1 Blessed Sacrament Spring 2011 Edition Council of Catholic Women A New Member! COUNCIL CLIPS CCW Coming Attractions President s Message Winter seems to just linger on, despite what Punxsutawney Phil said! For those of us who have had enough of the cold and white stuff, CCW has a lot planned to brighten up our spring! By the time you read this, we will have held our February 28 meeting focused on CYBER SAFETY. I hope all who joined us learned something new and valuable to protect our families in the age of the internet! All of us face different types of adversity in our lives maybe it s an illness, or a relationship challenge, or a work situation. Sometimes our fear of those situations can be challenging to manage. Our March program will welcome Melissa Gasnic Cloeter, who will speak of her personal experience in Overcoming Fear, and the role her faith played in helping her to face that fear and use it to achieve success in her personal and professional life. Melissa Gasnick Cloeter is Co-Founder of Entrepreneur Expose and the President of WINC- The Women s Initiative Network & Connection, LLC. WINC, founded in 2007, is a consulting company that specializes in Workforce Diversity, Marketing Strategies, and an Angel Investment Networking Group that invests solely in Women-Owned businesses. Entrepreneur Expose is a grassroots effort to help women entrepreneurs who want to start a business or grow an existing business. During April we will again present Mary s Way of the Cross on Friday, April 15, the same day the Rosary Society holds its annual Fish Fry. Come eat some great fish and then join us for the Stations of the Cross! On Monday of Holy Week, April 18, John Schweska will join us to present The Cross Pathway to Wisdom and Healing. John is Assistant Program Director-Crisis Outreach at Catholic Charities, and a Lay Passionist who has worked with the poor and dying in the inner city, has counseled emotionally challenged and displaced children and families, and had responded to disasters such as the 2004 tsunami. He has also written two books, Following the Light of the Cross and At the Cross with Mary. We will wrap our year up in May with a Member s Social, at which we will present the annual Ellie Schifano Scholarship to one of our parish s high school seniors. Be sure to check elsewhere in the newsletter for more information on how to apply for this award! In Christ Michele Welcome Eleanor Fahey who joined CCW at our February meeting. We re glad to have you with us! 2 March Meeting Monday, March 28 th at 7:00pm Overcoming Fear We all face fear in our lives. Melissa Gasnic Cloeter will speak at our March meeting of her personal experience in Overcoming Fear, and the role her faith played in helping her to face that fear and use it to achieve success in her personal and professional life. Melissa is Co-Founder of Entrepreneur Expose and the President of WINC- The Women s Initiative Network & Connection, LLC. Mary s Way of the Cross Friday, April 15 th 7:30pm A Spiritual Lenten Devotion You are invited to follow the Way of the Cross as seen through the eyes of our Blessed Mother. The Blessed Sacrament Council of Catholic Women invites our parish community to join us as we participate in this traditional Lenten devotion which offers a different point of view. It is hoped that we will all come away with a sense of both prayerful repentance and redemption as we walk with Mary as she follows her son Jesus' last steps. Following the stations, Benediction of the Holy Eucharist will take place. The Church will then be open until 9:00 pm for further adoration and private prayer. Ellie Schifano Memorial Scholarship The Blessed Sacrament Council of Catholic Women is once again sponsoring a $ college scholarship named in honor of one of our most beloved members, Ellie Schifano. If you know a deserving young woman or man who is a 2011 high school graduating senior and has demonstrated service to the parish and to the surrounding community please encourage her or him to apply for this scholarship. Applicants for this scholarship must be members of our parish. High School Seniors interested in applying should submit three pages that include: 1) a summary in outline form of their service contributions to the parish as well as the surrounding community 2) reference contact information (name and phone of adults involved in service activities like troop leader or youth group advisor) 3) one-page essay written by the student describing the impact that service has had on their life. All applications must be typed and either mailed to Mary Allen, c/o Blessed Sacrament CCW, 20 Blossom Drive, Basking Ridge, NJ or sent as a Word file attachment to allen_20blossom@msn.com. The deadline for applications is Sunday, May 1st and the winner will be presented with their scholarship at our May CCW Membership meeting. If you are interested in participating on our scholarship selection committee or have any questions, please contact Mary Allen at
3 April Meeting Monday, April 18 at 7:00pm The Cross Path to Wisdom and Healing Monday, April 18 th begins Holy Week the week that leads us to Easter Sunday. To put us in a spiritual disposition, the CCW (Council of Catholic Women) has arranged to have John Schweska speak at their monthly meeting. John is a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, a lay Passionist, and, as a member of the Catholic Charity Solidarity Team, has been involved in fund-raising and dedication of churches in India which were needed to replace those destroyed by the tsunami. John is a NJ licensed Professional Counselor and a certified NJ Disaster Response Crisis Counselor. He has worked with both children and adults in that capacity. Mr. Schweska is the author of two published biographies and studies on St. Gabriel Possenti, Passionist youth and cleric, titled: Following the Light of the Cross and At the Cross with Mary. These were presented to the Venerable John Paul II at a special Audience in Rome. The topic John has chosen to present to the parishioners of Blessed Sacrament on April 18 th is: The Cross Path to Wisdom and Healing. The program is open to all parishioners and will begin at 7:30 PM following a short business meeting conducted by the CCW. This promises to be an excellent way to begin our Holy Week preparation. Where is she now? Have you ve been wondering why Rosemary Miano has not been to a meeting lately? It is because she and her husband Jeff have moved. They relocated to their original home in Raleigh NC only to find that Jeff had a great job offer in Kansas. So they packed up again and were off to see the wizard. Rosemary s new address is 204 W. Meadowsweet Court, Andover, KS Her cell is We will miss her and wish them luck. She will be glad to hear from you so drop a line or call. SHIP Soup Kitchen Reminder Thank you all for your support for the Soup Kitchen all year long. Helping hands and food donations are very much appreciated by the guests who join us for lunch there once a month. We operate 12 months a year on the 4 th Monday of the month at St. John s Episcopal Church on High Street in Somerville. And don t forget us over the summer months. Hunger does not take a vacation. To volunteer, please call JoAnne Bixler, jjobix@verizon.net. 3
