Sunday by Sunday Nativity of John the Baptist THE GIFT OF A CHILD A sign goes up on the neighbor s lawn: Welcome Home Our New Baby Boy. Bright balloons speak to the celebration. The neighborhood comes alive. One organizes a week of dinners for the mother and her family. Another collects for a month s supply of diapers. The new parents respond by announcing the baby s name and extending an invitation to the baby s baptism with a party to follow. Isn t it a positive sign that in a society that has legalized the killing of the unborn, a community will still joyfully unite to celebrate the birth of a child? THE COMMUNITY REJOICES The situation surrounding the birth of John the Baptist was not all that different from the one described above. Elizabeth and Zechariah s neighbors knew about the unusual circumstances of Elizabeth s pregnancy (she was older and had been unable to conceive) and joyfully greeted the baby s birth. The new baby was firmly rooted in his religious community. His parents observed the law of the covenant given to Abraham when they had him circumcised on the eighth day. They shared with everyone their son s special name, John, and Zechariah, who had been mute, immediately began to speak. The people were amazed and recognized that the Lord s hand was on this special baby. The neighbors were also fearful, knowing that the life of God s chosen is often difficult. We could ask about any infant, What will this child be? and imagine a world of possibilities. At the same time, we know that the gift of faith received in baptism and nurtured in families, neighborhoods, and parishes guarantees the greatest success of all an eternal place in the reign of God. Prayer of the Week Prayer to St. John the Baptist O God, You raised up St. John the Baptist to prepare a perfect person for Christ. We call upon St. John s intercessions to properly prepare us with a true sense of repentance to receive Your grace and salvation. Make us faithful to truth and justice, as You did Your servant, John the Baptist, herald of Your Son s birth and death. Lord, may You increase Your life within us. Amen. 4 In Our Parish and Diocese Lifelong Faith Formation ELEMENTARY FAITH FORMATION Classes are held at the Faith Formation Center attached to St. John Catholic School, September-May. Totus Tuus - Totally Yours August 5-10 Corpus Christi Faith Formation Center Grades 1-8 Grades 9-12 Mon. - Fri. Sun. - Thurs. 9:00AM - 3:00PM 7:00-9:00PM Totus Tuus is a Catholic youth program for students from 1st through 12th grade dedicated to teaching the Gospel and deepening love for the Church through catechesis, prayer, Christian witness, and the sacraments. The program s strong emphasis on devotion and love for Christ in the Eucharist and for Mary, Mother of the Church, leads participants to an exhilarating encounter with the timeless treasures of the Catholic Faith. MISSION - The mission of Totus Tuus is to inspire in young people a true longing for holiness, a deep desire for daily conversion, and an openness to their vocation by challenging them to give themselves entirely to Christ through Mary and by strengthening their prayer lives in imitation of her. FAITH FILLED LEADERS - Totus Tuus draws upon the energy and dedication of Catholic college students and seminarians from Maine to witness to our faith. The team dedicates two weeks to intensive training and prayer at the beginning of the summer before travelling throughout the diocese to lead Totus Tuus at six different parish locations. REGISTRATION - Cost: $50 per student/maximum of $100 per family. Resisting Happiness by Matthew Kelly What is one of the biggest challenges we face as Christians? These four, simple words: "Your will be done". How often have we chosen the path of least resistance? Procession of the Bread and Wine During Mass We welcome family members of the person for whom the Mass is intended to process with the bread and wine during the Offertory. If you would like to take part in this ministry when a Mass is being offered for your loved one please inform the collectors before Mass begins so that role can be reserved for you.
