We thank you and praise God for your loyalty to Christ, your devotion to Mary Immaculate, your total surrender to the divine will. In the midst of painful trials, you had the courage to say: For Jesus Christ I am prepared to suffer still more. Generous to the end, you volunteered to lay down your life for a prisoner sentenced to die by starvation. With confidence in your power of intercession, we now present our needs to you. (Here mention your prayer request.) Obtain for us also to abide always in God s friendship, that we may glorify Him with you in heaven for all eternity. Amen.

4 Page 4 ST. MAXIMILIAN VOLUNTEER CORNER Time for Rebuilding.. Using our time, talent and treasure to build community at St. Maximilian Kolbe Welcome to our newest page of the bulletin. Beginning this week a special page of our weekly bulletin will be devoted to talking about upcoming church and social events at St. Maximilian and our need to ask parishioners to volunteer from time-to-time with parish-related events. Our parish family is blessed to have many parishioners and friends who have given much of their time and talent in helping us with various events and so we wish to thank all who have given so much of themselves these past years to help foster a spirit of hospitality. Now its time to build on our successes as we plan for more fun-filled events. But we need your help in planning events that parishioners enjoy. That s why we are starting a new committee called The St. Maximilian Events Planning Committee. Our goal is to plan events that parishioners might enjoy (dinners, entertainment, lectures and other enjoyable events) and to discuss ways of how to bring them about. So if you have thought of something that you d like to see happen at St. Maximilian or if you have time and would like to join our committee in helping to bring about these new ideas, you are cordially invited to attend an informational meeting: Parish Planning Committee: Monday, February 4 from 1:00-3:00 PM (Parish Hall) ST. MAXIMILIAN HOSPITALITY COMMITTEE We would also like to start a Hospitality Committee for the parish. This special group of volunteers would be available to take care of the needs of setting up for smaller functions that fall outside the realm of events planned by our Event Planning Committee. Such functions would include: coffee socials after Mass, small luncheons, church meetings and the like. With the exception of food and drink we have streamlined our methods of ensuring that sufficient supplies are always on hand for various meetings. All this and more will be discussed at our informational meeting: Hospitality Committee: Wednesday, Feb 6th, 2019 from 1:00-3:00 PM (Parish Hall) If you are interested in joining one of the committees but are unable to attend please call the parish office at (732) and leave your name and telephone number for us to send you further information. At St. Maximilian we are blessed to have a large community with diverse interests where we can come together and enjoy each other s company in a beautiful church and spacious parish hall. As we begin this New Year together, let s continue to build on our tradition of friendship and service to one another and our community. God bless, Fr. Vince

7 Page 7 The Life of Jesus John 2:1-11 There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to him, "They have no wine." And Jesus said to her, "Woman, how does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come." His mother said to the servers, "Do whatever he tells you." Now there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told the them, "Fill the jars with water." So they filled them to the brim. Then he told them, "Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter." So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that had become wine, without knowing where it came from although the servers who had drawn the water knew, the headwaiter called the bridegroom and said to him, "Everyone serves good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now." Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. SUNDAY SCRIPTURE REFLECTIONS Please feel free to drop in our weekly Sunday Reflection Group offered on Thursday from 1:00 2:30 P.M. in the Chapel. Each week the Word of God proclaimed to us in the readings at Sunday Mass are discussed and shared for a deeper understanding of how God is speaking to us. Handouts of the Scriptures are distributed so there s no need to bring anything except for yourself and a friend. We look forward to seeing you! FIRST SATURDAY MASS AT ST. MAXIMILIAN KOLBE We are very happy to announce that beginning Saturday, February 2nd, 2019 and continuing on the First Saturday of every month, a Mass to the Immaculate Heart of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be celebrated at 8:30 AM in the chapel. This monthly Mass honors the Blessed Mother s request made to Lucia of Fatima (one of the three children whom the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared). Accordingly, she requested what are now known as the First Saturday Devotions to make reparation for blasphemies and offenses against her Immaculate Heart and for world peace. The Five Saturday Devotion has four parts all four should be made in a spirit of reparation for blasphemy and ingratitude and for peace in the world. First, one should go to confession, generally eight days before or after the First Saturday of the month; Second, one should receive Holy Communion on the First Saturday of the month; Third, recite five decades of the Rosary; and fourth, meditate for 15 minutes on the mysteries of the Holy Rosary. There are great benefits for those who comply with this request. Our Lady told Sister Lucia she would assist at the hour of death with the graces necessary for salvation, all those who on the first Saturdays of five consecutive months confess, receive Holy Communion, pray a rosary, and keep me company for a quarter of an hour meditating on the 15 mysteries with the intention of offering reparation.

8 Page 8 LIVES OF THE SAINTS Occasionally in this space will appear a short article covering the lives of the saints, especially with reference to those saints whose likeness appear on the stained glass windows in the church and chapel, or whose statue is present in the chapel area or the candle room area. LIVES OF THE SAINTS May the wisdom of the Saints inspire us in our daily lives: Jan 20 St. Fabian, Pope & Martyr St. Sebastian, Martyr Jan 21 St. Agnes, Virgin & Martyr Jan 22 St. Vincent of Saragossa, Deacon & Martyr St. Vincent Pallotti, Priest Jan 23 St. Ildefonsus, Bishop St. Marianne Cope, Religious Jan 24 St. Francis De Sales, Bishop & Doctor of the Church Jan 25 The Conversion of St. Paul, Apostle Jan 26 Sts. Timothy & Titus, Bishops ST. AGNES Virgin & Martyr St. Agnes suffered martyrdom during the bloody persecution of the Emperor Diocletian around 304 at the age of 13 and became one of the best known and most highly regarded of the Roman martrys. Her name is still retained in the First Eucharistic Prayer for Holy Mass. The Acts of her Passion, which date back only to the 5th century, are considered to be not entirely reliable but they do tell us something about her. The young noblemen of Rome, attracted to her wealth and beauty, vied with one another in endeavoring to obtain her hand in marriage, but she refused them all, saying that she had chosen a spouse who could not be seen with mortal eyes. Her suitors, in hope of shaking her constancy, accused her of being a Christian. She was brought before a judge and remained unswayed by either his kindness or his threats. Fires were kindled, instruments of torture were placed before her eyes, but immovable in her constancy, she surveyed them with heroic calmness. She was sent to a house of prostitution, but the sight of her inspired such awe that not one of the wicked youths of the city dared approach her. One, bolder than others, was suddenly struck with blindness and he fell trembling. The youthful saint came forth from this den of infamy uncontaminated in mind and body, and still a pure spouse of Christ. The most prominent among her suitors was now so enraged that he incited the judge still more against her. The heroic virgin was condemned to be beheaded. She went to the place of execution, says St. Ambrose, more cheerfully than others go to their wedding. Amid the tears of the spectators the instrument of death fell, and she went to meet the Immortal Spouse whom she had loved better than her life. She was buried on the Via Nomentana, and Constantine erected a church in her honor. EVERY LIFE IS WORTH LIVING Heavenly Father, thank You for the precious gift of life. Help us to cherish and protect this gift, even in the midst of fear, pain, and suffering. Give us love for all people, especially the most vulnerable, and help us bear witness to the truth that every life is worth living. Grant us the humility to accept help when we are in need, and teach us to be merciful to all. Through our words and actions, may others encounter the outstretched hands of Your mercy. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen. Never tire of firmly speaking out in defense of life from its conception. Christ is with you: be not afraid! - St. Pope John Paul II
