1 Granville Catholic Church Record Vol. 1. No. 27. November 20, 2016 Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe The Official Bulletin of Holy Trinity Parish at Granville and Holy Family Parish at East Granville Happy Anniversary HOLY FAMILY PARISH To d a y w e c e l e b r a t e t h e 70 th anniversary of the foundation of Holy Family Parish at East Granville. The parish owes its beginnings to Fr. John Haplin, of the mother parish of Holy Trinity at Granville, who was responsible for gathering the faithful in the Trongate section of Granville Parish. The Mass Centre at G.E.P.A. Hall, the Trongate was purchased in January 1937 for 300. In February 1938 the St. Joseph s Convent School opened in the hall with the Sisters of St. Joseph in charge, coming from Granville each day. H o l y F a m i l y Pa r i s h w a s established in November 1946 with Fr. John Kerrigan as first Parish Priest and Les Campion, later to be Parish Priest of Holy Trinity Parish at Granville, as an altar boy. On Sunday, January 27 th, 1952 Cardinal Gilroy blessed and laid the foundation stone of the new school and later, the foundation stone of Holy Family Church. A new convent was built in 1970 and in 1972, Cardinal Freeman blessed and laid the foundation stone of the hall. Ten years later he opened a new presbytery. It is the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph that give to us that ideal of communion. Bound together as a family they lifted one another and gave to each other the support to grow. The family is a participation in the life of God because it is a reminder that God s love is so great that rather than holding it within Himself God chose to see the outpouring of that love in the creation of humanity as His children and the union of all men and woman with Him our Heavenly Father. A s w e c e l e b r a t e t h e 7 0 th anniversary of the foundation of this parish of East Granville we remember those who came before us to serve almighty God and to honour Him and make Him known, and we, in turn seek to carry on their work to the glory of God and the salvation of His people. So let us pray, that by the grace of Our Lord and the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph, we will be bound together in communion and by our participation in the life of the Church we will bind ourselves to our Lord and come to know the fulness of our humanity and our eternal salvation.

6 Saints & STUFF The Holy Family CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH The Parish CATHOLIC Trivia HOLY FAMILY P A R I S H The Holy Family is the family of Our Lord, Jesus, His mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and His earthly father, St. Joseph. Veneration of the Holy Family was formally begun in the 17 th century by Saint François de Laval, the first Bishop of New France (North America). The Feast of the Holy Family was instituted by Pope Leo XIII in 1893 and is celebrated on the Sunday within the Octave of Christmas; that is, the Sunday between Christmas Day and New Year s Day, or, if there is no Sunday in the octave, on December 30 th. The feast not only honours the Holy Family but offers the family of Our Lord as the model for all Christian families A parish is a definite community of the Christian faithful established on a stable basis within a particular church; the pastoral care of the parish is entrusted to a pastor as its own shepherd under the authority of the diocesan bishop (Code of Canon Law, n ). It is the place where all the faithful can be gathered together for the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist. The parish initiates the Christian people into the ordinary expression of the liturgical life: it gathers them together in this celebration; it teaches Christ's saving doctrine; it practices the charity of the Lord in good works and brotherly love. You cannot pray at home as at church, where there is a great multitude, where exclamations are cried out to God as from one great heart, and where there is something more: the union of minds, the accord of souls, the bond of charity, the prayers of the priests (St. John Chrysostom, De incomprehensibili 3, 6). Established in 1946 There have been FOUR Parish Priests in its history 1 st Parish Priest Father John Kerrigan Longest Serving Parish Priest Father James Stack 28A South Street, Granville (02)

8 Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe The Readings First Reading The Second Book of Samuel (5:1-3) All the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron. Look they said we are your own flesh and blood. In days past when Saul was our king, it was you who led Israel in all their exploits; and the Lord said to you, You are the man who shall be shepherd of my people Israel, you shall be the leader of Israel. So all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and King David made a pact with them at Hebron in the presence of the Lord, and they anointed David king of Israel. Responsorial Psalm (Ps 121:1-5.. see v. 2). Let us go rejoicing to the house of the Lord. I rejoiced when I heard them say: Let us go to God s house. And now our feet are standing within your gates, O Jerusalem.. Jerusalem is built as a city strongly compact. It is there that the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord.. For Israel s law it is, there to praise the Lord s name. There were set the thrones of judgement of the house of David.. Second Reading The Letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians (1:12-20) We give thanks to the Father who has made it possible for you to join the saints and with them to inherit the light. Because that is what he has done: he has taken us out of the power of darkness and created a place for us in the kingdom of the Son that he loves, and in him, we gain our freedom, the forgiveness of our sins. He is the image of the unseen God and the first-born of all creation, for in him were created all things in heaven and on earth: everything visible and everything invisible, Mass Matters Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe With this solemnity the Church s year draws to a close and with the first Sunday of Advent a new liturgical year begins. This feast celebrates the fulfilment of our salvation and all that was promised by God Thrones, Dominations, Sovereignties, Powers all things were created through him and for him. Before anything was created, he existed, and he holds all things in unity. Now the Church is his body, he is its head. As he is the Beginning, he was first to be born from the dead, so that he should be first in every way; because God wanted all perfection to be found in him and all things to be reconciled through him and for him, everything in heaven and everything on earth, when he made peace by his death on the cross. Gospel Acclamation Alleluia, alleluia! Blessed is he who inherits the kingdom of David our Father; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Alleluia! Gospel The Gospel of Luke (21:5-19) The people stayed there before the cross watching Jesus. As for the leaders, they jeered at him. He saved others, they said, let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One. The soldiers mocked him too, and when they approached to offer him vinegar they said, If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself. Above him there was an inscription: This is the King of the Jews. One of the criminals hanging there abused him. Are you not the Christ? he said. Save yourself and us as well. But the other spoke up and rebuked him. Have you no fear of God at all? he said. You got the same sentence as he did, but in our case we deserved it: we are paying for what we did. But this man has done nothing wrong. Jesus, he said, remember me when you come into your kingdom. Indeed, I promise you, he replied, today you will be with me in paradise. throughout the ages that He will draw all things to Himself. The King of the Universe, born in a lowly stable in Bethlehem, an outpost of the Roman Empire, now reigns supreme from His heavenly throne as Lord and Master of all that was, that is, and that will be. The empires of this world pass away but his reign will never end.
