We thank you and praise God for your loyalty to Christ, your devotion to Mary Immaculate, your total surrender to the divine will. In the midst of painful trials, you had the courage to say: For Jesus Christ I am prepared to suffer still more. Generous to the end, you volunteered to lay down your life for a prisoner sentenced to die by starvation. With confidence in your power of intercession, we now present our needs to you. (Here mention your prayer request.) Obtain for us also to abide always in God s friendship, that we may glorify Him with you in heaven for all eternity. Amen.

4 Page 4 P A R I S H H A P P E N I N G S ST. MAXIMILIAN VOLUNTEER CORNER Time for Rebuilding.. Using our time, talent and treasure to build community at St. Maximilian Kolbe Welcome to our newest page of the bulletin. Beginning this week a special page of our weekly bulletin will be devoted to talking about upcoming church and social events at St. Maximilian and our need to ask parishioners to volunteer from time-to-time with parish-related events. Our parish family is blessed to have many parishioners and friends who have given much of their time and talent in helping us with various events and so we wish to thank all who have given so much of themselves these past years to help foster a spirit of hospitality. Now its time to build on our successes as we plan for more fun-filled events. But we need your help in planning events that parishioners enjoy. That s why we are starting a new committee called The St. Maximilian Events Planning Committee. Our goal is to plan events that parishioners might enjoy (dinners, entertainment, lectures and other enjoyable events) and to discuss ways of how to bring them about. So if you have thought of something that you d like to see happen at St. Maximilian or if you have time and would like to join our committee in helping to bring about these new ideas, you are cordially invited to attend an informational meeting: Parish Planning Committee: Monday, February 4 from 1:00-3:00 PM (Parish Hall) ST. MAXIMILIAN HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE We would also like to start a Hospitality Committee for the parish. This special group of volunteers would be available to take care of the needs of setting up for smaller functions that fall outside the realm of events planned by our Event Planning Committee. Such functions would include: coffee socials after Mass, small luncheons, church meetings and the like. With the exception of food and drink we have streamlined our methods of ensuring that sufficient supplies are always on hand for various meetings. All this and more will be discussed at our informational meeting: Hospitality Committee: Wednesday, Feb 6th, 2019 from 1:00-3:00 PM (Parish Hall) If you are interested in joining one of the committees but are unable to attend please call the parish office at (732) and leave your name and telephone number for us to send you further information. At St. Maximilian we are blessed to have a large community with diverse interests where we can come together and enjoy each other s company in a beautiful church and spacious parish hall. As we begin this New Year together, let s continue to build on our tradition of friendship and service to one another and our community. God bless, Fr. Vince

5 Page 5 P A R I S H H A P P E N I N G S NEW TUESDAY BIBLE STUDY Beginning Tuesday March 12 we are pleased to introduce a New Bible Study Series, THE BIBLE TIMELINE: THE STORY OF SALVATION In this Bible study we will be reading 14 books of the Bible and discover the amazing story woven throughout Scripture. We ll learn how the key people, places, and events in the Bible fit together to reveal God s plan for humanity Study the Bible from a Catholic perspective and see how our faith is rooted in Sacred Scripture, See how the events of the Old Testament are fulfilled in the New Testament by Christ and the Church Gain a greater appreciation for the Scripture readings we hear during Mass See how God reveals himself to us through Scripture and learn how God s Word applies our life today The series hosted by Jeff Cavins, Tim Gray, and Sarah Christmyer consists of minute presentations. Each participant will need to register for the study class and purchase a Study Set at a cost of $25 that includes a fold-out Bible timeline chart, maps and charts, bookmark, study questions and talk notes for the video presentation. Beginning this weekend, parishioners and guests are invited to register for the Bible Study at the registration desk in the vestibule of the church. An announcement will be made when your Study Set is available. We suggest that you review the material before the fist session on March 12. Payment can be made when you pick up your Study Set. Since the Bible Study is for several weeks not all of our participants may be able to attend all sessions. The DVD for a particular study lesson can be made available to view at home for 24 hours and then returned to the parish for others to view. This can be a wonderful and meaningful way to prepare ourselves for Lent and rejoice in the beautiful season of Easter as we grow together in faith. Please feel free to contact me should you have any questions concerning our new Bible Study presentation. Fr. 8 Page 8 The Life of Jesus Luke 1:1-4, 4:14-21 Since many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the events that have been fulfilled among us, just as those who were eyewitnesses from the beginning and ministers of the word have handed them down to us, I too have decided, after investigating everything accurately anew, to write it down in an orderly sequence for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may realize the certainty of the teachings you have received. Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, "Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing." SUNDAY SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS Please feel free to drop in our weekly Sunday Reflection Group offered on Thursday from 1:00 2:30 P.M. in the Chapel. Each week the Word of God proclaimed to us in the readings at Sunday Mass are discussed and shared for a deeper understanding of how God is speaking to us. Handouts of the Scriptures are distributed so there s no need to bring anything except for yourself and a friend. We look forward to seeing you! FIRST SATURDAY MASS AT ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE We are very happy to announce that beginning Saturday, February 2nd, 2019 and continuing on the First Saturday of every month, a Mass to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be celebrated at 8:30 AM in the chapel. This monthly Mass honors the Blessed Mother s request made to Lucia of Fatima (one of the three children whom the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared). Accordingly, she requested what are now known as the First Saturday Devotions to make reparation for blasphemies and offenses against her Immaculate Heart and for world peace. The Five Saturday Devotion has four parts all four should be made in a spirit of reparation for blasphemy and ingratitude and for peace in the world. First, one should go to confession, generally eight days before or after the First Saturday of the month; Second, one should receive Holy Communion on the First Saturday of the month; Third, recite five decades of the Rosary; and fourth, meditate for 15 minutes on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary. There are great benefits for those who comply with this request. Our Lady told Sister Lucia she would assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who on the first Saturdays of five consecutive months confess, receive Holy Communion, pray a rosary, and keep me company for a quarter of an hour meditating on the 15 mysteries with the intention of offering reparation.

9 Page 9 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: Jan 27 St. Angela Merici, Virgin Jan 28 St. Thomas Aquinas, Priest & Doctor of the Church Jan 29 St. Gildas the Wise, Abbot Jan 30 St. Bathildis, Widow Jan 31 St. John Bosco, Priest Feb 1 St. Bridgid (Bride) of Ireland, Virgin Feb 2 The Presentation of the Lord ST. THOMAS AQUINAS Priest & Doctor of the Church St. Thomas, born toward the end of the year 1226, was the son of Landulph, Count of Aquino, who, when St. Thomas was five years old, placed him under the care of the Benedectines of Monte Casino. His teachers were surprised at the progress he made, for he surpassed all his fellow pupils in learning as well as in the practice of virtue. When he became of age to choose his state of life, St. Thomas renounced the things of this world and resolved to enter the Order of St. Dominic in spite of the opposition of his family. In 1243, at the age of 17, he joined the Dominicans of Naples. Some members of his family resorted to all manner of means over a two year period to break his constancy. They even went so far as to send an impure woman to tempt him; but all their efforts were in vain and St. Thomas persevered in his vocation. As a reward for his fidelity, God conferred upon him the gift of perfect chastity, which has merited for him the title of the Angelic Doctor. After making his profession at Naples, he studied at Cologne under the celebrated St. Albert the Great. Here he was nicknamed the Dumb Ox because of his silent ways and huge size, but he was really a brilliant student. At the age of 22, he was appointed to teach in the same city. At the same time he also began to publish his first works. After four years he was sent to Paris. The saint was then a priest. At the age of 31 he received his doctorate. At Paris he was honored with the friendship of the King, St. Louis, with whom he frequently dined. In 1261 Urban IV called him to Rome, where he was appointed to teach, but he positively declined to accept any ecclesiastical dignity. St. Thomas not only wrote, but he preached often and with the greatest fruit. Clement IV offered him the Archbishopric of Naples which he also refused. He left the great monument of his learning, the Summa Theologica, unfinished, for on his way to the Second Council of Lyons, ordered there by Gregory X, he fell sick, and died at the Cistercian monastery of Fossa Nuova in PRAYER TO CHRIST IN THE WORLD Lord Jesus, let us realize that every action of ours no matter how small or how secular enables us to be in touch with You. Let our interest lie in created things - but only in absolute dependence upon your presence in them. Let us pursue You and You alone through the reality of created things. Let this be our prayer - to become closer to You by becoming more human. Let us become a tree branch on the vine that is You, a branch that bears much fruit. let us accept you in our lives in the way it pleases you to come into them: as Truth, to be spoken, as Life to be lived, as Love, to be followed, as Joy, to be given, as Peace, to be spread about, as Sacrifice, to be offered, among our relatives as friends, among our neighbors and all people. Amen.
