1 Our Mission AUGUST 23, st Sunday in Ordinary Time United in Christ through Bapsm, our parish is a Catholic community of diverse cultures and experiences. Through educaon and worship, we share the word and celebrate the Sacraments. We welcome and embrace all to join us in the praise & service of God. KEEPING OUR COMMITMENTS CHURCH ADDRESS: 923 S. LA BREA AVENUE LOS ANGELES CA SCHEDULE OF MASSES Sunday 8:00am, 10:00am & 12:00pm Saturday 8:30am, 5:00pm (Vigil) Weekday: 9:00am (Monday-Friday) Wednesday: 6:30pm In the musical Fiddler on the Roof, the husband, Tevye, whose marriage was arranged years and years before, wants to know if his wife really loves him. Was their marriage just an arrangement, a deal? Did his wife, after all these years, ever love him? Does she still? We need to know if our loving commitments stick. We need to be reminded and reaffirmed. In the first reading, Joshua, Moses successor, needed to know if the people would remain faithful to their covenant with the Lord. Joshua was going to lead them to a new life a settled life. Would they be faithful? Jesus, who identified himself as the very life of his disciples life, needed to know: Will you also go away or will you stay? We do not often see Jesus this vulnerable. Peter and the apostles chose to stay. What will we do? J. S. Paluch Co. 2 Joshua addressed all the people: If it does not please you to serve the LORD, decide today whom you will serve As for me and my household, we will serve the LORD (Jud. 24). Dear Parishioners and Visitors: A MESSAGE FROM FR. TRUC For those of you who are still on vacation with your family/friends, may your summer 2015 continue to be enjoyable and relaxing. May you encounter God and His peace through nature and strengthening of relationship with one another. Welcome Back CCS Faculty, Staff, Parents and Students Believe it or not, CCS has just completed the first week of school. Welcome back our faculty and staff at CCSV. There are continuing to be a lot of excitements and anxieties for everyone in our campus including the parents of our students. Please keep our CCS parents, students, faculty and staff especially Ms. Kipp, our principal in your prayers for a great, successful, and faith-filled year. Gratitude for Your Responses Participating in the Year of Consecrated Life Assisting the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet with $ & Society of the Sacred Heart Sisters with $ As you know, this year our universal Church celebrates and honors all religious brothers and sisters for their services to the world. On behalf of our parish, I am thankful again for the leadership of Rick Ruhland and Rina Schembri (who are members of our PLC) for coordinating this effort through visiting and communicating with the various religious communities in the areas. During the week, I had a meeting with them to discuss the distribution of the benefactor s donation. Through the commitment and support of our parish, we received a total of $ The total cost to reupholstering the 35 chairs was only approximately $ , Rick and Rina hand delivered the check to the Sister of Carondelet last Wednesday. What are we to do with the extra $700.00? I am seeking permission from all benefactors who gave money for the reupholstering to allow me to give the balance to the Sisters of the Society of the Sacred Heart. The Sisters residence on Rimpau & 9th Street needs some repairs in their house. If you have any objections to this change, please call or me directly (frtruc@cathedralchapel.org). Forsake foolishness that you may live; advance in the way of understanding (Prov. 9) WEEK OF AUG 23-29, 2015 SAINTS, SPECIAL OBSERVANCES, MASS INTENTIONS AND PARISH EVENTS SUNDAY, August 23: 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time 8:00 + Manuel Agner 10:00 For All Our Parishioners 12:00p +Manny Bernal 1:00p *Confession MONDAY, August 24: St. Bartholomew 9:00 +Pepita Balayo Aguas TUESDAY, August 25: Sts. Romero 3:00p PARISH SUMMER PICNIC 5:00p Thanksgiving Mass from Rudy and Dolly Tidalgo Last week I began my homily by saying: Why am I such a fool? Why are you such a fool? As human beings we do foolish things or make mistakes that is so out of the ordinary. We hope that as we age or mature in life we would do less foolish acts. We all want to know and meet people who are filled with wisdom. May be our life would have been so different if we had met such person. Our life would be so different. There are two ways we gain our wisdom in life: (1) Education opens our mind to learn or to explore places or knowledge. (2) Experience allows us to make mistakes and tries them again. All three scriptural readings suggest the thought that we need to forsake our foolishness and seek the way of understanding. St. Paul in Ephesians reminds us to do the following three ways: a) Making the most of the opportunity, b) Do not continue in ignorance, and c) Try to understand what is the will of the Lord (Eph. 5). Faith seeking understanding (St. Anselm). As Jesus explains in John s Gospel, whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him (Jn. 6). Many of Jesus listeners including the disciples were having a difficult time accepting Jesus teaching. The way to gaining wisdom in life and faith requires this constant openness to seek and understand what is God s Will in our life. Be informed, be interested, and be involved in our Catholic faith. We are happy to see you and participate in the Mass. God deserves an hour from you each week. However, please make an effort and show respect by arriving to Mass on time. Arriving on time reveals much about the importance we place on God and worshipping him. God bless. PARISH ADMINISTRATION Rev. Truc Q. 3 WORSHIP, LITURGY & FAITH In preparation for the Papal visit to Philadelphia, we share with you 14 Faith Facts that you may not know about Blessed Junípero Serra. Blessed Junipero Serra is scheduled to be canonized on September 23, 2015 at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington D.C. He will become the first saint to be canonized on U.S. soil, and the first Hispanic saint in America. LOVE IS OUR MISSION: The Family Fully Alive. September 22-25, 2015, Philadelphia 14 FAITH FACTS ABOUT BLESSED JUNÍPERO SERRA 14 Datos de fe sobre el Beato Junípero Serra 10. In his final hours at Mission San Carlos Borromeo, Junípero Serra said he did not deserve eternal happiness. He went on to say that if he received this grace that he would pray for the conversion of the rest of the Native Americans of California. On the afternoon of August 28, 1784, after not sleeping for thirty hours, he fell asleep on two boards, holding to his chest the large cross with remembrances from Mallorca and our Blessed Mother when he journeyed to heaven. 10. 11. While Father Serra s body lay in state at Mission San Carlos, mourners adorned his body with a blanket of flowers. The mourners included candle-holding soldiers from the presidio and crew of the San Carlos, Spanish craftsmen, artisans, laborers, and six hundred Native Americans. The singing of the Responsorio was almost drowned out by the tears and sobs and wailing of those present, according to Father Francisco Palou, Serra s friend and first biographer. 11. To learn more about Fr. Junípero Serra, including his travels, legacy and news stories, visit Since its inception by Saint John Paul II in 1994, the World Meeting Of Families has strengthened the sacred bonds of families across the globe. Each World Meeting of Families has a theme that energizes and enlivens the event while adding great depth of meaning to our understanding of families. The theme of the World Meeting of Families Philadelphia 2015 is Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive, emphasizing the impact of the love and life of families on our society.
