THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM First and third Sundays at 1:00 PM. Expectant parents may contact the parish office to arrange for the baptism seminar at 7:30 PM on the first Monday of the month to help them understand the beauty and responsibilities of the sacrament. Adults are baptized and confirmed at the Easter Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation. THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Since Catholic marriage requires a time of preparation, arrangements should begin at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding to allow for the Marriage Preparation Program and Natural Family Planning (NFP). Registered, participating and contributing parishioners may contact the parish office to begin the process. PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK If you are planning to enter the hospital for surgery, experiencing a prolonged or serious illness, or are very weak due to advancement of age, call the parish office to arrange for the sacraments of reconciliation, communion and anointing at home, also available every Saturday morning at Mass. Communal anointing of the sick is celebrated at Mass each April and October. Notify us or the Catholic chaplain at Good Samaritan, Helen Hayes and Nyack of any hospitalization so that we may be of assistance. Be sure to tell the admitting office that you are a Catholic patient and a member of St. Gregory Barbarigo parish. PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL is open all day and night for Eucharistic adoration and is located at the south end of the campus on Cinder Road in front of the parish house. Parishioners and friends are encouraged to become adorers or to stop in and spend some time in quiet prayer with the Lord. WELCOME The St. Gregory Barbarigo faith community warmly welcomes you. Please introduce yourself to Father LaMorte as you leave church so that, on behalf of the entire community we may greet you. You may register at the parish office and pick up an informational packet. Kindly notify us of any change of address. MISSION STATEMENT St. Gregory Barbarigo parish is a Christian community of disciples in the Roman Catholic tradition, called by Jesus, united in Eucharistic worship and growing in faith, hope and love. Nourished through the sacraments and strengthened by God s transforming love, we are empowered to know the gospel message and to witness it to others. As Christian stewards, we are thankful for God s many gifts and we commit ourselves to share our time, talent and treasure in Christ-like service within our parish community and beyond. We seek God s blessing and guidance to be faithful to this mission.

NEW PK 3/4 PROGRAM AT SGB There are still openings for September. This is a full day class just like the rest of the classes. Call the school business office at for more information. PARISH OFFICE SUMMER HOURS The parish office will be open to serve you on Monday through Thursday from to 4:00 PM; and on Friday from 9:00 to 12:00 Noon. At other times, there will be the opportunity to leave a message in the voice mailbox which is frequently monitored. All phone calls will be returned in a timely manner. Regular office hours resume on Tuesday, September 5. If you are reading me in church, please take me home or place me back at the church doors, not in the pews. Thank you. If you have arranged an intention for Mass, consider presenting the gifts of bread and wine during that celebration and kindly inform the usher. CATECHISTS NEEDED FOR RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Consider volunteering to teach our faith to the students in our religious education program. Work with the young people of our parish to instill in them the same love of the faith you have experienced. Catechists will begin this ministry by attending an informative catechist workshop in September before classes begin; will receive a manual, guidelines, and weekly lesson plans; guidance, resources and support are offered throughout the year. Can you help us on Tuesday or Wednesday at 5:00 PM or on Wednesday at 7:00 PM from September to May? Substitute catechists are also needed. Please call Mr. Donald Ruzzi at or sgbreled@verizon.net. FREE UNIVERSAL PRE-KINDERGARTEN is available at St. Gregory Barbarigo Regional School. UPK is a high quality PK education for 4-year-olds, available at no cost regardless of household income. Offered in partnership with NYS and local public school districts, UPK is designed to help more children begin their education at an early age and get a solid start on the road to active learning with a maximum of 18 children in each 2 ½ hour class, Monday through Friday. A full-day, wrap around program is available at a reasonable tuition. Call or for more information. WEEKLY ENVELOPES are available to those who need them. It is a good way to plan your contributions to keep the work of the parish going. Call Linda or Mary at the parish office ( ) or sgbparish@verizon.net if you d like them mailed to you D

3 D ARCHCARE (THE CONTINUING C ARE C OMMUNITY OF THE ARCHDIOCESE OF N EW Y ORK) Need help caring for yourself or someone else, but not sure where to turn with questions about: housing for seniors and disabled persons, access to healthcare, health-related legal and financial issues, dementia care, transportation options, caregiver support groups, food and nutrition, volunteer opportunities? Call the ArchCare Navigation Center at CARE (TTY/TDD): 711 from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM, seven days a week. We ll answer. Help is totally free. OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD avid Brooks in The New York Times writes about the superlative new documentary Won t You Be My Neighbor?, and keys in on Fred Rogers unabashed Christian message of hope and love: There s nothing obviously moving here, and yet the audience is moved: sniffling, wiping the moisture from their cheeks. The power is in Rogers s radical kindness at a time when public kindness is scarce. It s as if the pressure of living in a time such as ours gets released in that theater as we re reminded that, oh yes, that s how people can be. Moral elevation gains strength when it is scarce. But there s also something more radical going on. Mister Rogers was a lifelong Republican and an ordained Presbyterian minister. His show was an expression of the mainline Protestantism that was once the dominating morality in American life. Once, as Tom Junod described in a profile for Esquire, Rogers met a 14-year-old boy whose cerebral palsy left him sometimes unable to walk or talk. Rogers asked the boy to pray for him. The boy was thunderstruck. He had been the object of prayers many times, but nobody had asked him to pray for another. He said he would try since Mister Rogers must be close to God and if Mister Rogers liked him he must be okay. Junod complimented Rogers on cleverly boosting the boy s self-esteem, but Rogers didn t look at the situation that way at all: Oh, heavens no, Tom! I didn t ask him for his prayers for him; I asked for me. I asked him because I think that anyone who has gone through challenges like that must be very close to God. I asked him because I wanted his intercession. And here is the radicalism that infused that show: that the child is closer to God than the adult; that the sick are closer than the healthy; that the poor are closer than the rich and the marginalized closer than the celebrated. Rogers often comforted children on the show and taught them in simple terms, but the documentary shows how he did so with a profound respect for the dignity of each child that almost rises to veneration. You see his visceral disgust for shows that don t show respect that dump slime on children, that try to entertain them with manic violence. In the gospel of Fred Rogers, children are our superiors in the way they trust each person they meet, the way they lack guile, the way a child can admit simple vulnerability. Children are superior for their instinctive small acts of neighborliness, the small hug, sharing a toy. This summer, if you can, see the movie. It s beautiful. RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS or RCIA is the Church s way to initiate new adult members through a process of total formation. It involves doctrinal formation (believing with the Church community); practical formation (living with the Church community); liturgical formation (praying with the Church community), and apostolic formation (service with the Church community). Topics discussed include Scripture, the Mass, God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, Church history and structure, Mary and the Saints, sin and Reconciliation, conscience and moral decision-making, Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Anointing of the Sick, Marriage, Holy Orders, ministry, and social justice. This process is for adults who have never been baptized; adults baptized in another Christian faith tradition who are interested in the Catholic tradition; baptized adult Catholics who wish to prepare to receive First Eucharist and Confirmation; non-catholics who want to learn more about Catholic Christianity; Catholics who may have been away from the Church for a period of time. RCIA shares information about the Catholic Church, but the decision to join the Catholic Church is made through personal discernment. We meet once a week on Wednesday evenings from September through the Easter season and Pentecost Sunday; and during and after one of the Sunday Masses. If you re interested, you may speak with Father. SOMEONE WHO CAN LISTEN Everyone goes through crises sometimes. When that is happening, we can benefit from a c on ve r sation with an experienc e d professional counselor who shares our Catholic perspective. Our parish can make a connection for you through Catholic Charities PARISH COUNSELING NETWORK. Our parishioners can make an appointment to meet with a professional counselor in Rockland County or anyplace in the archdiocese for up to six meetings, with only a $10 co-pay per session. This can be arranged easily. Tell Father that you want to talk with a counselor. He will contact the appointment desk on your behalf and then you can call and arrange your first visit. When faced with a crisis situation, people need as many prayers as possible. Call Cheryl at or cherylm59@gmail.com. PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL Many people enjoy having quiet time, personal time, with the God they love. Lots of good decisions and renewed commitment come from being quiet with Jesus, especially during EUCHARISTIC ADORATION. We invite you to be present for this time while the Blessed Sacrament is exposed on our altar. This may prove to be a most peaceful and rewarding hour. If there is anyone who wishes to be a guardian and a partner for Eucharistic Adoration or a substitute for the summer months, we can use your participation. Interested? Call LAY DEANERY COUNCIL is a gathering of representatives from each of the 16 parish who meet every four months with Monsignor Emmet Nevin, dean of Rockland to work closely and share information and coordinate efforts that will enhance and strengthen the quality of Catholic life, worship, and service throughout the whole county. Father is looking for four people who might we interested in helping. Four volunteers will mean attending this meeting only once a year. If you can help, please call our parish office. CATHOLIC KIDS BULLETIN WORKSHEETS For the past few weeks, we have made available these worship aides for the children. They match up to the weekly Mass readings and include coloring pages, activities, psalm copy work, and a saint of the week. These are designed to be used at Mass, or as a pre-teaching activity to help prepare your students for the Sunday Mass. Be sure to look for them on the information counter when you come to Mass. ONLINE GIVING WE SHARE UPDATE If you are subscribed to electronic giving and have not signed on to your WeShare account since the February transition from Parish Pay, please verify your account by sending an to adnygiving@4lpi.com. WeShare can be contacted directly at POCKET PRAYER SHAWLS provide comfort to those who receive them as well as to those who knot or crochet these special gifts. As the name suggests, a pocket prayer shawl is a miniature version of the larger one. It is small enough that it can be carried in a pocket or purse and can be taken anywhere. If you are in need of comfort for whatever reason, this small, handmade square that has been blessed might bring you that comfort. Take one home from the narthex today. INVITE A FRIEND TO MASS ~~ REALLY? Do you invite non-catholics to Mass? For some it is a good start to learning our faith. For others, it is better to begin slowly. Consider these steps. DO LIFE FIRST. It can be a stretch for someone who doesn t know Christ to find him at Mass the first time. If he or she is not use to ritual, Mass may be confusing and seem exclusive because non-catholics can not receive Holy Communion. Instead, try sharing the warmth of a Christ-centered community by including your friend to a parish dinner or fund raising event where she can socialize with others who live for Christ. MAKE IT SMALL. Bring your friend along to bible study, a prayer meeting, or small study group. Adult faith formation classes also make good introductions to faith in a small setting for someone not use to formal religion. LET IT COME NATURALLY. Your friend will let you know when it is time to graduate to Mass. By that point, he will be more comfortable in the parish setting and will have a better idea of what to expect. RENEW+REBUILD PLEDGE REDEMPTION The fulfillment of your pledge commitments to this historic campaign will ensure that we can complete our parish Renew +Rebuild projects. Thank you for keeping current each month. Now that the church air conditioning is complete, we are moving to the replacement of the lights and fixtures. The parish meeting room project is also underway with discussions and planning. This will be in the area behind the school and near the kitchen. LAUNDRY HELP WANTED Each year during the summer, we ask for help with the washing of the albs that are worn by our altar servers. As you might imagine, they get soiled very quickly and easily. If you could take a few home to wash, you may pick them up after 11:30 Mass on Sunday and return them for the next weekend. Thank you for considering this help to our parish D

5 DP MURPHY COMPANY Our envelope supplier mails weekly contribution packets to our parishioners. It would be helpful if you would advise the parish office if there is any problem with this mailing, when you will be away for several months, or if you will be moving away from our parish so that we can make the appropriate changes with the distribution. If you no longer use contribution envelopes, we are reviewing the list of those who receive this mailing and removing those that haven t been used in the past six months. Thank you for your continued generosity. We encourage the use of contribution envelopes when donating to your parish. WELCOME We invite all parishioners to participate in our spiritual and community life for a richer experience of the parish. If you are new to St. Gregory Brbarigo, please introduce yourself to Father after Mass. If you would like to register as a member, call the parish office ( ). CONSIDER YOURSELF AT HOME; CONSIDER YOURSELF ONE OF THE FAMILY We are happy to offer a warm welcome to the newly registered members of our parish family: ALFRED, TRACI, JOSEPH, ROBERT AND DOMINIC CARNEVALE; VIOLET COVATI; JEAN, MARIE, STANLEY, DUDLEY, AND ASHLEY LAGRENADE; ANGELA MCSWEENEY; JOSE AND ANA POSADA; ERIC, SIOBAHN, ALEXEA AND AYNA SONNENBERG. PLANNING A VACATION? Almost everyone does! And whether it s traveling, camping or other avenues of escape, most of them take us away from home and things connected with everyday living. We hope you get your vacation this year. Get the most out of it by attending Mass and receiving Communion as often as you can. If you want to know when/where to attend Mass, visit or call You will get the 5 nearest church locations, phone numbers and Mass times. Bring home a bulletin from the church you attend. Father is always interested in what goes on in other places. Why not send a postcard to us here? They will be displayed in the narthex. May God bless you and keep you safe if traveling or at home. PARISH EVENTS AT BOWLINE POINT TOWN PARK THIS SUMMER Once again, we are planning two popular activities at the town park. The Wedding of the Sea in August and the parish picnic in September. There will be more information in the upcoming bulletins.
