THE SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Confessions are heard on Saturday afternoon at 4:00 PM and anytime upon reasonable request. THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM First and third Sundays at 1:00 PM. Expectant parents may contact the parish office to arrange for the baptism seminar at 7:30 PM on the first Monday of the month to help them understand the beauty and responsibilities of the sacrament. Adults are baptized and confirmed at the Easter Vigil after completing the stages of the Rite of Christian Initiation. THE SACRAMENT OF MATRIMONY Since Catholic marriage requires a time of preparation, arrangements should begin at least six months before the proposed date of the wedding to allow for the Marriage Preparation Program and Natural Family Planning (NFP). Registered, participating and contributing parishioners may contact the parish office to begin the process. PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK If you are planning to enter the hospital for surgery, experiencing a prolonged or serious illness, or are very weak due to advancement of age, call the parish office to arrange for the sacraments of reconciliation, communion and anointing at home, also available every Saturday morning at 9:00 AM Mass. Communal anointing of the sick is celebrated at Mass each April and October. Notify us or the Catholic chaplain at Good Samaritan, Helen Hayes and Nyack of any hospitalization so that we may be of assistance. Be sure to tell the admitting office that you are a Catholic patient and a member of St. Gregory Barbarigo parish. PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL is open all day and night for Eucharistic adoration and is located at the south end of the campus on Cinder Road in front of the parish house. 3 S CHURCH IN CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE At the request of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, the archdiocese will collect this offering next Sunday to support the essential unmet pastoral needs in that sector of the Lord s vineyard formerly under Soviet control. Our assistance is vital to the growth and strength of the Church in these regions. Your gift will do much to restore the Church and build its future in this corner of the world. Thank you for your generous response which will come from the second 5% of your tithe. OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD tress can result from feeling powerless in difficulties, yet change isn t always up to us. Knowing when to step back and surrender can actually bring peace. Back in November, just before Thanksgiving, we heard the sound of running water in the wall of the St. Dominic room on the lower level of the rectory. Upon immediate investigation, we learned there was a broken water line leading to the building. We had it fixed as soon as we could and thought our problems were solved. But, as the weeks went on, the Suez water bill was still unusually high indicating more usage than normal. Thanks to the diligence of Brian Fagan and Linda Neilson and the leadership of parishioner Jim Schneider who works for Suez, we discovered that the original water line from 1963 had potential for many more leaks. We were advised that the best course of action was to abandon that line and run new water service to our campus. So, as you can see, there are various places where the lawn is dug up and new lines are being run. This unexpected expense, in the midst of our capital improvements had me greatly worried, even though we have money in the bank for the rainy day. I needed serenity and peace and I needed it fast! I know that Jesus does not want us to be troubled by our worldly concerns. When we feel ourselves starting to worry or stew about a difficult situation (or person), act out your belief that your prayer for resolution will be answered. Substitute positive, cheerful thoughts for negative ones. God is in control. While we hope to be strong witnesses of our faith, not everyone will see us that way. Sometimes sharp words or critical comments from others can disturb our peace. Feedback can be helpful, but if anyone gets to you for more than a day or two, consult a fellow Christian whom you trust for a better perspective. Take every opportunity to appreciate your place in God s kingdom. Relish the tasks you have been given, for a job well done rings satisfaction and increased contentment. BLESSING OF THE SOIL On Saturday, April 28, Catholic Charities will hold its eighth annual ceremonial blessing of the community garden which is attended by religious leaders, volunteers and supporters. At the ceremony, artwork from Rockland County's youth will be unveiled and mounted at the entrance of the food pantry. All are welcome to join us at 12:00 noon at 78 Hudson Avenue in Haverstraw. Cardinal Dolan will be presiding at the blessing. Father LaMorte HELP DEFEAT LATE-TERM ABORTION EXPANSION Very soon the State Senate Health Committee will call a vote on the so-called Reproductive Health Act, S.2796, a late-term abortion expansion bill. Contact State Senator Larkin to urge opposition to this bill which would allow abortion through all nine months of pregnancy, would empower non-doctors to perform abortions, and declare abortion to be a "fundamental" right. Take action now by clicking LITTLE ROCK SCRIPTURE STUDY L IFE ETERNAL IN SCRIPTURE This study, led by Deacon John and Lucy Kelly will begin on Thursday, April 26 and will have two separate sessions at 3:00 in the OLV Library and 7:00 PM in School Room 101; it will run for 90 minutes for seven weeks. The biblical promise of eternal life appears late in Scripture, but it blossoms into fullness with the resurrection of Christ. Explore the growing nature of the hope of those who have called upon the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob in the past and the crystallization of our hope for eternal life in the victory of Christ over death. PENTECOST SUNDAY: THINK RED, WEAR RED May 20 is Pentecost Sunday, the completion of the 50 days of Easter and the feast of the Holy Spirit. In our community, let s celebrate again this year in a very unique way let s all wear RED. What a magnificent spectacle. A sea of red, a gesture of unity in honor of the Paraclete, the Spirit-Comforter sent by our Lord Himself to fill the void of His physical absence and to keep alive the memory of His return. Our parish can make a connection for you through the archdiocesan PARISH COUNSELING NETWORK. Our parishioners can make an appointment to meet with a professional counselor in Rockland County or anyplace in the archdiocese for up to six meetings, with only a $10 co-pay per session. This can be arranged easily. Tell Father that you want to talk with a counselor. He will contact the network on your behalf, and then you can call and arrange your first visit. CATHOLIC KIDS BULLETIN WORKSHEETS Beginning last Sunday, we have made available these worship aides for the children. They match up to the weekly Mass readings and include coloring pages, activities, psalm copy work, and a saint of the week. These are designed to be used at Mass, or as a pre-teaching activity to help prepare your students for the Sunday Mass. Be sure to look for them on the information counter when you come to Mass. MOTHER S DAY is Sunday, May 13 and on this day, we remember all of our mothers, living and deceased and offer the sacrifice of the Mass for them. In your envelope packet, you will see a special insert for Mother s Day to enroll their names for a remembrance at Mass. These may be placed in the Sunday offering basket or sent to the parish office. Additional envelopes are in the narthex. Religious Mother s Day cards are available at the parish office. ADMINISTRATIVE PROFESSIONALS WEEK was created in 1952 and it continues to be the opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and dependability of our loyal administrative professionals. Here at St. Gregory Barbarigo, we salute Linda Neilson, Mary Maher and Deirdre Armida at the parish office; Eliana Pignard and Rose Wamsley at the school office; and Maureen Michelitch at the religious education office. 5 BABY BOTTLE DRIVE FOR BIRTHRIGHT OF ROCKLAND COUNTY Help this fine organization as they assist women distressed by unplanned pregnancies to feel accepted, worthwhile and hopeful. From Mother s Day, May 6 to Father s Day, June 17 our parish will again participate in this program of support. Take a baby bottle home with you, fill it with money, loose change or checks and return it to the narthex. Mothers and their babies will be very grateful for your generosity. NORTH ROCKLAND 5K RUN/WALK On Sunday, June 3 at 9:00 AM at Bowline Point Town Park, the proceeds of this event will benefit three families from the community, Isabella Munoz, Peter Sasso and Brian Dolan. The children s race begins at 8:30. This is chaired by Town of Haverstraw supervisor Howard T. NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER AND PROTEST AGAINST PLANNED PARENTHOOD Come and pray the rosary this Saturday and be a loving witness outside Planned Parenthood, an organization that oversees the destruction of over a quarter million unborn children a year by abortion. This is a peaceful, prayerful vigil in Rockland County on public property on Perlman Drive in Spring Valley from 11:00 AM to Noon. But ideally, the worst time to go to the bathroom while you are at church is during the readings and homily, while Jesus himself is reading and preaching (Catechism, # ) and during the Eucharistic Prayer and consecration (when you are at the foot of the cross at Calvary.) Please avoid leaving Jesus when he speaks or when you are at the foot of Calvary. If you have to go, you have to go. But could you wait for a more appropriate time?
