THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM First and third Sundays at 1:00 PM. Expectant parents may contact the parish office to arrange for the baptism seminar at 7:30 PM on the first Monday of the month to help them understand the beauty and responsibilities of the sacrament. Adults are baptized and confirmed at the Easter Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation. THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Since Catholic marriage requires a time of preparation, arrangements should begin at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding to allow for the Marriage Preparation Program and Natural Family Planning (NFP). Registered, participating and contributing parishioners may contact the parish office to begin the process. PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK If you are planning to enter the hospital for surgery, experiencing a prolonged or serious illness, or are very weak due to advancement of age, call the parish office to arrange for the sacraments of reconciliation, communion and anointing at home, also available every Saturday morning at Mass. Communal anointing of the sick is celebrated at Mass each April and October. Notify us or the Catholic chaplain at Good Samaritan, Helen Hayes and Nyack of any hospitalization so that we may be of assistance. Be sure to tell the admitting office that you are a Catholic patient and a member of St. Gregory Barbarigo parish. PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL is open all day and night for Eucharistic adoration and is located at the south end of the campus on Cinder Road in front of the parish house. Parishioners and friends are encouraged to become adorers or to stop in and spend some time in quiet prayer with the Lord. WELCOME The St. Gregory Barbarigo faith community warmly welcomes you. Please introduce yourself to Father LaMorte as you leave church so that, on behalf of the entire community we may greet you. You may register at the parish office and pick up an informational packet. Kindly notify us of any change of address. MISSION STATEMENT St. Gregory Barbarigo parish is a Christian community of disciples in the Roman Catholic tradition, called by Jesus, united in Eucharistic worship and growing in faith, hope and love. Nourished through the sacraments and strengthened by God s transforming love, we are empowered to know the gospel message and to witness it to others. As Christian stewards, we are thankful for God s many gifts and we commit ourselves to share our time, talent and treasure in Christ-like service within our parish community and beyond. We seek God s blessing and guidance to be faithful to this mission.

3 B CONGRATULATIONS TO MONSIGNOR WEBER on the fortieth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood which will be celebrated next Sunday at a special 2:00 PM Mass. We have been blessed by his ministry at SGB since the fall of 2012 and we offer him our prayers ad multos annos (to many years or many happy returns). OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD e sure to read the insert in this bulletin which contains the spiritual and financial report of our parish to you, our good and generous people. Look it over and should you have any questions that need to be answered, just let me know or speak with Diego Aviles, Donna Bochnik, Kevin Coyne, Paul Gonoud, Anthony Parisi, Donna Ruzzi, Bob Stagnari, Ralph Travaglini or Victor York. I hope you will be pleased with the progress that we have made over the last six years together and that you will feel free to come to me for any clarification. A few items to note: across the country, we are seeing a decline in church participation and this has not escaped our parish. Mass attendance, baptisms, communions, marriages, enrollments in the religious education program and regional schools are all down; confirmations and funerals are up! The Sunday offertory has dropped a bit and the parish revenue enjoyed a slight increase. Personnel expenses are slightly increased with the addition of both Father Jon Tveit and Father John Wilson during their ministry with us. Utilities will continue to go down, especially with the replacement of every light bulb in the church, rectory, school and convent. O&R and many utility companies offer attractive energy cost savings initiatives which allowed us to upgrade to high efficiency LED lighting. Over the next few years, we will benefit from handsome pay backs. We are also looking into the proper regulation of the heat at the school, particularly in the second floor classrooms. Since I have been with you at St. Gregory, we have been able to add significant surplus to our savings and I am very grateful for your generosity. This money has served us well. We were able to pay off outstanding bills from many years ago and the loan on the school roof. The monthly debt reduction collection was eliminated, the yards and parking areas were repaved, a new sacristy and kitchen were built in the church, we replaced an aging sound system and we will add the rest to your generous pledges of $1.5 million in our recent capital campaign, Renew + Rebuild. But wait! There s more! And I will be telling you about it in the weeks to come. Thank you again for all that you have accomplished. Keep up the good work. More good things are in store for this remarkable parish. Each week, as we light an additional candle on the Advent wreath, we thank God for giving us a second chance by sending his only begotten Son, who is our teacher and savior. CHRISTMAS MASSES As Christmas approaches, we are naturally concerned about the crowded conditions at our evening Masses. The only real solution is for some people to spread themselves over the less crowded Masses. The schedule for Christmas Masses is 5:30 and 8:00 PM on Saturday evening; and Midnight, 7:30, 9:00, 10:30 and 12:00 on December 25. The most crowded Mass is 5:30 on Christmas Eve. Therefore, we encourage our faithful weekly participating parishioners to come early to that 5:30 Mass if you want a seat. Better yet, why not attend one of the other Masses which are less crowded and more prayerful? St. Gregory s best kept secret is the Mass at 8:00 PM. Please be understanding and welcoming with our visitors at whatever Mass you attend. Who knows? You might impress them with your kindness and they may decide to make St. Gregory Barbarigo their permanent place of worship. RETIRED RELIGIOUS COLLECTION We have the opportunity to show the retired sisters and brothers our gratitude for the many years of selfless dedication to God, the Church and all of us. There could scarcely be a more worthy cause. This offering will be collected next weekend and may be taken from the second 5% of your tithe. Thank you for your prayers, your generosity and your good faith. BLESSING THE BAMBINELLI ON GAUDETE SUNDAY Each year at the Vatican, at the Angelus on the Third Sunday of Advent, the Holy Father blesses the figures of the Baby Jesus brought by the children of Rome which will be placed in the crèches of their homes on Christmas. As you try to live in the reality of what the crib is, the love of Christ, his humility, his poverty, then bring to church the figure of Jesus for this blessing before it is displayed in your crib. The blessing will be given after the communion rite next Sunday. Father LaMorte STEWARDSHIP IS A WAY OF LIFE ~ G OD'S PLAN FOR G IVING OPEN HOUSE CHRISTMAS PARTY AT THE PARISH RECTORY Everyone is most warmly invited to visit the parish Christmas tree the most beautiful tree in all of Rockland County! 4 NINTH ANNUAL CONCERT OF ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS CAROLS this Friday and Saturday at 8:00 PM in the church. Tickets are $10 each and are available for purchase in the narthex and at the parish office. IMMACULATE CONCEPTION is celebrated on Thursday, December 8 as a holy day of obligation. Masses will be offered at 7:00 AM (for those who may have to leave early for work), and 10:00 with the children if school is in session and 7:30 PM (for those who may be returning from work) as we thank God for the great woman, Mary of Nazareth, mother of Jesus and the patroness of our country. We know that the observance of holy days of obligation is very confusing, especially because there are so many different regulations for each one and that is why we are careful to keep you informed in this bulletin. ATTENTION LAY MINISTERS If you need to request certain days during January and February on which you cannot be scheduled, please notify us at the parish office by Friday, December 9. After that date, we ask you to arrange for substitutes from the rosters that were provided to you. Can you help serve at Mass on Christmas Eve and Day and New Year s Day? Please call us at the parish office to volunteer ( or sgbparish@verizon.net). ADOPT A FAMILY FOR CHRISTMAS Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland is looking for sponsors to adopt needy children and families to provide them with Christmas gifts. Last year, through your efforts, the program touched the lives of over 900 people in our community. Through your generosity we provided 2,000 toys and more than 500 articles of clothing. You select the family size and Catholic Community Services of Rockland will send you a family profile which contains everything you would need to know to shop for your family. If you as an individual or in collaboration with family, friends, or coworkers would like to adopt a family, please call Marie at , x17. Please join with us to make this Christmas joyous for all in our community. PASTORAL COUNCIL is a consultative body within the parish which serves to advise the pastor who must foster the practical and pastoral activities of the community. Meetings are held quarterly, but committees meet more frequently. The next meeting will be held this Tuesday at 7:30 PM in the OLV Room (followed by March 7 and June 6). Some of the items for discussion will include an examination of the daily and Sunday Mass schedule, a closer concentration on the young people of the parish, greater involvement in parish activities from families whose children are enrolled in religious education and the regional school, the creation of a junior TCC, teenage liturgies, the archdiocesan cluster mission (May ), and a look at community service opportunities. Carolyn Caramanica continues to serve as chair person. COLUMBIETTE CHRISTMAS POT LUCK SOCIAL will be held at the council hall in Haverstraw on Tuesday, December 13 at 6:30 PM and all columbiettes are invited to attend. Also, if you are interested in joining the columbiettes, please come and learn more about us. CATHEDRAL PILGRIMAGE We will be on our way this Wednesday to the mother church of the archdiocese as we celebrate Mass at 10:30 for the deceased priests of St. Gregory Barbarigo. Two Coach USA buses carrying 112 pilgrims will leave from the lower parking lot at 8:00 AM; and depart NYC at 6:00 PM for the return trip home. Looking forward to a great day. HANGING OF THE GREENS We need your help to decorate the church for Christmas. If you can assist, please let us know. Decorating will take place on Friday, December 23 at 10:00 AM (right after nine o clock Mass). Come and join us, but please call the office to let us know that you will be helping. CHRISTMAS ANGEL PROJECT In partnership with Catholic Charities Community Services of Rockland and Birthright of Rockland, we will be collecting warm winter clothes (sizes 5-12) and small toys for the needy families of the county during the early weeks of Advent. The children will need socks, underwear, gloves, hats, scarves, pajamas, sweatshirts, shirts, pants, and coats. You may also include a small toy, such as a coloring book and crayons, puzzle, dolls, stuffed animals, books, or hair accessories along with your gift. Christmas Angel tags, which are labeled with the gender and size of each individual are on the tree in the narthex. Wrap your gift and secure the tag to it and return items by December 11. Thank you for your participation in the Christmas Angel Project which is coordinated by Teens Connected by Christ D

5 A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE As we enter the season of giving and remembrance, we are hopeful that you will prayerfully consider planning a generous gift to your parish. Give back to God in proportion to what He has given to you in your life. Perhaps you have been blessed by God in a particular way this year and want to say thank you through a Christmas gift to His Church. The many programs and services offered by St. Gregory Barbarigo depend solely on you and many other generous benefactors for financial support. During 2016, our religious education program, regional school, family catechesis, St. Vincent DePaul Society, support to the grieving, special Masses, breakfasts, receptions, parish picnic and other gatherings of hospitality, were made possible by you and others who recognize the importance of our parish to all those who come to us for assistance. All of these offerings are crucial for the continued and ever-expanding pastoral care of the six thousand Catholic souls entrusted to this parish. When making out your Christmas gift list, please remember to include St. Gregory Barbarigo. If you are using ParishPay, designate your gift there. CONFESSIONS DURING ADVENT The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be celebrated Saturdays, December 10 and 17 from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. Also, we will be celebrating RECONCILIATION MONDAY on December 19, with confessions being available in every parish in the archdiocese from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. It is a great thing to hear about God s merciful love. It is even better to experience it personally. No matter how long it may have been since your last confession weeks, months, years, or even decades there is no time like now to know the mercy of God in the sacrament of penance. Seize this moment of grace during Advent. Bring a friend. ST. ANTHONY CEMETERY EXPANSION COMPLETED Pre-need graves will be sold beginning tomorrow by appointment only. You may call , x7.
