Expectant parents may contact the parish office to arrange for the baptism seminar at 7:30 PM on the first Monday of the month to help them understand the beauty and responsibilities of the sacrament. Adults are baptized and confirmed at the Easter Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation. THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Since Catholic marriage requires a time of preparation, arrangements should begin at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding to allow for the Marriage Preparation Program and Natural Family Planning (NFP). Registered, participating and contributing parishioners may contact the parish office to begin the process. PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK If you are planning to enter the hospital for surgery, experiencing a prolonged or serious illness, or are very weak due to advancement of age, call the parish office to arrange for the sacraments of reconciliation, communion and anointing at home, also available every Saturday morning at 9:00 AM Mass. Communal anointing of the sick is celebrated at Mass each April and October. Notify us or the Catholic chaplain at Good Samaritan, Helen Hayes and Nyack of any hospitalization so that we may be of assistance. Be sure to tell the admitting office that you are a Catholic patient and a member of St. Gregory Barbarigo parish. PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL is open all day and night for Eucharistic adoration and is located at the south end of the campus on Cinder Road in front of the parish house. Parishioners and friends are encouraged to become adorers or to stop in and spend some time in quiet prayer with the Lord. WELCOME The St. Gregory Barbarigo faith community warmly welcomes you. Please introduce yourself to Father LaMorte as you leave church so that, on behalf of the entire community we may greet you. You may register at the parish office and pick up an informational packet. Kindly notify us of any change of address. MISSION STATEMENT St. Gregory Barbarigo parish is a Christian community of disciples in the Roman Catholic tradition, called by Jesus, united in Eucharistic worship and growing in faith, hope and love. Nourished through the sacraments and strengthened by God s transforming love, we are empowered to know the gospel message and to witness it to others. As Christian stewards, we are thankful for God s many gifts and we commit ourselves to share our time, talent and treasure in Christ-like service within our parish community and beyond. We seek God s blessing and guidance to be faithful to this mission.

This is a beautiful way to show care, concern, prayers and best wishes and to practice the corporal works of mercy during this jubilee year. When the unexpected happens, or life gets a bit complicated, a simple hot meal can bring comfort and support. If you would like to volunteer, or if you need a meal, call the parish office ( ). PER PETU AL EU C HAR IS TIC ADORATION C HAPEL Congratulations to the many people who spend time with Jesus in adoration of the Blessed Sacrament at our chapel. On October 10, we will have completed 14 years. The Perpetual Adoration Chapel is open all day and night. Come see what brings joy to many. THANKS FOR THE THOUGHT Please come to Mass early enough not to disrupt. Leave late enough not to insult. Worship reverently enough not to distract. And dress proudly enough not to offend. (SGB) St. Gregory Barbarigo If you have arranged an intention for Mass, consider presenting the gifts of bread and wine during that celebration and kindly inform the usher. SACRED SILENCE Please utilize the narthex for talking and reserve the church for reflection and prayer. Thank you for creating the proper climate for those who wish to make use of the sacred silence before and after Mass. 3 O THE CALENDAR OF ACTIVITIES for will soon be prepared. We will begin to compile a list of dates for the remainder of 2018 and all events and meetings for the societies and committees of the parish through the end of August Since our facilities are so well used, we want to avoid activities from conflicting with one another and to help with our long-range planning. Please begin to meet and compose your listing of proposed dates and events. Soon, we will be writing to all organization leaders. For now, be sure not to confirm any activity, whether on or off premises, until every organization has participated. Nothing should be scheduled during the week of our parish mission or Holy Week. Also, holidays, holy days, religious education and school activities take precedence over other events. OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD nce upon a time, long, long ago, in a place not so far away at all, summer was a glorious, holy season for kids, not a black hole in their activities calendar. Those were the days when happy, healthy kids would never admit to liking school in the least, and as the weather warmed, they impatiently ticked off the days until the end of school like prisoners ticking off the final days of hard time. Then it came, that magnificent, wonderful last day and the tantalizing last minute of the last day until the final bell rang. Then, the orderly walk out of school after the final dismissal during which we could barely contain ourselves before bursting onto the streets in joy. We were on the verge of freedom for a whole three months! In the next couple of days, we considered ourselves wealthy in free time for one of the few times in our lives. Great things were planned in those heady days and big ideas dreamed. The vacant lot across the street finally converted into a ball field; maybe on a rainy day we would make a fun house in someone s cellar and charge admission and scare little kids; maybe summer wouldn t be long enough to do it all! Of course, the excitement wore off and we settled into a far less hectic routine. Then, suddenly, there would be one fine clear day and cool evening in early September, and we would know for sure that it was all ending. There would be that final, fateful, enforced trip to the store for new shoes, clothes, stationery, lunch boxes. And the knot in our stomach. The idea of idle times, even for kids has become troublesome to Americans. We are a nation of compulsive doers. Even during our vacations, we feel compelled to rock climb or learn Chinese, or build birdhouses. And then we demand our kids to be just as busy. I am more than guilty of bring work with me on my vacation. I like to answer in the early morning and tackle a project or two before bedtime. But I sure do look forward to setting aside the usual routine of parish life and just relaxing with family and friends. In addition to the Salesians, Oratorians, Monsignor Weber and Father DeGaris, we welcome Father John Adjei Kyeremeh, a summer assistant living at Immaculate Conception who will be offering Mass here on occasion during the week. I write these memories today as an important reminder that in the midst of activity and the leisure of the upcoming summer vacation, that you make a deliberate effort to give some time to the Lord God, creator of every good thing. When you go away, don t forget to bring your church clothes with you. MEMORIAL OPPORTUNITIES Sometimes, people look for a way to remember their loved ones, especially those who have died. You might be interested in memorializing them in a tangible way with the donation of a new Roman Missal for use at Mass or the new revised rite of marriage (Order of Celebrating Matrimony) or weekday Mass vestments in green and violet. You may inquire at the parish office. FORTNIGHT FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM The fourteen days from June 21 (vigil of the feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More) to July 4 (American Independence Day), Catholic people across America are asked to participate in this great hymn of prayer for our country. Our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political power: St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, St. John the Baptist, Ss. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Culminating on Independence Day, this special period of prayer and public action would emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. To all our fellow Catholics, we urge an intensification of your prayers and fasting for a new birth of freedom in our beloved country. IF YOU ARE SICK Instead of calling a friend who might be a minister of communion, please notify the parish office of any illness or hospitalization so we may assist with prayers, sacraments or visits. We are happy to come to your home or the hospital. All three hospitals in the county (Good Samaritan, Helen Hayes and Nyack) have Catholic chaplains who are available every day. And don t forget the powerful prayer network that prays for intentions each day. Father LaMorte STEWARDSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE ~ G OD'S PLAN FOR G IVING For the Lord s generosity, we returned to His Church A Week Ago $10, A Year Ago $11, Through tithing, I return to the Lord the first portion of what I have received from him. RENEW+REBUILD PLEDGES By keeping current with your pledge promise, you are ensuring that our parish is able to complete the projects outlined in our promotion. When you receive your reminders, we do appreciate your prompt response. Thank you. GIFT CARD P URCHASES Total Purchased by 33 Families $4, % Commission to Parish $ D

4 LAY MINISTRY SCHEDULES for July/August have been posted on the parish web page and ed this week. You should all have rosters of each of the lay ministers with their telephone numbers, addresses and Mass preferences. Keep these listings handy, especially if you are looking for someone to replace you. Please note your assignments carefully and arrange for coverage if you cannot keep it yourself. CATHOLIC KIDS BULLETIN WORKSHEETS For the past few weeks, we have made available these worship aides for the children. They match up to the weekly Mass readings and include coloring pages, activities, psalm copy work, and a saint of the week. These are designed to be used at Mass, or as a pre-teaching activity to help prepare your students for the Sunday Mass. Be sure to look for them on the information counter when you come to Mass. MASS INTENTIONS Any one of the regularly scheduled Masses may be offered for a particular intention in memory of a deceased person; for a sick person s recovery; a special birthday; an anniversary; or other occasion. You may arrange for these Masses at the parish office for a specific date. Masses are offered on Monday through Saturday at 9:00 AM at St. Gregory; Monday through Friday at 7:30 AM at Immaculate Conception; and on Saturday evening at 5:30 PM, and Sunday morning at 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30 at St. Gregory. The customary offering for a Mass card is $15. WEEKLY RELIGIOUS EDUCATION for grades 1-8 takes place between September and May and includes preparation for the important sacraments of Reconciliation, Eucharist and Confirmation. Registration packets for those families currently in the program were sent out back in the spring. Registration packets for new families have been mailed this month. In order for us to set up the classes for the coming year we request that all registrations be returned as soon as possible. There will be no registrations accepted after Friday, August17. Any questions can be directed to the Office of Religious Education ( ). SOLIDARITY FUND FOR THE CHURCH IN AFRICA will be collected next weekend and will support a variety of programs to ensure that the quickly growing Church continues to communicate its faith and work to overcome current challenges. Please support this effort by contributing to this important collection next Sunday. PRAYER SHAWL APOSTOLATE of St. Gregory Barbarigo offers a warm, soft, hand-knit or crocheted shawl or lap blanket to those who are sick in body or in spirit. Made by members and friends of the parish, the shawls are a way of surrounding the recipient with prayer and the loving care of their parish family. In addition to the prayers that are said when the shawls are started and finished, all shawls will be accompanied by a loving message and will be blessed by Father before being given away. They are available for parishioners who are ill or too infirm to come to church. They may also be requested for sick relatives or friends. You may call the parish office ( ) for more information. We are also in need of donated skeins of new yarn of similar colors to be used in our ministry so that the blankets and shawls will be uniform. If you can, please leave them on the table in the narthex with our thanks. PARISH PRAYER NETWORK This group of parishioners is ready to pray for the urgent needs of those who call upon them for help in times of difficulty. The prayer might be from home, quietly at the adoration chapel, or at one of the prayer groups. When faced with a crisis situation, people need as many prayers as possible. If you have an urgent prayer need, call Cheryl at or cherylm59@gmail.com. PARISH FOOD MINISTRY After a very successful Feeding Our Neighbors Campaign in January, the county food pantry at Catholic Charities in Haverstraw is again in need of groceries on a weekly basis. Our parish is so very generous in sharing their bounty with the hungry and needy. When you are out shopping, please remember to pick up a few extra items and place them in the box in the narthex. Thank you very much. ADULT INITIATION AND CONVERSION Here is an invitation that you, a friend or family member won t want to miss. Are you an adult who has never been baptized, or baptized in another faith and now wish to become Catholic? The RCIA process also welcomes adults who have been baptized Catholic but never completed their initiation with the sacraments of Communion and Confirmation. If you are looking for a place to belong, a community with whom you can share questions and beliefs, perhaps you or a friend would like to find out more about the Catholic Church. Sessions begin in the fall and run through the feast of Pentecost each year. Call Father at the parish office ( ) to ask about the RCIA D

5 PLEASE MAKE A WILL AND REMEMBER YOUR PARISH Most of you own more than you realize. But no matter the size of your estate, if you want to provide for your surviving relatives and others, you need to have a will. If you die without making a will, you lose the ability to control the disposition of your assets. The law of the state will tell your family where your money and property goes. Furthermore, potential savings on income tax and estate tax, which can be arranged when preparing your will or estate plan, will be lost if there is no will. So, as a matter of prudence and good care for your family, we urge everyone to make a will. And when you do that, after you have provided for your loved ones, we hope that you will designate a gift for the good works of St. Gregory Barbarigo Parish. Naming our parish as a charitable beneficiary is simple. Your bequest can be a specific amount of money, property or stock. You can also name our parish as a contingency beneficiary if someone named in your will is no longer living. To make a gift, simply include the following words in your will: I give, devise, and bequeath to St. Gregory Barbarigo Roman Catholic Church of Garnerville, New York (here you write the amount being given) to be used for the needs of the Church. SUMMER STEWARDSHIP Why not consider placing sacrificial giving to our parish at the top of your vacation check list as you make plans to be away from home this summer? Try to give an extra church envelope or extra week s gift beginning three or four weeks before you leave for vacation. Some can gift their summer stewardship before leaving. Others may make it up when they return. Whatever method you choose to continue your support of St. Gregory Barbarigo, it is up to you. Several years ago, we implemented the voluntary process of automatic deductions from checking or savings accounts. This is called WE SHARE. Here is what a parishioner says about it: I use We Share to donate to St. Gregory. It is better for me. No envelope to remember, no check to write on Sunday morning, better for budget reasons. It is better for St. Gregory: no envelope to process, no deposit to make, no missed donation of any kind, donation is still made even if I am out of town. We just want you to know how important your continued stewardship is and how much it is appreciated and needed by your parish. BATHROOM BREAKS One of the most popular rooms in our church is... the restroom. Are you surprised? Some days, it seems as if it is in constant use, mostly by our children. If you have to go, you have to go! But ideally, is this the best use of time for our children at church? And is it wise to allow them to walk around unaccompanied? A good reminder: before you leave for church on Sunday, visit the bathroom at home.
