Lent is traditionally the time for preparation for baptism. During this time, catechumens will prepare for the reception of the Sacraments of Initiation at the Easter Vigil. For those already baptized, Lent is a time to reflect upon how to best live the baptismal commitment. Lent is also a time of preparation for the celebration of the mysteries of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. During this penitential season, we are encouraged to take on ascetical practices, such as prayer, fasting and almsgiving, to help make our bodies, minds and spirits receptive to God s grace. Please take some time to review this Lenten Newsletter. In it you will find a wide range of services and events for Lent, Holy Week and Easter please take advantage of these moments to deepen your faith and your relationship to Christ. Que Dios los bendiga! Padre Jim Schuerman Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament What is Eucharistic Adoration? Catholics believe that during the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, through the miracle of transubstantiation, that the bread and wine which we offer as the bloodless sacrifice to our Lord, truly becomes the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus. It is His true Presence in the form of bread and wine. It is Christ. During Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, the monstrance (monstrance comes from the Latin "monstrare" to show, to expose to view) is placed on the altar of the church or chapel for adoration. Adoration is a sign of devotion to and worship of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Eucharistic adoration and meditation are more than merely looking at the Blessed Host, but are believed to be a continuation of what was celebrated in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. 2 Page 2 Celebrating the Year of Faith Pope Benedict XVI has called for this special Year of Faith as an invitation to a an authentic and renewed conversion to the Lord, the one Savior of the world (Apostolic Letter, Porta Fidei, 6). He hopes it will inspire, the aspiration to profess the faith in fullness and with renewed conviction, with confidence and hope, in all believers. It will also be a good opportunity to intensify the celebration of the faith in the liturgy, especially in the Eucharist, which is the summit towards which the activity of the Church is directed... and also the source from which all of its power flows (Sacrosanctum Concilium, 10). At the same time, we make it our prayer that believers witness of life may grow in credibility. We pray to rediscover the content of the faith that is professed, celebrated, lived and prayed, (cf. Constituzione Apostolica, Fidei Depositum, 116) and to reflect on the act of faith, is a task that every believer must make his own, especially in the course of this Year (Porta fidei, 9). Seeking to Improve Your Focus and Participation at Mass? Here is a way to get ready for the liturgies of Holy Week and the Easter Triduum. Pope Benedict announced a Year of Faith, beginning October 11, 2012, the 50th anniversary of the Opening of the Second Vatican Council. The Council's observations on the Mass are a great way for lay men and women to increase their faith through greater understanding of and participation in the Mass. Special attention will be paid over the six sessions this Lent on how the Council's reflections are manifest in the liturgical readings and prayers of Holy Week. Each session will also explore an aspect of the thriving liturgical life of the Archdioceses of Milwaukee and Chicago before the Council. Each session will spend some time on a lay man or woman such as Dorothy Day or JRR Tolkien whose life was enriched by the Mass in the years before the Council. Join us if you like liturgy, history, beautiful churches, or your mind just plain wanders at Mass. A Biblical Walk Through the Mass Have you ever wondered about why we say certain prayers and perform certain actions at Mass? Join us for "A Biblical Walkthrough the Mass" by Dr. Edward Sri and find out. This critically acclaimed DVD series and accompanying book have inspired thousands of Catholics to have a more profound understanding of the Mass, leading them deeper into prayer. This five week course, perfect for adults (high school teens are encouraged to attend with a parent) will include a half hour DVD presentation, followed by discussion moderated by Bill Snyder. Built of Living Stones: Art, Architecture, and Worship In every church building, art and architecture become the joint work of the Holy Spirit and the local community. In our design, we prepare a place to receive God's Word and to enter more fully into communion with him. In Built of Living Stones, the bishops offer instruction on how to design places of worship that are dignified, beautiful, and "suited to sacred celebrations." The Committee on Divine Worship, a standing committee of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has the responsibility for all matters relating to the Liturgy. Issued on November 16, 2000, Built of Living Stones is the document that must be followed by every parish in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee that builds or renovates a place of worship. The Church Building is both the house of God on earth (domus Dei) and a house fit for the prayers of the saints (domus ecclesiae). 4 Page 4 MASS SCHEDULE: ASH WEDNESDAY February 13, 2013 As our Lenten journey begins this day, each participant receives a mark of ashes on the forehead as a symbol of one s need for conversion and repentance. Ash Wednesday is a day of universal fast and abstinence in the Church. 7:00 a.m. Mass w/ ashes 9:00 a.m. Mass w/ ashes 12:15 p.m. Service w/ ashes 5:00 p.m. Service w/ ashes 7:00 p.m. Mass w/ ashes WEEKDAY MASSES The Season of Lent offers us an opportunity to do something extra in our faith lives. Starting the day off with Mass would be a wonderful Lenten exercise and a reminder that we are invited to pray throughout the entire day. Monday Friday at 7:00 a.m. Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. SUNDAY MASSES As we journey together through the Season of Lent, we follow the Scripture and hear the story of Jesus journey toward the Cross. We culminate with the liturgies of Palm Sunday, Holy Week, and Easter. Come and walk with Jesus during this Lenten Season. Saturday at 5:15 p.m. Sunday at 7:30 a.m. Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Sunday at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at 5:00 p.m. (Spanish) Days of Fast & Abstinence Lent runs from Ash Wednesday until the Mass of the Lord s Supper on Holy Thursday. Alleluia is not sung or said from the beginning of Lent until the Easter Vigil. During Lent the altar should not be decorated with flowers, and musical instruments played only to give necessary support to the singing of the assembly. FAST & ABSTINENCE: Our most common form of liturgical fasting is the hour we spend before receiving communion, abstaining from food and drink. (This is all year, not only during the Lenten Season.) Most of us don t think about it anymore, but it used to be a threehour fast, and prior to that, a fast from midnight. This had the advantage of making communion the first food of the day, a real spiritual break fast. We abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent and we fast (eating only one full meal) on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Everyone age 14 and older is bound by the law of abstinence. Younger children are to be educated in its significance. ALL Catholics are expected to avoid meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent no matter how old they become. However, fasting binds from after one s 18th birthday until after the 59th. Catholics younger and older than that need not fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. Nonetheless, fasting is a praiseworthy penitential practice, even when it is not required. Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl This Lent, our parish will be joining millions of Catholics across the country by participating in CRS Operation Rice Bowl. Your family is invited to pick up a Rice Bowl packet in the back of the Chapel and join in this simple yet powerful Lenten practice. Catholic Relief Services Operation Rice Bowl invites us to pray with our families and faith communities, fast in solidarity with those who are hungry, learn about our brothers and sisters around the world, and give sacrificial contributions to help those in need. Reflection on Built of Living Stones: Art, Architecture, and Worship The living temple (God s holy people) and the church building itself are signs of God s presence on earth! Stations of the Cross You are invited to follow Christ s journey from His encounter with Pilate to His burial in the tomb. These 14 Stations offer an ideal meditation for our own journey through life. Stations will be held on all of the Fridays of Lent at the following times: Friday, February 15 Friday, February 22 Friday, March 1 Friday, March 8 Friday, March 15 7:30 p.m. Living Stations w/ Intermission & Hospitality Come and join the youth of our parish for this moving presentation of Living Stations. Friday, March 22 Confession, Penance, and Reconciliation Reconciliation is a Sacrament of healing in which Jesus Christ himself, through the actions of the priest, forgives the sins committed after Baptism. Penance remits sins and restores the friendship of God to the soul by means of the absolution of the priest. The priest has the power of absolving from the sins committed after Baptism, because Jesus Christ granted that power to the priests of His Church when He said: Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; whose sins you shall retain, they are retained. (John 20:22 23) Parish Reconciliation Service Wed., March 13 at 6:30 p.m. St. Francis de Sales A parish service with examination of conscience, followed by the individual Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered on Wednesday, March 13, at 6:30 p.m. Several priests will be available to help administer the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Please join us in offering up our sins and failings before the Lord. Palm Sunday of the Lord s Passion March 23/24, 2013 Today we celebrate Christ s entrance into Jerusalem to accomplish the Paschal Mystery of His death and resurrection. The memorial of this event is included in every Mass today. As part of this memorial, palm branches will be blessed and distributed at our regular Sunday Masses. Please pick up a palm on your way into the church today so that it can be blest! 5:15 p.m. Saturday 7:30 a.m. Sunday 9:00 a.m. Sunday 10:30 a.m. Sunday 5:00 p.m. Sunday (Spanish) The Mass of Chrism The Mass of Chrism is our annual celebration of the Blessing of the Holy Oils. We join with the bishops and priests of our Archdiocese, as we gather not only to bless oils and consecrate Chrism, but to pray earnestly for everyone and everything that these oils will anoint in the coming year. Tuesday, March 26 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist, Milwaukee THE SACRED TRIDUUM Pray that during this Lenten Season we will be able to sincerely experience the Love of Jesus and that this may be a time of renewal and hope for all of us. Together we can journey with Christ and pray for a stronger faith and trust in His promise to be with us always. The Sacred Triduum is the threeday celebration of the death and resurrection of Christ Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Vigil. The Church meets at times during those three days to remember what it is that Jesus has done for us. Lent often overshadows the Triduum, but the documents from Vatican Council II tell us: "Christ redeemed us all and gave perfect glory to God principally through His paschal mystery: dying He destroyed our death and rising He restored our life. CELEBRATE WITH US! COME JOIN US! During these days of Holy Week, the Church offers us many opportunities to deepen our faith and to experience the tremendous richness of our liturgical prayer and heritage. Come and experience the Washing of Feet, the Proclamation of the Passion, the Veneration of the Cross, the new Easter Fire Therefore the Easter Triduum of the passion and resurrection of Christ is the culmination of the entire liturgical year." General Norms for the Liturgical Year and the Calendar, # 18 Lent exists so that we can prepare ourselves for these three great days. What is remembered during these three days is so spectacular and miraculous that it takes the Church fifty days to celebrate it. From the close of Easter Sunday until Pentecost we celebrate with great joy that which Jesus has done for us. which lights our church and our new Paschal candle, the celebration of Light overcoming the darkness, the story of ancestors in faith, the blessing of water, the Litany of the Saints, the baptisms of our newest members and ultimately our celebration of Christ s victory over sin and We look at the Sacred Triduum as one single celebration that lasts for three days. We cannot separate the death of Jesus from His resurrection. We do not spend all of the three days in church, but at various times during those days, we are called to church to gather and remember together. When we are not in church, we are asked to keep the spirit of those days even in our homes, if possible. Those days are not days of "business as usual." death, which in turn brings salvation to the whole world. We have a journey to make and we have much to celebrate! Come and open your heart to the saving power of God! Join us in celebrating the most Sacred Days of the Church Year! All are welcome at this table.

7 HOLY THURSDAY Page 7 You are invited to share in the commemoration of the Lord s Last Supper and the beginning of His journey toward Calvary. At the Last Supper, on the night he was betrayed, our Savior instituted the Eucharistic Sacrifice of His body and blood. On this night we give thanks in a special way for the great gift of the Eucharist. We also celebrate the great mandatum by following the example of Jesus, as He washed the feet of His disciples, and to do as He has done. Following the Mass, the Eucharist will be transferred from the church into the chapel, where an altar of reservation will be set up. Please consider spending some time in private adoration before the Blessed Sacrament this night. Adoration will conclude at 10:00 p.m. with a very brief Night Prayer. Holy Thursday March 28, 2013 Mass at 7:00 p.m. followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until 10:00 p.m. GOOD FRIDAY According to the Church s ancient tradition, Mass is not celebrated today. Instead, all are invited to participate in the commemoration of the Lord s passion and death. As Christ carried His cross to His own death, we are invited to journey with Him, joining our own sufferings to His. As we listen to the reading of the Passion, venerate the cross and receive Holy Communion, we are grateful for God s greatest act of love. Good Friday March 29, 2013 Service with Adoration of the Holy Cross at 1:30 p.m. Service with Adoration of the Cross at 7:00 p.m. in Spanish HOLY SATURDAY Blessing of Food for the Easter Table March 30 at 10:00 a.m. In preparation for Easter, baskets filled with customary foods are blessed in church for the first meal following the 40 day fast. As an extension of the joyful fellowship of the Lord s Table, families traditionally share this blessed food after celebrating the Mass of Easter and receiving Holy Communion. Thus, the Eucharist emerges as the original sacred meal, breaking the fast and opening the doors of the home to festive Resurrection fellowship with the Lord. EASTER VIGIL You are invited to participate in this most holy night that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Our journey with Christ through Lent ends with a celebration of new life. Christ triumphs over death and we share in His great triumph. As we bless the Easter fire and Easter candle, we will also celebrate the gift of Baptism and through it our entrance into the Christian family. It is on this night that we celebrate the great Sacraments of Initiation as we welcome the newest members of our church: Our newest members celebrate the Sacraments of Baptism, Remember to sign up on the board in the back of the chapel to help with our Holy Week and Easter liturgies. We need your help! Confirmation and First Holy Communion and we welcome our R.C.I.A. candidates into full Communion with the Roman Catholic Church. This is the night for our whole parish family to gather around our newest members and offer our support in their journey of faith! Easter Vigil March 30, 2013 Mass at 8:00 p.m. Beginning with the lighting of the Easter Fire and the Service of Light There is no 5:15 p.m. Saturday Mass tonight. The celebration of Holy Saturday and the Easter Vigil takes precedence over all other celebrations.

8 Year of Faith Steeplechase: A Lenten Day of Retreat for Young Adult Catholics Young married, single, and religious Catholics of college age through their 30 s are invited to a special Steeplechase Day of Retreat on Saturday, February 23, 2013, from Noon to 9:00 pm. Your guide will be Fr. Luke Strand, Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. Travelling by coach bus, participants will make a talk and tour pilgrimage of faith to various Milwaukee area churches. This faith on the move journey will include a coffee break at Alterra Coffee House and dinner at La Fuente Mexican Restaurant. There is no cost for the event. Participants will pay for their own coffee and dinner expenses. Please register online by February 9, 2013 by going to click John Paul II Center, and click Year of Faith Lenten Retreat Days. This event is co sponsored by the Office of Evangelization, Nazareth Project, and the Office of Vocations, Archdiocese of Milwaukee. EASTER SEASON The fifty days from Easter Sunday to Pentecost are celebrated in joyful exultation as one feast day, or better, as one great Sunday. These above all others are the days for the singing of the Alleluia. (General Norms, 22) The first eight days of the Easter Season make up the octave of Easter and are celebrated as solemnities of the Lord. At Mass on Easter Sunday, a double alleluia is added to the dismissal and its response. The sequence, Victimae Paschali, is mandatory on Easter Sunday, and is sung following the second reading, before the singing of the Alleluia!
