good to us and continues to shower His blessings upon the people who worship under the patronage of St. Gregory Barbarigo. Father LaMorte STEWARDSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE ~ G OD'S PLAN FOR G IVING For the Lord s generosity, we returned to His Church A Week Ago $10, A Year Ago $11, There was always money to pay the church bills. The trouble was, it was in the pockets of the parishioners. Tithing has changed that. FATHER S DAY will be observed next Sunday. On this day, we remember all of our fathers, living and deceased and offer the sacrifice of the Mass for them. In your contribution envelope packet, you will see a special insert for Father s Day to enroll their names. These may be placed in the Sunday offering. Additional envelopes are also in the narthex. Religious Father s Day cards are available at the parish office. GIFT CARD P URCHASES Total Purchased by 27 Families $4, % Commission to Parish $ D
4 FLAG DAY will be celebrated in the United States on Thursday, June 14. At 1:00 PM, the children from the regional school will participate in a ceremony and everyone from the parish is invited to attend. With the increase in patriotic spirit since the war in the Gulf, it is especially fitting, as proud American citizens, to demonstrate your love for the flag. Please remember to fly your flag. Many times at a funeral, if the deceased was a veteran, the flag that drapes the coffin is presented to the family at the cemetery on behalf of the President of the United States and a grateful nation. Whatever happens to these flags? We would like to be able to use them here at St. Gregory Barbarigo to fly on our flag staff in front of the regional school. Why not call the office and make arrangements for this wonderful opportunity to remember the dead in a tangible way? PARISH PRAYER NETWORK This group of parishioners is ready to pray for the urgent needs of those who call upon them for help in times of difficulty. The prayer might be from home, quietly at the adoration chapel, or at one of the prayer groups. When faced with a crisis situation, people need as many prayers as possible. If you have an urgent prayer need, call Cheryl at or cherylm59@gmail.com. RENEW+REBUILD PLEDGE REDEMPTION The fulfillment of your pledge commitments to this historic campaign will ensure that we can complete our parish Renew +Rebuild projects. Thank you for keeping current each month. Now that the church air conditioning is complete, we are moving to the replacement of the lights and fixtures. The parish meeting room project is also underway with discussions and planning. This will be in the area behind the school and near the kitchen. OUR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM is looking for a few good men or women who would be interested in serving God by volunteering to teach as a catechist. Classes are held every Tuesday and Wednesday from 5:00 to 6:30 PM and Wednesday evening from 7:00 PM to 8:30 from September through May. You will get lots of satisfaction and support. If you are interested, please call Donald Ruzzi at or sgbreled@verizon.net. ENCOURAGE is a Catholic apostolate for those who have family members with same sex attraction. A new web site has been created to help the faithful who are searching for information about Encourage; the Church s teachings on same sex attraction; and spiritual support. Visit BE PART OF EUCHARISTIC ADORATION, especially on the First Friday of each month. The nine consecutive first Fridays (with prayers to the Sacred Heart of Jesus) were requested in personal revelation to our Lord reported by Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque. The five consecutive first Saturdays (with penance and recitation of five decades of the Rosary) go back to the children of Fatima (1917) promising intercession for final perseverance to those offering reparation to Christ through the Immaculate Heart. AMERICAN BISHOPS MEETING The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) will gather for their annual Spring General Assembly from June in Fort Lauderdale. During the assembly, the full body of bishops will address issues of immigration and refugees, religious freedom at home and abroad as well as health care policy developments. The bishops will also complete consultation on the upcoming Ordinary Synod of Bishops being convened by the Holy Father for Be sure to turn on your TV to the ETERNAL WORD TELEVISION NETWORK EWTN (channel 285), NET TV (channel 48) or TELECARE (channel 296) on the Verizon FiOS TV or your other cable provider, the only place where you can see this telecast. Please pray for the bishops this week, and also for healing in our church and peace in our world. DP MURPHY COMPANY Every two months, our envelope supplier mails weekly contribution packets to our parishioners. If you no longer use contribution envelopes, we will be reviewing the list of those who receive this mailing and remove those from the list who no longer use envelopes to contribute to the parish. Thank you for your continued generosity. We encourage the use of contribution envelopes when donating to your parish. COME TO THE FEAST Tickets for the parish feast day luncheon on June 24 from 12:30 to 3:00 PM in the school gymnasium will be on sale this weekend in the narthex and at the parish office during the week. Children under 16 are free. There will be a chance to win beautiful gift baskets and raffles. Ask your friends to come with you and bring your family. EMERGENCY ACTION COMMITTEE has been advising Father on the best ways to keep our worshipers safe while they are at church. Although we cannot predict if, when or where a tragic event could take place, it is so necessary for all of us to take precautionary measures so as to ensure the safety and security of our priests, parishioners, students, employees and volunteers. It is a sad commentary on our times that we must take these measures, but we have to be as proactive as we can be in addressing what has become a reality for all of us. This committee will meet on Thursday of this week at 7:30 in the OLV conference room.
