We thank you and praise God for your loyalty to Christ, your devotion to Mary Immaculate, your total surrender to the divine will. In the midst of painful trials, you had the courage to say: For Jesus Christ I am prepared to suffer still more. Generous to the end, you volunteered to lay down your life for a prisoner sentenced to die by starvation. With confidence in your power of intercession, we now present our needs to you. (Here mention your prayer request.) Obtain for us also to abide always in God s friendship, that we may glorify Him with you in heaven for all eternity. Amen.

6 Page 6 The Life of Jesus Luke 3:15-16, The people were filled with expectation, and all were asking in their hearts whether John might be the Christ. John answered them all, saying, "I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire." After all the people had been baptized and Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, "You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased." IS GOD CALLING YOU TO SERVE OUR PARISH AS A EUCHARISTIC MINISTER OR LECTOR? If you are a practicing Catholic, registered at our parish and interested in becoming an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion or Lector, please contact the Parish Office at The need is great for new volunteers to serve in these important ministries. Each week the Word of God proclaimed to us in the readings at Sunday Mass are discussed and shared for a deeper understanding of how God is speaking to us. Handouts of the Scriptures are distributed so there s no need to bring anything except for yourself and a friend. We look forward to seeing you! HIS WORD TODAY The Baptism of the Lord uary 13, 2019 The grace of God has appeared, saving all, and training us to reject godless ways and worldly desires and to live temperately, justly and devoutly in this age, and to await the blessed hope, the appearance of the glory of our great God nd of our savior Jesus Christ, who gave himself for us to deliver us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for himself a people of his own, eager to do what is good. How fortunate for Titus to receive an encouraging letter from St. Paul. As we bring the Christmas season to a close as Jesus baptism takes place, we too are encouraged to make the instruction our own. Yes, Jesus has come and still lives among us. We are challenged each day to abandon godless ways and focus on keeping our eyes on Jesus. If life was difficult for St. Paul s friends, how much more challenging it is for us, surrounded by the internet, porn, material and consumer attractions, drawing us in a different direction. How clear are St. Paul s words asking us to live temperately, when so many have nothing, to live justly, in a society which wishes to get ahead and put others down, and devoutly, when many look down on people with religious devotion, customs and traditions. St. Paul knew his society and we are so aware of ours. Why not take the virtues Paul recommends and meditate on one each day. May this help us to become eager to do what is good. (Rev. William J. Reilly)

7 Page 7 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: 13 St. Hilary, Bishop & Doctor of the Church 14 St. Gregory Nazianzen 15 St. Ita (Ida), Virgin St. Paul the Hermit 16 St. Marcellus, Pope St. Berard and Companions, Martyrs 17 St. Anthony of Egypt, Abbot, Founder of Monasticism 18 Sts. Volusian and Deicolus, Bishop & Abbot St. Charles of Sezze 19 St. Wulstan, Bishop ST. HILARY OF POITIERS Bishop & Doctor of the Church St. Hilary was born at Poitiers, France, of one of the most noble families of Gaul. He was brought up as a pagan. His own philosophic inquiries and the reading of the Bible led him to the knowledge of the true faith and the reception of the Sacrament of Baptism. He then regulated his life according to the rules of the faith he had emb r a c e d, a n d t h o u g h a l a y m a n, zealously endeavored to confirm others in true Christianity. His wife, to whom he had been married before his conversion and by whom he had a daughter named Apra, was still living when he was chosen Bishop of Poitiers, a bout the year 353. According to the practice which then existed, married men were sometimes promoted to the episcopacy, as St. Jerome clearly testifies, they ever lived in continence. The Arian heresy principally occupied his pen, and he became one of the most strenuous defenders of the Divinity of Jesus Christ. At the Council of Seleucia, in 360, he bravely defended the decrees o f N e c a e a, a n d t h e n r e t i r e d t o Constantinople. St. Hilary died at Poitiers in the year 398. He was the mildest of men, full of condescension and affability to all; but against Emperor Constantius, who showed himself an enemy of the Church, he used the severest language. He is the patron saint against snake bites. ST. CHARLES OF SEZZE Franciscan St. Charles thought that God was calling him to be a missionary in India, but he never got there. God had something better f o r t h i s 1 7 t h - c e n t u r y successor to Brother Juniper. Born in Sezze, southeast of Rome, St. Charles was inspired by the lives of S a l v a t o r H o r t a a n d P a s c h a l Baylon to become a Franciscan; he did that in St. Charles tells us in his autobiography, Our Lord put in my heart a determination to become a lay brother with a great desire to be poor and to beg alms for his love. St. Charles served as cook, porter, sacristan, gardener and beggar at various friaries in Italy. In some ways, he was an accident waiting to happen. He once started a huge fire in the kitchen when the oil in which he was frying onions burst into flames. One story shows how thoroughly St. Charles adopted the spirit of Saint Francis. The superior ordered St. Charles then porter to give food only to traveling friars who came to the door. St. Charles obeyed this direction; simultaneously the alms to the friars decreased. St. Charles convinced the superior the two facts were related. When the friars resumed giving goods to all who asked at the door, alms to the friars increased also. At the direction of his confessor, St. Charles wrote his autobiography, The Grandeurs of the Mercies of God. He also wrote several other spiritual books. He made good use of his various spiritual directors throughout the years; they helped him discern which of Charles ideas or ambitions were from God. Charles himself was sought out for spiritual advice. The dying Pope Clement IX called Charles to his bedside for a blessing. Charles had a firm sense of God s providence. Father Severino Gori has said, By word and example he recalled in all the need of pursuing only that which is eternal (Leonard Perotti, St. Charles of Sezze: An Autobiography, page 215). He died at San Francesco a Ripa in Rome and was buried there. Pope John XXIII canonized him in 1959.

8 Page 8 Our Faith A NEW YEAR S RESOLUTION WORTH KEEPING It s that time of year again. Time to make New Year s resolutions. Actually, that s the easy part. The hard part as we all know, is sticking to them. So much so that many people decide never to make resolutions again, versus risk failure in keeping them. But yet, as each year ends, and a new year approaches, we start to believe and hope for the possibility to improve our lives, that change is possible, that quite possibility, we re not going to be stuck in the same old rut again this year. While I love the optimism of New Year s resolutions, unfortunately, the enthusiasm and hope often fades within weeks, and our efforts at self-improvement come to a whimpering end. Why? Many times we either take on too many resolutions or for the ones we do take on, our hearts are not really in them as much as we had thought. Perhaps they don t last because they are more superficial in nature and lack a depth that can effect a real change within one s soul. I m going to lose weight. I m going to exercise every day. I m going to travel more. I m going to get more out of debt. For example, these resolutions above are not bad resolutions they are good. My point is, perhaps we can try resolutions this year that are more interior and lasting more character-based. Perhaps as a first step, a good (and maybe the only) resolution this year would be to make an I mportant goal a goal that is much deeper and life changing than learning to swing dance, or travel to Switzerland. Some examples of goals could be to work on an important defect that for us is noticeable or even noticeable to others. I am going to try to be more patient this year especially with myself and those closest to me. I am going to work on my willingness to reach out to others in need past my comfort zone. I am going to be more kind to my neighbors, and always give them the benefit of the doubt, instead of judging them, which I so easily fall into. These are just a few examples of goals that are extremely worthwhile and will bring a peace and happiness to you and those around you. We should have a willingness to take legitimate joy in those things that God has given to us, and a willingness to sacrifice those things that God is asking of us; and if we work hard and do our best to be faithful to these New Year s resolutions, we will develop habits that lead to holiness. Habits that will lead to a true, sincere love for God. Habits that will lead to a better and more authentic me. When we live for God and for those around us, we can t help but become a better person. Because that is what God desires from each of us; and if you succeed, you ll look back next year and realize that not only have you done much better in sticking to a New Year s resolution, you ll realize that you re a different person a better person. And you won t get that from sticking with a Paleo diet, or using your elliptical everyday. So perhaps this year we can focus on creating long-lasting habits habits of virtue that will lead to a whole lifetime with God as our center, versus attempting to reach short-term goals that come and go with our changing likes and dislikes. The person that spends their life honoring and glorifying God each day finds His perfect peace, along with a firm and lasting happiness. Because a relationship with God means so much more than any earthly accomplishment, more than any human praise, more than any worldly satisfaction. There can be no better resolution in our lives, than to spend it more with Him and according to His desire for us. Peace and God bless you all for a wonderful New Year ahead! ( Scott)
