4 Faith Formation for Holy Family will be starting up this fall. This will be for children in grades K-12. If you would like to have your child or grandchild included, please call the parish office at Faith Formation for St. Anthony Grades 1-3: Classes will be held every Sunday Morning from 9:30 to 10:30. 5 The Pastor's Corner This week, I continue my reflections on the topic of Respect Life Month. In this week's column, I will focus on the tragedy of suicide. It goes without saying that every suicide is tragic. Even among terminally ill patients, a request to die is almost always a cry for help. The request to die is a signal that something in the person's condition-medical, emotional, or psychological-is not being adequately attended to. Studies show that this desire for death in terminally ill individuals generally correlates with both physical pain and poor social support. When adequate care or relief is offered for depression, better pain management, or more comprehensive palliative care, the desire for death typically vanishes. Suicidal individuals-with or without a terminal illness-typically don't really want to die. Rather, they want to escape what they perceive to be an intolerable situation, and they believe that suicide is the only way out. Among terminally ill patients, a request to die is often associated with a potentially treatable mental disorder, such as depression or anxiety. Yet, in Oregon, where assisted suicide has been legal since 1997, fewer then 5 % of individuals who die by assisted suicide are ever referred for psychiatric evaluation to rule out the most common causes of suicidal thinking-and the percentage of those such an evaluation is steadily decreasing. Doctor-assisted suicide enables and escalates suicide. It enables suicide in that it increases access to a ready means to end one's life, especially for those who are vulnerable due to a terminal illness. Additionally, there is indeed a "social contagion" aspect of assisted suicide that cannot be ignored. Studies have shown that the permissive assisted suicide laws in Oregon and Washington have caused at least a 6% rise in the overall suicide rates in those states. After declining suicide rates in the 1990's Oregon experienced a dramatic increase in the suicide rate between 2000 and By 2012, suicide rates in Oregon were 42% higher than the national average. Doctor-assisted suicide sends that message that some lives are not worth living. Unfortunately, this false will be heard not only by those with a terminal illness, but by every person struggling with the desire to his or her life.
