1 RECITATION RULES & GUIDELINES 1. The goal of this competition is to encourage the Sunday school students to learn the Lord s Prayer, Nicene Creed, and Psalms Classes and the corresponding recitation and time allotment are as follows: CLASS PASSAGE TIME ALLOTED Kindergarten The Lord s Prayer* 1 ½ minutes Grades 1 and 2 Psalms 23:1-6* 2 minutes Grades 3 and 4 Nicene Creed* 3 minutes *The specified version for each passage is provided later in this document 3. Each student must recite their passage in the specified version. The Lord s Prayer and Psalms 23 will be recited based on the New King James Version. The Nicene Creed will be recited based on the Mar Thoma liturgy. Please note the changes from the one in our printed Order of Worship. 4. The passage must be recited from memory. Note cards or any other aides will not be allowed. 5. The competition will be graded on the following criteria: Presentation Accuracy of words, and adherence to time limit Clear pronunciation of the words, voice strength, and stage presence. 6. Time limit will be strictly enforced (a 30 second warning will be signaled by the judges). 7. Scoring of the judges will be final.

2 The Lord s Prayer New King James Version This is the passage that grades Kindergarten will recite for competition. Participants will be asked to recite this passage orally. All participants must learn the passage in the version shown below (NKJV). Other versions of this passage will not be given credit. Our Father, in heaven, hallowed be Your name; Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors; and do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

3 Psalm 23 - New King James Version This is the passage that grades 1 and 2 will recite for competition. Participants will be asked to recite this passage orally. All participants must learn the passage in the version shown below (NKJV). Other versions of this passage will not be given credit. 1 The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. 3 He restores my soul; He leads me in the paths of righteousness For His name s sake. 4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me; in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil; My cup runs over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

5 Nicene Creed This is the prayer that grades 3 and 4 will recite for competition. Participants will be asked to recite this prayer orally. All participants must learn the prayer in the version shown below. Other versions of this passage will not be given credit. We believe in one true God, the Father Almighty. Maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, begotten of the Father before all the world. Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, Being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made, who for us and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary, and was made man. He was crucified also for us in the day of Pontius Pilate. Suffered and died was buried. The third day He rose again by His Father s holy will, ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead and of His kingdom, there will be no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father, who with the Father and Son together is worshipped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets and apostles. We believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic church; we acknowledge one baptism for the remission of sins and look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the new life of the world to come.
